Auto-farms?

Hi,

I am intrested in everybodies opinion about automatic farms, so you don’t have to replant them all the time. Good idea? Or will it ruin the original AOE gameplay?

I’m not sure about it myself. But I defenitly think it’s a good desicion to make the farms walk-able.

I think a system like in the first AoE2 where you can reseed a farm by right clicking an exhausted farm would be good. Farm queuing like in the AoE2 expansions would be fine too, but the system of AoE1 was too tedious.

I disagree with this, I think it should stick to the original. If you want auto-farm, please play AOE2. Age of Empires Definitive Edition is a remaster of AOE 1 that doesn’t have auto-farm.

I’m fine with the AoE or AoE2 system, either way. They both work fine for me - sure, AoE is more tedious, but it works.

I’m fine with both Aoe or AoE2 systems. Or a variation thereof. But no infinite farms ala AoE3 or AoM, that took away all the fun base micro - not to mention took away the idea of using wood to gain food

I haven’t said I want auto farms. I only asked everybodies opinion. So please don’t disagree immediatly.

For myself I agree with @RWNorthPole s’ statement. But I am very curious about everyone else’s opinion

“If you want better graphics, go play AOE3. It’s got nice 3D graphics. Part of the charm of the original AOE1 was it’s sprites, and altering the graphics will make it lose some of its charm.”

I understand that AOE is not AOE2, but the game does need to make some changes to be more accessible to a modern audience. They are actively working on this game. They are already altering the gameplay. Pathfinding is being “fixed”. I’m pretty sure they’ve confirmed rally points will be in the game (which will change the game). It wouldn’t surprise me if the population limit is increased as well ( typical random maps and campaign are set at 50 in the old AOE I’ve recently reinstalled, though I’m told this can be increased in multiplayer).

It’s not going to be exactly like you remember AOE. They are making changes, albeit small ones. Having said that, they’ve already confirmed they’re not going to turn it into an AOE2 clone.

As King of the Noobs (read: while I’m a fan of RTS’s, I’m not really that skilled at them), I’m concerned about the barrier of entry to people who are even more noob-y than me. What can the game do to lower that barrier of entry without betraying the essence of the game?

Now, I know the game isn’t going to make changes as big as some of the ones I’ve suggested in the past, but I think adding auto-farms is a nice quality of life change that would lower the barrier of entry into the game.

Let us allow people to put more of a focus on the fun parts of AOE, and remove some of the drudge work.

At the very least, I want them to allow you to right click on depleted farms to task a villager to rebuild, like in AOE2.

“If you want nicer graphics, just go and play AOE3. The old sprites have a bit of charm to them.”

But seriously, the game needs to do some stuff to bring it forward to a modern audience. Things like Attack-move, gather points, and intelligent villagers have already been confirmed to be added into the game. Auto-reseeding farms would also help make the game more accessible to noobs like me.

Have no fear, there will be a “classic mode”, where you can play the original AOE on the modern platform to your heart’s content.

I would like it to be like aoe 2 system, Auto-reseeding farms .

I prefer the AOE2 farms. There are many other interesting things to deal with, and farms shouldn’t be taking too much time and attention. Queue up a few and give those little farmers some autonomy.

Both are fine, i like the tedious system in AoE 1 and RoR for being able to move my farms around, makes my base feel dynamic ^^

Id be ok with the AoE2 farm system where you can Queue up farms to be reseeded. It is far to tedious to attempt to run a campaign across the map and worry about your farms going fallow every 5 minutes

Well, I agree in some terms about don’t modifying AoE gameplay (for example, not adding gates). But particularly about farms, I think there should be an auto-reseeding system like in AoE II. Basically because is a tedious work to do from time to time, and doesn’t feel to me like a ‘‘special’’ gameplay part of AoE. It’s only repeating the same thing again and again.

You will lose a huge fan base if you change the game mechanics too much… Farms should just be manual as it used to be. Don’t forget there are 100k+ Chinese players still playing, and there was a lively community on Voobly til like 5 years ago with very very high level play.

If you have a “modern” mode and a classic mode, I don’t see how that’s bad. Most of the things “wrong” with the original were hardware limitations anyways.

Auto farms are not a necessity, but what would be nice is that villagers are not going to stand in the middle of the exhausted farms so rebuild is easier

I would argue that they already stated they’re adding features to make the game play like the newer games, that make the original game easier and more fun. So auto farms, for me, are something I’d like to see. I’ve seen other games have farms never even show an available food or need resources to replant; you put a worker on it and you indefinitely draw food from it. I’d argue for that system, but if anything, limit the number of farms allowed and have a higher initial resource cost.

I think ROR was perfect but can live with Upatch changes and AOK farms. AOK farms were the only improvement on ROR in my opinion, I preferred everything else in ROR.

I almost cried when I loaded AOK and saw how the art style was inferior to ROR - the gold in particular looked so much better in ROR, in AOK it just looked like stone which someone had thrown up over or poured cheese on.

Yeah I also prefer AOE gold mines.
