I think the farm change is inevitable either way…but I respect the purists who are fighting against it. The team is including both versions, the original and DE, for that very reason, so they can cater to a new audience while giving the original to the purists.
You want auto farms, what’s next? Automatically assigning villagers to cut wood? lol
from another discussion:
I must add that if they add the farm-que system in AoE DE, hunting and fishing should also be improved to be a just-as-good alternative to farming as it is now.
And that is what I liked about the farming in AoE1. Yes, it can be annoying to think about your farms all the time. But it can also be annoying to have to find new fish, berries, deer or elephant all the time. And I think that is the (historical) great difference between AoE1 and AoE2:
Where AoE 1 is still more about hunting and gathering food and resources.
And AoE 2 is more about the feudal system where people were dependent of farming and their lords protection.
So in short: I am not in favor of putting an farm-que system in AoE DE, but putting in a ‘right-click’ on dead farm replenish thing could do the trick.
Adding a farm-que has a lot of ‘ifs’ and ‘butts’(haha :p) to it, or else it will change the essence of the game and makes it more like AoE2 in my opinion.

Actually, they are already adding gather points and intelligent villagers, so I believe that once villagers finish building a storehouse, they will automatically start cutting wood.
Now, one nice way to address the farming issue was already in RoR and it could be expanded upon in AoEED.
In RoR when a farm runs out the farmer goes to a neighboring farm and collects from there. You could have several farmers on one farm. This was really immersive…I would like to see villagers being intelligent and gathering up all the farms in their collective FOV and then an alert that the farms are all exhausted. This sort of happened in RoR, but the path finding and limited AI could be improved now to make replanting farms less irritating.
ALSO, they could balance out the farming mechanics by doubling a farm’s cost and doubling its food output…it’s exactly the same thing with less management.
we know the baseline for AoEDE is RoR plus the community-released patch, so I expect farmers to at least act that intelligently.
@“Andy P” Or mining gold/stone, or hunting, provided what executable is prioritized in the algorithm required in the coding, as each of these resources are tied to said building if i am remembering correctly.

The problem is there aren’t wood or ore specific buildings so they wouldn’t know which resource to gather if you built between a forest and a gold mine for example.
@Raw1812 True, that is why one may be prioritized in coding, Either by importance, distance, or a combination of many factors. I dont know much about coding by that is how it could be implemented.

That is really hard to decide because if you go by distance to the resource you may have a single tree by the gold mine sending everyone to the tree.
If you go by quantity of resource they will go to the forest instead of the goldmine.
If you split everyone up equally you have to regroup them if you wanted something specific.
I am ok with villagers not being automated as long as there is a big flashing IDLE villager pop-up with sirens…like a really invasive anti-virus that won’t leave you alone while you download stuff off LOLtorrentz.virus.net
@Raw1812 LOL yeah, i could see it being similar to AOE 2 HD where its prioritized by both distance and, by the look of it, quantity. every once in a while i have to reassign villagers to what i want. As for the Idle Villager thing i believe it was confirmed in the Dev interview.
I belive that automatic farms will destroy part of the game , i know they can be improved so you can manage them more efficientlly instead of just an autofarm, my idea

Fear not! The original AoE1 is being released without any changes whatsoever!
Yeah with the classic mode, everyone gets what they want. I plan on trying them both.

I disagree with this, I think it should stick to the original. If you want auto-farm, please play AOE2. Age of Empires Definitive Edition is a remaster of AOE 1 that doesn’t have auto-farm.
I completely agree… why make it more like AOE 2? Having to tend to villagers, farms, resources, single ques takes focus and skill it should be rewarded.

To the point that it scares off the noob-y players?
I agree that better players should be rewarded for playing better, but we have to think about people who are coming to this game for the first time. They want to be able to use their focus on the more fun things, like controlling their army.
No one is saying we should get rid of the aspect of AOE that involves managing your economy. What we’re talking about is making it a little easier, allowing the skill-based stuff to be in the more fun parts of the game.
I have the answer to all thoses arguments : https://forums.ageofempires.com/discussion/676/farm-queuing-suggestion-to-make-everybody-happy#latest

Stop with this.
No one wants the old AOE with old graphics.
You’re making an hold up on the new AOE DE that you want in face be an AOE4.
Why don’t you go to a topic for an AOE4, and lets us with the AOE >>>1<<<< DE, remastered ?
I totally forgot : Did you guys read about this as well ?

He means that AoEDE is actually two games because you can play the new version or the original version. The new version will have all new graphics, ui and improvements and the old original will be untouched and both will be fully playable.
