Itâs definitely not Homeworld 2 and DoW since those surely had their own very specialized devs. It also canât be any of Relicâs RTSs and a shooter, because again, no overlap.
I donât doubt Relic can work (and did work) on several things at once, but youâre conveniently ignoring the overlapping nature of CoH and AoE being both RTS and using the same game engine. Relic wasnât going to reassign their best Essence devs to Microsoftâs outsourced project and the results speak for themselves.
Not having enough of developers is killing the game tbh.
Is took almost a year to just have customize hotkeys which was asked since close beta or earlier. Bugs reported since release still in the games and not time to fix it. Some bugs seem easy to fix too, like Rus got +2 range springlad tower with arrow upgradeâŠ
Maybe Relic is not having enough budget on the gameâŠ

This Is the main discussioni iâve tried to have with someone. Iâm sure Relic could work on two games at the same time, with the same Engine but thereâs a big difference:
Dow and CoH were Relicâs games and the best of developer were working on both games because they were their games.
Now, you signed a contract with MS to develop the fourth installment of Aoe while you are developing a new game of CoH After the disaster of Dawn of War 3. It seems pretty credibile that the most talented were working on COH3 and you can see this also for the graphic: the same Essence5 with more effects, realism, details and more. And also biomas seem much Better. The Total War map Will be a fantastic mode. All features that would be very appreciated into AOE4: a real conquest of the medieval Europe. But a lot of money have been spent for documentaries and i donât understand why.
This Is the main problem when you donât have (until the Activision closing) a first party RTS developer.

Not what I said, but sure, they were working on DoW II expansions at the same time they were working on CoH 2. Retribution was a significant undertaking as it was a) standalone and b) dropped GfWL in favour of Steamworks.
(full disclosure, went to a Retribution pre-release event back in the day, where Jeff Lydell presented on a number of things and got community feedback on how itâd likely be received)
They were also working on Space Marine. The end of the THQ years were pretty busy (and itâs a shame that everything ended at that time for a little bit). Byb the time Retribution shipped, they were already spinning up on CoH 2. Overlap with Space Marine as well.
I said the studio have a history of working on multiple titles at once. And I know for a fact long-standing developers worked on Space Marine (despite being an FPS from a traditionally-RTS studio). The same goes for their Homeworld developers and Impossible Creatures (which was the game where they made the engine theyâd use for DoW). The fact that the engines arenât the same donât really matter when theyâre being made in-house. Engine developers are rare. The same ones will have been working on both of these games. Heck, itâs easy to see in parts what Essence took from the IC / DoW engine.
Youâre making assumptions about who did or didnât work on what. I still remember their RelicNews (old fan forum, now mostly gone) forum handles. Many of their accounts predated my own on that site. Some of them came in after, and stuck around for years
Most developers work on a bunch of things in parallel. For the smaller ones (which Relic always used to count as, and probably still does), itâs rare to have projects in the same stage in development (and the same goes for CoH 3 and Age IV, which evidently arenât in parallel because of one being released already whereas CoH 3 was last year only just releasing an alpha slice and demoing things like active pause). Most developers get passed between projects. There are folks who will have worked on Age IV and CoH 3.
And then thereâs Worldâs Edge to consider, vs. any of Relicâs other titles. Age IV is pretty unique for the studio in this respect and likely has unique challenges in terms of project management and cross-team collaboration (the Content Editor stream a few days back which featured Relicâs community manager - despite WE also having their own - and a senior designer from WE).
Like I said, Iâm not judging you for wanting an explanation. Thatâs what people do when explanations arenât forthcoming. I just said donât get too invested in these explanations, because you are at the end of the day just guessing.
This is pretty much out there. The problem with this game is that itâs such a high profile game and they are releasing basic features a year after. They could have just play tested it themselves and could have hired legacy aoe players to give feedback. The game had such a rough start. A bad campaign no body needs a documentary in a game. The visuals are awful. If I didnât know what aoe was and someone showed me scenes from aoe 3 and 4 I would have said aoe3 Is the modern one. Looking at the modder UI the engine itâs on is very sophisticated. The developers and the execs are to blame.
Why do we even have seasons? Whatâs the point of those rewards? This game will be dead by the 3rd season.
back to the quesiton, yes they are. No unit balance, not many maps (when aoe3 was released it already had more maps and they all were UNIQUE with real geographical features else than water pond/ mountain)
no unit balance since players still complain about france/china/siege etc, no unique units, no regular updates, no treaty mode or other modes
naval combat absolutely broken; people hate water maps so they brought this map filter feature.
Anyway, the same things we all have been complaining and discussing about for a few months and its unbelievable they still havent done any deep changes about it. im always do they REALLY read this? because legacy and pro players (the ones who may seem to be enjoying this game) have gave them deep valuable insight and they still are sleeping on it⊠its sooo over, you cant bring all the people back with this tiny season things or small changes, you need something BIG like 10 new maps, 10 new units, 2 or 3 civs (anyway why am i even suggesting things? hahaha they wont even read it )
Cringe case scenario, but considering that MODDING/âUGCâ was all they talked about in their terrible latest stream It doesnât look too goodâŠ

For the past ten years Iâve seen developers (including Relic) criticised for not giving enough tools to the community. Now they are, and . . . theyâre getting criticised for it?
I mean, whew. I never thought Iâd come across the take of âinvesting in mod tools are badâ. Regardless of what you think of the post-release content, the reality is post-release content never lasts forever (in non live-service games / freemium titles / etc). Eventually they have to develop new games, and support them.
With this in mind, mod tools are excellent. And investing in them now, when they have the most budget for post-release content (which is a resource that typically reduces over time), is the second-best time to do so (the first-best is during development, which in all honesty they obviously were doing because we have the tools the developers themselves use).
Honestly. Really bemuses me that of all the things about this game, some folks are finding a way to spin this particular thing into a negative.
No they arenât killing it.
They could be better, but we get patches every month consistently and if you look at what is in them almost everything is directly based on player feedback. So they are clearly listening to feedback. Even Grubby said they listened to feedback better than devs in other games in his last video.
The game probably released too early. Nothing can be done about that now.
It has gotten better with each update though and itâs mostly in a pretty good state. If you look at winrates the civs are pretty balanced over all. People hate towers right now, I guarantee they will do something to fix that, maybe not as quickly as we would like though, hopefully there is something in addition to the known PUP change in this next patch.
Also, unless they are directly lying to our faces (and there is no reason to think that) then they are committed to the long term.
they should because they are too hard to use that only few can handle which it will make the long term life of the game too short because there no enough content at that point.
Thereâs a learning curve. But with all the guides and documentation the devs have provided (nevermind the community as well), people should definitely try if theyâre genuinely interested.
If you simply donât want to invest time into the tools, thatâs entirely your choice. No judgement from me. Plenty of people already are. Tons of mods have been published already.
That said, it really just feels like youâll put down anything the game does regardless of it actually being good or not. What are you waiting on? What do you think the game wonât get, that you think it needs?
yup but calling learning curve is very opptimistic imo. Iâd rather call it the learning cliff as very few content went out of this mod tools atm. I mean real content like forest and nothing and not simple features like extra zoom or hotkeys that the devs should already delivered themeselves.
As I said the game is already in a critic point where waiting is not enough to pacify the mobs who waited like 8 months to get a playable game thta is not bugged or lack features. No need to be surprised.
There are plenty of folks active and making content.
I appreciate the learning curve can be steep, but itâs really as simple as this: does somebody want to use them? If they do, there are tons of resources. Officially-written and produced by the developers. I canât overstate how useful this is.
If somebody doesnât want to, thatâs fine. But thatâs not about a learning curve then, is it? Itâs that the person doesnât want to, period.
There is no reason to try and argue with players that have a mindset like that. They have already made up their mind and they will hate & complain just about everything they do, and always change to the next thing. Itâs never good enough in their eyes.
