Age of Wars

I dream of an Age of Empires from the Victorian era to the Cold War. Since AoE 4 turned out to be a throwback to the Middle Ages, it means the need to create a new sub-series - Age of Wars (working name, but probably fits perfectly with a series of games set in the 20th century).

  • Age of Wars 1 - Victorian Era and WW1
  • Age of Wars 2 - Interwar period and WW2
  • Age of Wars 3 - Cold War and the Yugoslav War

This thread is open for people to suggest ideas so we can craft a game concept together. Hopefully if we get enough people to join in MS might think of making a game (or games) focused on these time periods.

I think this a good idea. I would really like to an age of empires set in the mid 1800s to like WW 1 maybe WW 2. The only reason I might not go father into the Cold War era is I feel balancing air planes could be difficult

i feel WW2 is too milked already

Here are a few faction ideas:

Poland

Belgium

Britain

France

Germany

United States

Russia

Japan

China

Italy

Serbia/ Yugoslavia

These are probably the most important ones and from there that could be in the base game, this would be a total of 11 factions, there is always room for more down the line but I feel these are the most important, other ideas could be

Brazil

Australia

Bulgaria

Romania

Canada? Maybe

Ottoman Empire, although they didn’t last the whole timeframe so maybe not this one.

This also assumes the faction list will be shared by all the games

That’s true, but this game wouldn’t just be ww2, it would go from ww1 to the Cold War, personally I feel like there aren’t lots of ww1 games out there other than The Victoria series and the majority of the timeframe in that game isn’t based on ww1

I think a game about modern day conflicts ranging from 1800 to 2021 would be epic

Not as an RTS. Only game that is close to an RTS focused on WW2 I can think of off the top of my head is CoH and that isn’t even a traditional RTS

You mean you don’t want Jets zooming around in the sky? haha

I think the factions will change probably. Some nations were around during Victorian times (I.e. Prussia) but then weren’t around afterwords. I also think it would be cool if you could customize the civ you are playing midgame. Different technologies and “decisions” shape and mold your civ. This would allow for more umbrella civs but each have unique parts to them

This would technically be a bunch of civs, probably more than AoE2 but the civs are grouped into one faction or nation. The more you progress through the game, the more unique your civ gets. You craft and mold your civ based on the technologies you research. (I.e. Prussia can form into Germany in WW1, or you can change history and keep Prussia)
AoW 1 civ list
Victorian Era-WW1

United Kingdom-United Kingdom
France-France
Prussia-Germany
Russia-Russia
Austria-Germany/Austria-Hungary
United States of America-USA
Ottoman Empire-Ottoman Empire
Spain-Spain
Belgium-Belgium
Brazil-Brazil
Denmark-Denmark
Mexico-Mexico/USA
Netherlands-Netherlands
Portugal-Portugal
Italian States-Italy
Sweden-Sweden/Norway

And of course expansions can add more factions and more routes for civs to go

Maybe air unit aren’t actually on the map. They are “offmap”
You buy your planes (and helicopters for the third game) and then assign them to an air region. That way they aren’t actually on the map but they are in the game

nice concept, i tend to like games without guns since all units start to look the same, and i hope aoe1 era is explored more, but your concept looks like it would sell good (dont take my word for it). Honestly, i kinda wished aoe3 went to ww1, since ww1 imo was really the birth of the modern world, but then there would be waaaaay too many ages to advance to, so i’m kinda glad.

Not really my concept, it was @MUTYLATOR5553 idea. There is a link to a WW2 RTS concept in the first reply of the thread thoguh.

You could make air planes like they did in Star Wars galactic battlegrounds, where they are useful but not over powered and easy to defend against

Forgive me for not writing anything, but I’ve had a lot of exams lately. And now I will be looking for a job for the summer. For now, I will write a bit on this topic.

I’ve been waiting a long time for AoE 4. I dreamed that this game would be about 19th and 20th century. Unfortunately or fortunately, AoE 4 is a throwback to the Middle Ages. This is an obvious sign that this series will no longer touch the next “Ages”. So as I learned what AoE 4 would be, I came to the conclusion that there should be a whole new subset of the Age of Empires (much like the Age of Mythology) - the Age of Wars. It seems to me that this name is adequate to the subject matter.

The Age of Wars sub-series could ideally be created together with the Relic studio. Since the creators of Company of Heroes help with medieval AoE 4, they would find themselves like a fish in water in AoW. The Centuries of Wars would be a fusion of the Age of Empires with the Company of Heroes. You could say it would be AoE, but with CoH tactics and mechanics.

I think that such a sub-series could gain enormous popularity.

I’m just hoping that Microsoft will also remaster the Rise of Nations games. They are underrated games.
