Me when playing Byzantine.

Are those Byzantine units in the screenshot? Maybe that’s a greek fire thing? Or is the purple a coincidence?

They are, they also have the same purple color that they always use when they show them.

I hope that the 4 variants of civilizations are playable in multiplayer, although I assume they are only in the story.

The 4 variants civilizations are quite apealing.
Maybe will get like mameluks as an abbassid variant (there is some new arab looking horse archers in the trailer).

etc

There will be only Byzantines and Japanese as full new civs in so-called “Sultan’s Ascend” expansion.

“Variant civs” sounds like a way to save dev working hours $$$.

Wouldn’t it be A WHOLE LOT BETTER AND EASIER to just relocate development from US/Canada to a country with competitive dev salaries like India?

Byzantine flamethrower rams look cool though.

The Mamluk Sultanate, the extremely powerful and advanced civ which utterly destroyed French, English, Mongols and HRE at the key moment of “Sultan’s Ascend” and was far stronger than Japan, will not be included in “Sultan’s Ascend” as a full civ.

The eternal Persians, the world’s oldest and first Superpower and mega empire which basically created the idea of modern civilization with civil rights, human rights and religious and cultural freedoms and remained a major World Power for all periods of history: Achaemenid Iran in antiquity, Parthian Iran in Roman times, Sassanid Iran in early Byzantine times, Samanid Iran, Buyid Iran and Timurid Turco-Iranian state in medieval times and the major World Power of Safavid Iran as main rival of Ottomans and Rus at the decisive moment of late AoE4… was not included

There will be 10 new maps and 2 new biomes.

This raises the hopes some of the extraordinary map historical elements and biomes discussed in the map & biomes ideas will be included.

The megaregion of Anatolia + Holy Land + Middle East + Egypt + Iran is BY FAR the most ancient and historical part of planet Earth, and it’s unthinkable and unimaginable to waste all that. That’s my main hope for this expansion.

Perhaps the variant civs have to do with the crusader units we seen on screenshots. Maybe crusader states or a new landmark, which lets you built crusader knights.
There is only 1 campaign, which may seem a bit disappointing, of course, depends how long it will be. Hoping down the line later for a Byzantine campaign as well…

Beasty confirmed 6 new multiplayer civs. In one of the screenshots, you see a muslim horse archer, which would then be an Ottoman or Abbasid variant of some kind.

What variant civ mean that should further explain

From my understanding is that they took 4 old civs and made them newer and added new units, heroes and strategies so they are like newer versions of those civs.

According to Beasty it’s like 6 new civs.

They are variants of civilizations already existing, but with different technological units and I think also Landmark, I think that the only things they have in common with normal civilizations, are the main constructions, for the rest they will all have new things, I think.

We’re also adding re-imagined variants of four existing civilizations, with exciting new heroes, units, and strategies. The Abbasid Dynasty, Chinese, French and Holy Roman Empire will receive these new Variant Civilizations and players will have new ways to play as seasoned favorite civilizations.

This is from the xbox news page. Since there’s a new Abbasid civ confirmed and this is around the crusades, it is almost confirmed this will be a Mamluk reimagining of the civ.
