Celts Split

i dont think we need any split at all outside of the slavs maybe. Africa, Oceania, and Asia including the East, Central, and South regions could certainly handle at least another 2–3 civs each before we go back to europe.

If we’re not getting more sail models (and it looks like we aren’t), we should be given regional ship models instead. Especially since TLC didn’t give a regional siege ship either.

what does the indian faction have to do with celts split, thats one thing ive noticed on age 2 forums every thread just gets derailed for some reason, I get it we all have our wants and wishes but maybe we can keep topics to there own threads or whatever I am not your boss hf

part of this is the forum structure, where responses are just sorted chronologically. A system like reddit’s (or even youtube’s) where responses to a single post are grouped would help with this. (also a downvote function would be great)

Tbh I think that the best solution would be to add Irish and Scots civs, and leave the current Celts largely unchanged as…perhaps Gaels, or Picts. The main reason I think this is the best solution is that a lot of people seem to like the gameplay of the Celts civ, even the Woad raider people seem to like the mechanic, its just that its aesthetics are historically poor. For that reason I think keeping a civ that keeps those mechanics and the feel of the Celts civ intact is important, and shifting it up earlier I think is a good way to do it.

Adding Welsh I find to be less necessary, and honestly harder because of the fact that Longbows are something the English adopted from the Welsh, so in theory the longbow should be a Welsh UU, but it was extensively used by the English after, and removing that unit from the English would cause major backlash I think. I will say the Longbow has been powercrept of late, so maybe you could add a Welsh civ, make Longbows a shared unit between them both and give both of them new UUs? I’m not exactly sold on that though.

Bretons I think are entirely unnecessary.

Still, other than a Balkans DLC (which would basically finish the ongoing Slavs split) I think focus elsewhere at least a few DLCs-worth before going back to Europe

I’d prefer something more historical, Arthur would fit AoM better

The DLC I wanted

A Celt modification cannot come without a British isles DLC. I wanted one of them with the Saxons, Welch, Irish. Britons renamed to English and Celt Renamed to Scottish. Maybe adding the Picts. For an upcoming DLC I want an Alfred the great saxon campaign.

Now they have added the Saxons, god thing because for the DLC I wanted this will ad 4 new civilizations and 4 new campaigns, too much for a DLC. Good thing they add the Saxons in the next DLC.

The British isles DLC that I want now

Dual split rework for the Britons/English and Celts/Scottish. Ad Irish, Welch and maybe the Pict (3 new civilizations they can realistically do this). Ad a campaign for Alfred the great (having a saxon campaign merged with the Viking in the next DLC sound not good I prefer a pure saxon campaign). 4 campaigns : Irish, Welsh, Pict and Saxons (Alfred the great).

Britons/English

In the original games theyare intended to represent all the people (including the saxons) in England and Wales since 500 AD. An umbrella civilization but they represent mainly the English. A little rework is necessary, make a new UU the billhook. Longbowmen will become a regional unit replacing the crossbowmen and arbalester for them and the Welch. We can rename them English or keep the name Britons for nostalgia.

Welsh

They share the longbowmen with the Britons. THeir longbowmen must have lesse range than the english (losing bracer) but more damage and accuracy (have thumb ring and another civilization bonus or UT)
Maybe a knight UU. Their castle will look like the Caernarfon castle (I know he was build by the english but it’s very cool). I think they must have the paladin because they use use heavy cavalry (at least in Arthurian legend).

Celt/Scottish

Another umbrela name who represent now mostly the Scottish with a Pict UU. The actual Celt civilization must be keep mostly intact just change the name to Scottish and their icon (put the blue and white scottish flag instead of the triskeles). Maybe replacing the Woad raider by an unit who fit the same role as a fast infantry (maybe the gallowglass with a claymore like in AoE3 and AoE4). Maybe also a Clansman as second fast UU like those of AoE3 (If they did this the gallowglass will become a normal moving unit with heavy damage).
The celt icon (triskeles) is better to be reused for a Gaul civilization in Chronicles.

Two UU : Clansman (fast, replace the Woad raider. Maybe a shock infantry armor class. trained in barracks) and Gallowglass (heavy infantry in castle, deal zone damage).

Irish

The other civilization who must come with a celt split. Brian Boru campaign will be good.
As nostalgia I remember that the CD of Age of Empires were printed in Ireland !

Pict

Problematic civilization because their UU the Woad raider is already owmned by the Celt who represent the Scottish. If the Celt are reworked in Scottish without adding the Pict please at least keep the Woad raider as a scenario editor unit and make an official mod to reskin the gallowglass of the Scottish in Woad raider.

For the icon the Pict Double disc can be used on a shield, maybe a long shield like the one of the woad raider.

An official mod to reskin in Woad raider

If the Celt are reworked in Scottish without adding the Pict please at least keep the Woad raider as a scenario editor unit and make an official mod to reskin the gallowglass of the Scottish in Woad raider.

Reskin for Robin Hood hero unit

I want a reskin of Robin Hod, he must look like his icon, a green longbowmen.

Regional units

Siege warship
Britons/English and Celt/Scottish must retain the canon galleon because those two kingdoms used this ship in real history. All the other potential civilizations must have the catapult galleon because their never use gunpowder weapon on ship or even gunpowder for the Pict. Catapult galleon for Irish, Pict, Welch.

Hobelar
Light cavalry unit who come from Ireland and go in England, Scotland and Wales. Already present in AoE4 for the Lancaster variant of the English. Can be a complete light cavalry line or a regional upgrade of the actual light cavalry line. Cheaper but weaker. The only civilization I don’t want to have them are the Pict because is an ancient civilization.

Longbowmen
For the English and the Welch. English will stay the same (long range low accuracy). Welch will have less range but are more accuracy.

Mounted crossbowmen
Can be given to the Irish, English, Scottish and Welch. The only civilization I don’t want to have them are the Pict because is an ancient civilization. Irish can retain the horse archer (one member of the forum wrote that crossbow was not very used in Ireland)

I wouldnt worry about the current Celts, the main thing what could change is the Wonder, the Woad raider wont go anywhere, I would say the civ may end up as the Picts civ in all but name,

Campaign wise I feel like the baseline Celts faction wont get a new Campaign though just a gut feeling, not that there isn’t anything to work with pretty sure the devs could do a Campaign with the saxon kingdom of northumbria the two groups Fought a lot, or could do Events with the Vikings and how the Picts and the Gaels of dal riata united, to face the Vikings.

You do have a point given we have the Briton Faction, and the longbow, I am just sure there must be some Welsh fans out there who would be disappointed if it wasn’t at least looked at, and while yes there is a Briton faction, its pretty clear thats the English Faction in all but name, So I wouldn’t count them out fully no harm in at least brain storming, as for the longbow I am sure the devs could think of something like random the Welsh used the bow mainly for hunting I believe (stop me if I am wrong) maybe they could get a tech what turns vills into basic archers,

I didnt mean the legend, but Lucius Artorius Castus is an historical figure but to be fair to ya I dont think historians know a lot about him. Only that he won some battle what stopped the Anglo-Saxon Expansion

yea again dont know a lot about that part of France but if someone has the brains in that area please share.

I guess the 100 years war story can be told from a third perspective if the game adds them. The story could be played as brittany britons and franks similar to the dracula one.

I fear that just as a Welsh civ might be tough to make distinct enough from the existing Britons (who would be made English), a separate Breton civ night be tough to make distinct enough from Franks.

Was Brittany known for any sieges? The Celt civ has great siege and Paladins, so ironically it might fit Bretons more than it’d the Picts if it was to be renamed. But if it’s not Picts then the Woad needs a reskin. Any foot unit of Brittany that could fit the Woad Raider’s stats?

Lucius artorius castus is in classical antiquity, time of Marcus Aurelius or the Severan dynasty iirc so he couldn’t fend off the Saxons. What you meant as the historical Arthur is probably Ambrosius Aurelianus or Riothamus (they may be the same person) who fought in sub Roman Britain and Gaul at the end of the 5th century. An historical (stress on historical) Arthur campaign would be very interesting, I could do it myself now that Saxons are in game but would take forever.

thats the guy, my bad ty. Ambrosius Aurelianus - Wikipedia

Split or not, I’ve never met a Scandinavian who liked the original Viking civ. I’m sure some pro players might, but I’ve never met someone IRL, and I grew up with this game. The civ feels limp. I’ve said it before, and I’m going to say it until it’s fixed or until the trees are tired of listening. Limp civ. Useless. All civs need to work post imp.

I think what makes the Celts really problematic is the fact that the devs are not willing to rename or change the UU of any OG civ. The new DLC shows that Vikings are not being renamed and will keep its UU.

Never heard of this complaint. Heck most of the players went to still think they’re powerful

Honestly though, if they give seperate Scots and Irish civs, that would let the current Celts civ, even with no name change, just be assumed to be early era Celtic peoples (ie. Picts or Gaels) so I think I could kinda live with it in this case.

Or you just integrate Picts into Scots so the current Celts are turned into the Scots civ. Would make some sense, since the William Wallace campaign is the tutorial campaign. Would be kinda weird, but maybe you can make the train both of their UUs from the Castle, or just make Gallowglass the Barracks UU.

Alternatively, you could turn the current Celts into Irish, and change the Woad Raider for Kerns, playing into the lightly armored skirmisher archetype. The unit is replaced but its function remains the same.

Tbh, a full Celts split is definitely gonna ruffle some feathers, but realistically either of Scots or Irish can be turned into a civ that reflects the old Celts to some degree, even if some terms get changed.

I feel this is be the case for any of the OG civs what will get expanded on the baseline civ name will always remain, just keeps it open to other groups such as Iceland or even Dublin with the Norse-Gaels areas left out, what would be an unpopular excuse I am sure with a lot of people, I for one find it odd none of the new Viking factions will be called Norse, but hey maybe I am wrong.

In any case Celts will remain for any groups left out, what have some sort of Celtic Background, Or they just dont want to rebrand the classic civs is the other excuse, to me anyway I think Celts will be become the Picts in all but name with that Woad raider. Suddenly hope they do throw in a new Campaign for Celts now but na just my gut says no.

And the Devs will add in the Irish and Scottish, need to start brain storming ideas for them next.
( would love the Welsh though but maybe they are just to retained within the Briton Faction )

and again I know noting about Brittany, and the Gauls are probably gone during age 2 timeline although I remember being told there was some Fighting the Huns at the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields so I dont know.

More roman-gauls at any rate.

That’s pretty much is the Current Celts faction already,

That would change the Celts civ to much then you would have people mad and Ruffle feathers as you say,
Given the Vikings and saxons dlc coming it just seems more logical they would Expand Celts, following the same pattern if I am making sense.imo

vikings were for a long time considered to be one of the strongest civs. (no idea what’s the current meta, stopped watching tournaments) They are my favourite civ and are my most played civ in ranked, because they are fun and flexible.

Complete nonsense.

So it wouldn’t be a problem if Celts get renamed to Scots then, right?
