They’re kinda limited to areas with existing assets. Otherwise in addition to making a map they’d have to make models for fauna like kangaroos to do an Australia map. There is Australian terrain and trees, but the hunts and treasures would have lots of placeholders.
A couple of maps from Age of Pirates mod:
1/ Corsairs of Mediterranean:
2/ Aztec Gold
3/ Adriatic Sea
4/ Kuril Islands
5/ Dead Sea
6/ Coming Soon: Mississippi
And we have many more
Emu would seem like the best option. The devs seem to have copied animals before (buffalos in Europe, and some deer I think).
There’s currently a tall South American bird that is grayish and could simply be renamed (I know, it’s not an emu nor does it have anything beyond a passing resemblance, but it would at least kinda work).
Maybe adding a little extra hp would be required (a reference to the Emu War in which the Australian military lost vs the flightless birds).
Human guardians would be easy, animals would be harder. But maybe a few could be renamed, thinking of Ethiopian Wolves as “Stray Dogs” or something. I haven’t really played around with custom treasures, but mixing Outlaw Rifles, Gunmen, and Blowguners would seem to work.
The lack of kangaroos would be extremely painful.
Slow down @BaltazarGreat the competition hasn’t started yet!
@M00Z1LLA Some map assets seem to be more easily moddable than others. Those flowers I showed are retextured japanese flower bushes.
DLC 2025
I don’t know anything about RMS, but if I did I would do some rework on existing maps:
Amazon:
-
It obtains a river trade route and some inexhaustible sources of fishing.
-
It has a competitive version where both sides start on the same bank of the river, while the other bank has some swamps and treasures.
Caribbean and ‘Spanish’ island:
-
Obtains naval trade route.
-
Areas far from the coast have different vegetation. That is, palm trees near the coasts, and dense forest in the central areas of the maps, with much more wood.
I mean, honestly, throwing a couple Australian map assets into the Baltic DLC for map makers would be a fun addition. Could even throw a few of them into Unknown. Just kangaroos and like three guardian units would be great. As was already pointed out, Australian map textures and trees already exist, so three guardians and kangaroos and the community could make very convincing maps without much modding.
What do you mean by this? There are similar maps that can claim to be Australian, or there are actually Australian biomes and terrain.

I was going in large part off of @M00Z1LLA ’s comment, though I kinda think I remember seeing some in there a long time ago when I was stumbling around the the editor. At a minimum, I think some that look close enough to pass are in there, but I don’t know for sure.

Exactly. Rhea have a close enough resemblance to pass for an emu, dogs and Ethiopian wolves could be dingos and tasmanian tigers, but Australian maps would still be lacking without kangaroos.

I think it’s fine to make do with repurposed assets for a fan made project but what they’ve done with the official European maps is lazy and wrong. There are a lot of errors in the European maps that should be fixed.
a lot of errors in the European maps
You should revive this topic. I would like to add some suggestions.
Feel free to add to it. As far as I know none of those issues were fixed so the post is still current and relevant even if it’s old.
I’m not afraid about flora, but for f.e. Australian maps you need special fauna like kangaroos etc… Making such assets is quite complicated even though definitely not impossible.
Check Age of Pirates: Aztec Gold (based on Amazon) and Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s similar to that what you’re talking about.
Besides Australia, we should have all assets to work on the black spots in Africa, Europe and Asia. We even have a penguin for a Antarctica map like in aoe2. Wood could come from changed treasure ships.
For Australian animals, I will start making some noice on discord and other posts here and reddit. Maybe the devs hear us.
Huge respect for Baltazar, the shear work that has gone into AoP is so insane.
WOW, VERY COOL MAPS BRO
For anyone following this, the community thread is now open!
I like the little cliff cutouts along the river, it’s a really nice touch, especially when you cross the river up into the extra native TP’s.
Age of Pirates already has some Australia / Oceania maps and we plan to integrate more. We use a set of Australian animals from @InnateJaguar501 which contains animals like Kangaroos, Emus, Cassowaries, Tasmanian devils, pigs, and many others. Plus of course Australian and Oceanian natives, outlaws, mercenaries, and specific treasures.
I know the contest is over but anyway, some of our maps:
1/ Australia
2/ New Zealand
3/ Hawaii
