Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Getting Return of Rome DLC

I hope for brand new launcher for all AoE games where AoE 1 Return of Rome is separately game but included in AoE 2 files (you download AoE 2 with RoR DLC and you launch AoE 2 on Steam but RoR and AoE 2 is separate games in launcher).

AoE Return of Rome can get a “ancient” civs from AoE 2 like: American civs, Celts, Norse (Vikings), Goths, Huns, Slavs, Ethiopians, etc.

I don’t understand why people think that you will be able to fight AoE I against AoE II civs.

It’s pretty clear: a port of AoE I to AoE II engine. That means money to FE and a game with a supported engine, better pathfinding, MP, scenario editor and triggers…

That is the thing that they should had done since the beggining. But the purist and nostalgia players were too loud, sometimes against autofarm because it “makes the game dumb”

Look forward to see the reaction of the auto everything clown when the console version goes out.

What about 3 new civs to complete the campaigns scenarios for Atila and Alaric with the Romans, for the Egyptians maybe something related to Yodith scenarios, and for the Babylonians something related to the ancient Persians in the mesopotamian region
Overall the cover looks amazing
I can’t wait for this particular DLC that shows how the devs are trying to avoid any particular DLC region subject, instead they moved to a DLC era
I like it

All of the aoe civis.

I mean, we do have the Celts and the Britons in one game, but I guess even that is a bit of a stretch since Britons and Celts are no longer 100% the same people.

You forgot sicilians aka normans so we have England Wales and Scotland in a way.

The decision was very easy for them to make.
"Will we make more money by recreating AOE1, with a small, highly Vietnamese fanbase, in the engine of AOE2? Or will we make more money by selling this as a DLC to our very large and dedicated fanbase of AOE2?

Probably did not take long for them to answer that and decide.

Edit: I mean nothing denigrating with the “highly Vietnamese” comment. Its just one of those trivia things that I find quite amusing so I drop it wherever I can. I have nothing agaisnt them as a people and hope they’re enjoying the game.

The Vietnamese fanbase plays RoR 1.0 though and not AoE1DE.

I wonder if they will migrate to the new AoE1.5DE

You know something funky has just gone down when you’ve been out for a few days, and when you get back, there are 10 threads about Rome on the AoE2 forum. :face_with_peeking_eye:

Gotta say though, this looks like a massive bait-and-switch for people who were wanting more AoE2 content…as opposed to AoE1 with more capabilities awkwardly shoehorned into being part of AoE2 somehow. Don’t get me wrong, I think the concept of AoE1 with expanded QoL features and functions (gates, trade, maybe UUs or UTs, increased Editor functionality) is very cool, but framing it as an AoE2 DLC is peculiar at best. And it raises the question of whether the end product will have too little of AoE2 (AoE DE Glorified Reboot), or too much.

I guess it makes some sense in the context of the 25th anniversary shindig, but hopefully we get some more actual AoE2 stuff in the very near future. At very least it would be cool to have a few more AoE1 units/objects/eye candy in the AoE2 Editor.

everything you say. exactly my thoughts

The very good part of this engine port of Aoe1 is that you can use triggers freely, if we can mess a little with scenario editor. Hope this is possible.

Great Idea, Hopefully they launch it very soon, cant wait.

I was confused at the moment I saw the image, adding AoE1 antiquity civs into AoE2’s civ roster is something I’ve never wanted to be done…BUT! It says it’s a client “DLC” so we can calm down a bit and wait for further info rather then go into wild speculations of having civs like Persians, Japanese, Byzantines, Koreans, Chinese and Berbers twice

I CANNOT WAIT to see the first screenshots/video’s of AOE1 in the AOE2:DE engine.

Cannot wait. Unfortunately I think I’ll have to, I suspect it will be a long time before we see this.

This was the newly and misterious thing according to roadmap, then “ancient Friends” means they are releasing this at the first 6 months of 2023, and then another DLC with true AoE 2 content, so this DLC can be an split of an actual civ, that would explain “You like Dynasties of India? We are taking notes” means that they can release it on Christmas or soon 2024

We already have Romans on AoE2. Classic Egyptians weren’t a thing during Yodit time.
Babylonian campaign would only make sense if they mix civs, but I hope they don’t
