Celts Split

You can say that, and in so doing you’re excluding both a huge portion of the existing playerbase, and a huge portion of the potential playerbase. I’m all for you getting your classic civs mode where you can have all the old fashioned settings. Manually place down all your farms if you want, I don’t mind. Do not come and tell me that gamemodes that have been popular since the games release do not also deserve balancing.

Yeah, I can live with that too. Also, Crossil and Dugaul made some interesting points, basically Celts would be the umbrella for Picts and Scots, so the tutorial campaign(as much as I would like a new one) and the Woad Raider could stay for Celts. That would open the door for an Irish civ.

I’d rather be able to get Gallowglass for the Scots, unless you wanted it to be a Barracks Champion replacement or something

As mentioned, the devs dont seem to do that name changes hence thinking around it, add in Irish and Scottish - Celts will just remain, more then likely just picts in all but name. + you would prob have people mad if they change the Celts name for some reason just from reading forums in the past seem to be a large group who dont want the OG civ changed at all as to them they are just to iconic or something type of argument.

Someone will probably bring up the Learning Campaign with that all I will say is maybe see it as a band of rebels and once we get the Scottish Civ thats more the Kingdom of Scotland with Robert the Bruce. + it was barely a campaign anyway just a braveheart film nod

Or drop either Irish or Scottish and throw in Welsh or Brittany but I think its becoming clear Irish/Scottish are the main options.

Scots will get the Gallowglass or some new Pikeman unit and Irish (yes the irish had gallowglass to but they were Scottish frist ) options will be Kerns, Hoblers even maybe a new type of monk given the history,

I like that barrack champion upgrade idea maybe? could even make them a Civ faction unit shared for ally’s given Gallowglass were mercs.

This is why I think a DLC based on three factions (Celts, Britons and English) is the more credible scenario. No rename. Only refocus and reframing the factions. Celts => Irish and Scots (the Gaelic Celts). Britons => Welsh, Picts and others (the Brythonic Celts).

In addition a new campaign about Arthur/Riothamus (based on Geoffrey Ashe, David Drake and Brian Johnston books).

forgive I dont fully understand, are you saying to a dlc whats more Campaign focused and not new Civs like “Victors and Vanquished” ?

I dont know just going with my gut feel like the devs will just continue this expanding OG classic civs with “The Viking Sagas” as the recent example. There is just no way they would add Saxons, Danes and not give a thought on expanding the Celts as well down the line like think about it, the more time goes on the more the Celts civ will stand out as that odd fella.

Why should they add more book-based campaigns? One of the biggest criticisms about TTK is it’s based on the fictional book and not the actual time period that gives the book and expansion their name

More justified by than Viking Split. Gaels, Welsh would be my 2 with Celts being changed to Picts to keep the woad raider.

If its three civs than split Gaels into Scots and Irish

That ane exclusiding 2 of the new civs and CHINESE FROM THEIR OWN DLC

As in dont do Irish and Scottish together but instead just call them Gaels? opening the door for Welsh ok I will keep an open mind for brain storming, I to would love the Welsh they just seem so entrenched within the Briton civ with that longbow

I’m all for rename and rework but it seems unlikely so we’ll have to settle for Gallowglass as a 2nd UU, either as a Champion replacement or and aditional Barracks unit. Unless the devs could modify or remove the tutorial campaign as it is the only thing that links Scots and Picts.

People on the forum usually argue for not changing the gameplay, they are more lenient with renaming.

The devs’ decision not to rename seems to derive from nostalgia baiting instead: people who played the game as kids (like myself) who’ve returned recently don’t remember specific bonuses well, just the names of each civ associated with a specific vibe (i.e. Teutons = Castles stronk, Britons = arrows shot far). So the names of Ensemble civs probably aren’t changed in order to cater to returning players. Judging by myself, it’s not really necessary, but whatever. (Although I don’t really classify as “returning” now since I’ve been playing the game again for over half a year)

Just what I have experienced first hand, but sure some people will just argue about anything, your probably right though must be more of the case the devs just dont want to go near nostalgia if they can help it, I did see they did change the Mayan civ name to maya though.

yeah, but the name “Mayans” was just silly. It simply grammatically incorrect, akin to calling Britons “Britishes”.

Also as smiki pointed out, people who remember playing “Mayans” will still recognize them as “Maya”

And people who played Vikings are quite likely to recognize them as Norse. I’d argue even the people who played Celts would recognize whoever their successor in civ design is, like Gaels for instance. So what’s the issue, exactly?

Keeping old names is probably just a corporate way of pretending that it’s still the same game as decades ago. I don’t like this and I’d prefer to see a classic mode or an option to load a previous patch (or both).

AoE3 also had civ names changed btw, the two North American Native ones.

“Norse” and “Vikings” are very different words. when searching a list of civs for “Vikings” people won’t immediately make the connection that they are the same as “Norse”. Especially if they also see civs like “Slavs” and “Bulgarians” or “Italians” and “Sicilians” next to each other.

Well they don’t need to search the list of civs since they’re all in one screen.

a big fucking screen at this point. and it’s still sorted alphabetically

Just imagine if, instead of Battle Royal Mode (which died out after 2–3 months?), they’d have made a Classic Mode with just 18 civs and the 2000 balance (which, to be honest, was rubbish).
