Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Getting Return of Rome DLC

I don’t even know who you are.

What?

I don’t care about this argument. You’re trying to defend your “size matters” argument with a completely unrelated one.

Okay but why should I care and how is that related to your argument?

First, there’s only one human race. You can speak of phenotypes or race as a social construct that people perceive.

Second, talking about Poles, Russians and Serbians in medieval times when nation-states were in the making is blurry, as their frontiers and population movement.

DNA test in the actual time would work if most of the population were analyzed.

I didn’t mention any specific nationality but okay.

What’s the difference?

Isn’t that just ethnicity?

Then why do you jump to my post that was a comment to another one, that was direclty talking about that?

The race concept (from Race - Ethnicity, Discrimination, Inequality | Britannica):

" Although most people continue to think of races as physically distinct populations, scientific advances in the 20th century demonstrated that human physical variations do not fit a “racial” model. Instead, human physical variations tend to overlap. There are no genes that can identify distinct groups that accord with the conventional race categories. In fact, DNA analyses have proved that all humans have much more in common, genetically, than they have differences. The genetic difference between any two humans is less than 1 percent. Moreover, geographically widely separated populations vary from one another in only about 6 to 8 percent of their genes. Because of the overlapping of traits that bear no relationship to one another (such as skin colour and hair texture) and the inability of scientists to cluster peoples into discrete racial packages, modern researchers have concluded that the concept of race has no biological validity."

Isn’t that just ethnicity?

Yes. Because races doesn’t exist it’s better to drop off this word to avoid the biological argument. Ethnicity should be able to be seen a more flexible concept, although cultural racism also exist so people can still fall in some kind of determinism. Things are more complex.

Regarding the game, for me it’s okey to have more groups to break the big umbrella factions. It’s just a game, it’s a simplification, and it’s okey to do that, but don’t use DNA arguments for that.

Is there any source from someone who actually sees the term “race”? The “racial model” described in the link sounds nothing like how I see people people using the word in real life, but tbf none of these situations was in an academic context, so this text feels really uncanny to me.

Not a good reason. It’s like saying Darwinism shouldn’t be taught because it leads to racial supremacism arguments.

I tried looking this term up but I simply couldn’t understand it. How is it racism if it’s prejudice against other cultures?

The Kingdom of Georgia LITERALLY prevented Islam from entering Europe nearly singlehandedly at the Battle of Didgori. It had help from the Franks, the Alans, and the Kipchaks, but it was able to hold its own against the Turks plenty of times. There are three civilizations right there that the Georgians interacted with: the Franks, Turks, and Cumans, two of which were introduced in 1999. Georgia was also invaded and ultimately conquered by the Mongols.

If we’re going to have the Georgians, we also need the Armenians, who were to the south and were significantly less protected against the Turks, but they did have a kingdom of their own with a fairly strong military at some point.

I am searching all the web without any luck. Where did you found the speculation/information that Western Roman Empire will be added to Aoe2 DE? Do you have any link we can see?

If this is true, very important information because it looks like that alongside the aoe 1 game mode we might get together more Aoe2 content, like new campaigns and even a new civ with this DLC.

So far it’s gossip (does a pun like “Gothip” work here?)

I’m a bit conflicted about WRE or who knows whatever it is for official AOE2 Medieval civs. You have to remember Goths still lived all the way until Charlemagne and still at one form or another in England/Spain/North Africa. WRE died out long before than Goths but Goths managed to see Early Middle Ages.
I somewhat wanted AOE1 civs getting AOE2 treatment aka doing similar to what Rome Ad Bellum did. Seems like they are re-releasing AOE1DE again with what AOE1DE should’ve actually received at first place. Why not just straight up update AOE1 steam page game to AOE2? DLC looks like somewhat of scam.

You’re whining because some other guy is getting attention that you feel you deserve.
I like to design civs too. If I really wanted to, I would try to get FE to hire me to make them a reality. I don’t whine about my lack of exposure online.

Now that I think about it, I certainly wouldn’t mind a total rework for Byzantines then renaming them as Romans.

Renaming them, I would agree. Rework them, I don’t see the point.

Cheaper trash reflect their theme system, bonuses on fire ships are also based on their naval supper weapon. Cheaper Imp advance is also fitting. The monk bonus reflects in a way their religious focus. Also the Cataphract represents their elite shock cavalry.

The defensive focus, also. They were under invasion almost constantly, some times on multiple fronts, and they did survive for more than a millennia.

All in all, I don’t think the game could have done a better job in representing them.

When I say rework, I mean changing their units, building architecture, or adding some new ones using already available assets, so I also agree not to touch the civs personality. After all we already have Legionary and Centurions in the scenario editor. Also, from the leak itself, it seems that they really do use them too.

Sorry for the message in spanish.

Chicos, dos cosas.
Primero, eviten las faltas de respeto
Segundo, eviten las filtraciones (aunque ustedes no sean los culpables), denuncien los links y a las filtraciones por privado con el equipo de MS por favor.

People forget that are still in NDA, but I understand, somehow we see many dumb theories… making it impossible to keep shut

Ps:I’m feeling this topic will get a lot of traction until the release… probably like it was for “Any hints for the dlc called Porto?”

I think this old video from 2015 could give us an idea of how the Romans might play in AoE2.

I doubt our Roman civ will be like that considering their UU seems to be the dark ages centurion.

Either way back in HD I really liked that Roman civ design honestly

Edit: Nevermind, I got it confused by another better Roman civ design from HD

Wow someone predicted Dravidians stable tech tree back in 2015!

A lot better than Dravidians though. They have knight and 20% faster farmer.
