I sure hope these suggestions aren’t serious.
I also assume you’re joking, and if so, I’m here for this joke.
Yes, make all this auto so I can finally focus on what’s important to me: watching the numbers go up and down in the top toolbar while listening to the game soundtrack. I can’t really ‘watch’ those numbers when I’m too busy clicking stuff in the viewport and build menus. Such a hassle! I don’t want it completely auto, but all that you mentioned is exactly what I want
Just, stop crying for some good QoL features. Go play AoK if you find fun in micro every single action of every single unit.
Yes, like I said, go ahead and make the PC version have the same QoL features as if we are playing with an Xbox controller. Just patch up AoE2:HD a bit first so we can go play that instead. (Which would then probably make HD the Definitive Edition, and DE the Console Edition)
Or, you go play Total War if you want a strong focus on military formations and hate micro-ing. AoE has always been about micro-ing. Now you want to uproot that DNA and make it non-micro… in a “Definitive Edition”, at that?
Go make another AoE game called “Age of Consoles” to auto everything in the name of the almighty "QoL"rather than pollute the game that has always been about micro, imo
Pretty sure you mean farm queues, not reseeds? I think auto-reseed button was added more like 2 or 3 years ago.
For most, being able to add farms into a queue was an obvious quick win and much needed, as were some other improvements over the years.
At some point, though, you should probably just let a game be a game. Sure, add more civs, maps, graphics, modes, campaigns, and such. But have restraint with adding auto- everything and hold-your-hand visualizers, and other gameplay mechanics stuff. We’ve had a lot of stuff added over the years, and right around the auto-scout and tower range additions is when I felt enough is enough. (I was okay with auto-scout. Tower ranges not so much.)
Some reached their saturation point with such QoL stuff before me, some will reach it after today. I just know getting all console with a PC game is not what I signed up for when I bought DE at launch. If that happens more and more, I’d want a refund for the slow, multi-year, orchestrated bait and switch
No, “auto” reseed was added on AOK, though you had to “buy” the farm in advance in you mill. IIRC you could queue m,ore farms the more mills you had.
No that was added in The Conquerors with other QoL features as well.
And rename to AOE2 Kid version -6 years.
The auto-reseed button was added in DE, not Conquerors. I thought this is what snarkycarly was referring to because they said “button”:
Definitive Edition:
With that button, you pretty much ‘click it, and forget it’.
However!, I now see the farm icon button is called “Reseed” in Conquerors, just as snarkycarly said. I forgot it was called that… and just got used to me referring to it as “queuing up farms”
- Since you had to pre-purchase (queue) them, as you know, and since it had a max # you could queue, there was some manual maintenance which I appreciated because it separated those who could manage their econ and battles at the same time, and those who couldn’t. So, I’m not currently a fan of auto-reseed button. I prefer Conquerors’ way.
- Adding more and more “auto” and “QoL” things to AoE2 is a harder and harder sell for me as time goes on because the game seems already auto enough for me. It’s already implemented the vast majority of low-hanging fruit QoL improvements, imo… if not all of them.
Conquerors:
Auto-reseeding button was announced by Forgotten Empires for DE four years ago:
But then you’re effectively floating wood in stasis, it’s not being spent on farms, and can’t be used for anything else. Modern auto reseed is far far more helpful I think.
Pretty much. But you accepted it because otherwise you’d have to spend precious time manually reseeding farms. And if you went too long without adding more reseeds, you’d have to spend that precious time manually reseeding anyways. I don’t miss having to do that.
And T90 is on the top comment. 11
You fail to acknowledge that there are a large number of players who are play single players against AI. Auto farm reseed helps in evenly matching the player’s ability with that of AI. AI never has to invest extra wood on farms in queue. While a player has to do it.
Perhaps they should disallow it in multiplayer mode? So that there is more of a challenge for those who are seeking it.
Single Player Mode should have:
- Auto-Reseed Farms
- Auto-Scout
- Queue Techs with Units in buildings
- Auto converting Monks upon attack
- Auto route to Garrison in Buildings (March)
- Auto-Farm Placement (April PUP)
- Auto-Queue Villagers (New Proposed)
- Auto-Trade Route for Trade Units (New Proposed)
While in the Multiplayer Mode:
- Non of the above mentioned QoLs that have been added after DE.
This should satisfy both the player bases, the casual single players who likes a chill game and the competitive multi player who like a torture.
I’m pretty sure the majority of ranked players do not want to lose the QoL features added to AoE2DE so far.
I think the majority of ranked players will also appreciate the new auto farm placement.
Things like Autoqueue are less popular though but many people would love to at least have the option to enable it in custom lobbies or single player.
Just give it as an option, a checkbox in lobby settings so that one can use it if he likes. Why force features upon anybody? I guess implementation wise it would be just an extension of infinite farm queue mechanism.
On a similar ground auto trade route finder should be similar to auto garrison route finder.
So it shouldn’t be too hard to integrate these as new QoL features
The risk of these changes is to see a gradual change in the audience, either because the old ones don’t like the direction the Gameplay is taking, or because they are old and have other things to do. Many AOE2 players are old and Microsoft must seek to satisfy younger people at the risk of distorting the game.
I hate the fact that ranked players try to force changes based on their preferences alone.
I play AI almost five times more than MP because it is just more fun to me and I am sure there are many like me. AI of AoE2 has the best response out of all games in the series. Reason why I stopped playing AoE4 permanently is it’s crappy AI.
I dont understand his comment, though, where he writes: “What if the farms are bad though?”
You assume that “old” players just generally want the game to stay like it is with as little change as possible.
But that’s not the case for anyone. I don’t have numbers on that but I’m pretty sure that a lot of people that have been playing AoE2 for 20 years also like some QoL features.
I played AoE1 since 1999 but I love QoL features. Many people that have played AoE for a long time are now older and don’t have all day to play video games anymore because they have work, family and so on.
So many of those people just want to have a relaxing game after work.
Most competitive players are likely younger. To be actually good in a game you have to invest time and you also need fast reflexes.
So most competitive players in most games are in their 20s. I assume that also applies to AoE2DE.
So I’m not sure if younger/newer players really like QoL features more then older players.
I think he tried to mean “Farm placement is bad”.
