Ok let me say something here as a die hard fan and a decent player: I personally would hate it if farms would just automatically replace itself. But I’m also realistic, AOE 2 is much bigger than AOE 1 and it has auto replacement for farms (granted, you still have the queue them, but ok). If we want a vibrant AOE community again then there have to be some changes to get a lot of new players into the game. If it is just graphical changes than nobody will be interested to play, except for old players.
That being said: here is what I think that should be done: when your farm is done you should be able to select a villager and than right click a farm and it will start rebuilding that farm. That way, rebuilding farm is more convenient, but at least it has not been reduced to clicking the farm queue in the granary.

That’s a good compromise…here is the current way of replanting farms…
‘.’ for the idle villager
then move him away from where he is standing
then ‘b’ to build
‘f’ for farm if I remember correctly
the actual farm placement
Even if your apm is in the 200 range it still takes about 3-4 seconds to leave a battle and replant a single farm…and if we have like a 200 pop cap and have 40 farms going imagine that 3-4 second process but several times every minute.

As a noob I have to say that replacing farms is indeed the most annoying feature in late game, I would also like automatic replacement like in AoK, but if that’s too much for the pros I think @BlazingGaming13s solution would also be great.
In addition I think “farm expired” notification with sound would be neat.
not agree.
_sc2 is a lot more successful than aoe1 and has zerg. so i wabt zergs in aoe1 !
_what u have to do instead of planting farms?
me i want automatic army production. i have better thing to do than producing army.
i want automatic build order. i have better stuff to do than creating an economy.
i want automatic battle i have better thing to do than giving orders in battle…
seriously your arguments make nosense.
aoe is a rts. and rts is not a 4x like civilisation. youre supposed to multitask. prioritize tasks. decide. organize.
increase your apm to do more stuff at tje same time.
by introducing automatic farm you broke all thoses mecanics. you kill the game itself.

we already had pop200 cap in aoe1 you just to launch it with -pop200 option
and farms were no problems
The reason @tgaud is right is because economy management and micro econ units are an important part of Age of Empires.
For example, storehouse placement and replacement and wood line efficiency as well as being on top of idle villagers is a hallmark of AoE. It is so much more econ macro heavy than other RTS games (4 resources, tons of econ units etc). For example, SC2 has two types of resources (3 if you count gold minerals), specific base locations, and only one econ unit per race.
Often, if you were crummy at micro but built a beast eco and were on top of your farms, woodline and resource spending you could overwhelm your opponent. For @tgaud adding auto-farms would be like TCs in AoE2 automatically making villagers and assigning them to tasks…it just isn’t how the game was meant to be played.
However, if auto-farming is not implemented the vast majority (including myself) will request it. So it makes no sense not to include it simply for that reason…it is the wrong thing to do but it is inevitable.

while im agree to have a more simple system with right click to rebuild, im against the autofarm part.
you remove decision, organisation multitasking.
if u do, it will be an age of empire 2 remake and me and a lot of ppl wont buy it.
i want a game where its me playing and improving. not a computer doing it for me.
and moreover we want the same gameplay than the original one.
not an “age of empire 4” full of modernity
I believe that every other Age game has permanent farms. I do not believe that every other age game can be accused of removing decisions, organization, or multitasking.
Permanent farms seem like a very small change that would improve quality of life more than it would sacrifice some kind of essence of the game.
But since there is no way to measure quality of life or the essence of the game, I suppose two reasonable people could have two differing opinions.

Careful Andy, dangerous ideas like that could endanger our entire society!
I guess we can compare it to our grandmas’ apple pie.
It is easier to buy store bought apple pie…in fact, some bakeries make better apple pie than your grandma. But your grandma’s applie pie is still your grandma’s applie pie and AoE1 farms are AoE1 farms.

I think a system like in the first AoE2 where you can reseed a farm by right clicking an exhausted farm would be good. Farm queuing like in the AoE2 expansions would be fine too, but the system of AoE1 was too tedious.
I completely agree with this. I’d say in my opinion:
Right-click replenish option: Dead farms should appear on screen for a long time, and makes it easier to rebuild.
or
Farm queing at the granery: But that depends a bit on the following questions: How much bigger maps (bigger than gigantic) will there be? and more importantly, will there be an higher population capacity in singleplayer games?
Because bigger maps, and especially more units, require more farms, which require more of the (tedious) work in rebuilding farms. In that case I would like to see 2. added, because it will be a lot more work to comprehend everything.
But I think that hunting and fishing should also get some improvements, so it stays a good alternatives.
If that isn’t the case, then 1. could do it for me.
I am not a fan of the infinite farms (as seen in AoM). It feels a bit cheap to me, because there is no cost… only time.
And it could result in a never ending game.
edit: It’s very nice if the farms in the game are walkable!

All new age of empire games were crap…
the more new they are, the less fun they were. despite the graphicals improvments, dont take that in example.

I’m agree with you, as often.
But for me even if there is more pop, its interesting to have more and more stuff to do.
because to everything you have to do and can’t handle, there is a way for improvment.
And if you have 10 action to make at the same time, but not enough APM, well, then you have to make strategic choice.
CHOICE !! its a matter of strategy and we should encourage everything that give more choice as it makes the game more deep, more hard to master with more place for improvment, getting better every game

That’s your opinion. 4,000,000 people have bought AoE2HD (on Steam), 2,000,000 bought AoK, 2,500,000 bought AoE3, 1,000,000 bought AoM, and who knows how many people bought AoE: Gold/Collector’s, or The Conquerors. Personally, I’m in favor of @LegoVogel 's solutions to the issue. Seriously, Tgaud, if you hate all new AoE games, then chances are you’ll hate any changes they make to AoE:DE. Get UPatch and play the original. If even that’s too much, then just go play the original AoE in 1997 with a CRT monitor. Sometimes change can be positive, you know?

You can’t compare the number with the multiplayer community who has grown x1000
And buying is about marketting.
How much have stayed ?
how much are totally crazy about an age of empire3 extension ? Not much.

I don´t get, why every RTS game has to be like that. Why are you supposed to multitask like crazy to have fun? That´s subjective and most people don´t like that. Only some top gamers in multiplayer and maybe most of the south corean people (nothing against south coreans ) But most other people on the world have no problem with some comfort functions like auto farms. Why should be gaming that much stressful and rebuild 30 or 40 farms with a superb number of clicks? Why is button smashing so cool? I don´t get it. AOE 1 is not AOE 2, true. But why is nobody complaining about auto farms there? If no auto farms would make the game so much better, than why is there no one demanding it in the AOE 2 community? Why don´t they know that auto farms are game killers?
BUT: If there is really only right click for reseeding, that would be already at least okay for me and I think, that´s what we get.
Still: Why nobody is complaining in AOE 2 about auto farms? Why do they have so much fun with AOE 2, when auto farms are so bad?
Your Link explain your thoughts and the thoughts of some others, but it´s still subjective, what kind of multitasking is for someone fun and not. And most people don´t share that thoughts and again, why is no one complaining in AOE 2 about the functions?
I just share the opinion that infinite farms are bad, because that changes the economy.
Did you read Tgaud link ?
Because AOE2 had some mechanics to replace the manual farm mechanics.
So in the end you still had plenty stuff to do on your economy.
On Age of empire1 if you replace the farm system, you have nothing timeconsuming, to add to the game to replace the empty space, that doesn’t already exist.

Agreed. Same thing with the gates and various other changes AoE2 had.

Go to age of empire 2 forum then… you seem to like it so much

No, because this is a thread about AoE:DE, and about implementing changes to the farm mechanics. Unless you have something constructive to contribute, I would ask that you don’t clutter the thread with rude remarks like this.
