A Deep Dive into the New Tupi Civilization

If that’s the case, then these civs don’t really have a Militia-line substitute. Instead, we’ve only gotten an Eagle-line replacement with more upgrades. I think the balance could be pretty wild.

do you think a shock infantry with bonus against shock infantry would work? then they would still counter eagles, fire lancers etc, ie filling militia line’s main role.

They don’t. Aztecs and Maya are going to damn hell. 11

I think that the Tupi wonder could have been a HUGE “maloca” which were the communal housing and storage buildings of the Tupi and arious other lowland South American Native groups. Some of this “maloca” buildings were reported to be even 100 metres long and were able to house hundreds of people under a single roof. Of course, they had no stone and were only made of wood and other vegetal materials, but a 100 by 50 metre building that houses an entire community is still very impressive and would have been much more appropriate than a natural wonder.

I found this about the Tupi malocas on an article titled “Tupinambá Chiefdoms?” writen by William Sturtevant on the book Chiefdoms and Chieftaincy in the Americas:

Also, the devs were aware of such buildings, since the Feudal Era in-game model for the settlement building is obviously based on the maloca buildings of various lowland South American Native groups:

The Tupi Wonder could be based on Iguazu Falls, a famous set of large waterfalls on the Argentina-Brazil border, and considered to be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World:

    • This would make it the first Wonder in the game explicitly based on a natural landmark instead of a building.

    • The structure on top might be an oca or maloca (I think is more the second).

Yes, yes. I know. I wrote all that myself.

I assume that means that they will be generally worse in melee, maybe having less melee armour, and therefor probably also being worse against other Infantry but not as bad as Eagle Warriors are.

That opens the question, how do those civs counter Monks?

Easy, Slinger, Jaguar Warrior and Plumed Archer all have bonus damage vs. Infantry.

you can make champi starting in dark age. all of these units are only available starting in castle age.

Question: should I be spelling it Tupi or Tupí? I have seen both spellings online. I guess Tupi is more common in English but Tupí is used in Spanish?

I think either is fine. In English it’s usually spelled Tupi, same in Portuguese. Only spanish uses Tupí. Considering I don’t have í on my keyboard I’ll stick with Tupi.

You can hold Alt Gr to get í on a keyboard, but following the Portuguese seems sensible since they’re native to Brazil. (Also tupí is a type of cheese.) Thanks!

Against cavalry Eagle is better than LS in castle age due to bonus attack and lower food cost.

I assume they will be pretty weak in Dark and Feudal Age.

I know, but I they stated that they are weaker then the Milita Line against cavalry, so they need to be worse then the Milita Line in melee in some way because more speed surely helps against cavalry so they need to be worse in another way.

And I wrote this bit:

I’m assuming they will have 1 less attack and/or 1 less MA compared to LS.

Ah, good info then… When I don’t know something about a civilization, I look it up on Wikipedia or the Age of Empires wiki…

-1 attack -1 MA but +2 PA (since they don’t seem to have Gambesones) and +0.2 speed sounds balanced.

They have to be as fast as an eagle IMO, for scout puporses.

With lower Line of Sight maybe, to push them towards their ability of building outposts.
