There are translation errors in the French version. And some new words are very weird, unlike their Legacy game counterparts which were better.
But overall it’s okay, there are good translations and some units have Greek or Latin names that are better than the legacy game (I’m thinking of the Petrobolos and the Man O’ War unit which had very generic names in French before).
I have compiled several translation errors into a shared Google Sheet (read-only access). This document is subject to change as I find new errors, but I will note the updates (in the thread and in the document):
To help developers, next to the co########## I added the identifiers of the string_table file (where all the game translations are located) that the correction refers to.
French friends, if you have any other french translation feedback, post it first in this thread, and after I will update the document.
First errors found:
In version: v.100.17.18697.0 (477449R)
Glaneur → Amasseur (Legacy name) or Récolteur
NB: The “Glaneur” term is very specific and sounds pretty bad in French. The real translation, that of the original game, is “Amasseur”. But “Récolteur” works just as well.
Also, the term is usually mistranslated in the whole game, not just for the norse unit, but about all the other villagers.
And above all, it sounds really weird.
Drakkar → Chaloupe (Legacy name) or Langskip (Historical norse name)
NB: The hammer ship name was “Drakkar” in the legacy game (now “Drekki”), and not the arrow ship (“Chaloupe” in legacy, now “Drakkar”), It’s confusing.
Moreover, the three norse ship names mean the same thing currently: “Drakkar”, “Drekki” and “Navire dragon” = ship with a dragon figurehead.
Turme → Turma or Turmae (Plural)
NB: All or almost all Atlantean military units have latin names), except for the Turma. Which is very weird because in the legacy version, this name were indeed in Latin and it sounded good.
And The latin legacy name sound better (personal opinion)
![40 ##################################################################
9) ####### → ################# The greek legacy name sound better (personal opinion)
![41 ####################################################################
10) Hélépole → Hélépolis
The greek legacy name sound… good but the newest is fine (personal opinion)
Uté Myth. → Unité Myth. or Unité Mythique
NB: It’s a typing error. Found in all Myth unit and many tech description. Use the long version if there is space preferably.
Another similar thread reporting this error was created by @Ogmios_21 French localization - Description of units when hovering
marin → Marin (with a capital letter)
NB: In the cinematic before “Consequences” scenario.
Rekenna titaaniportti → Construisez une porte des titans
NB: The steam archivement "Déchainement ########## (Build a Titan Gate archivement) has its description in Finnish and not in French.
murailles fortifiées à distance → fortifications à distance
NB: It doesn’t mean anything “murailles fortifiées à distance”. I had to read the English version to understand what that meant.
Laquais → Larbin or Serviteur
NB: The word “Laquais” refers more to a valet or a domestic.
“Larbin” is a more accurate translation. “Serviteur” is better (it’s the legacy name), but there is a conflict with the atlantean water healer unit (but it can be renamed “Serviteur des mers” (sea servant) )
Age of Mythology Retold version: v.100.17.22308.0 (481060R)
toxotes → taxiarques
NB: Since the last version, the name Toxote has been changed to Taxiarque in French (Legacy name). The old name Toxote still remained in the historical description of the unit.
Raid de cavalerie → Cavalerie de raid
NB: You have to reverse the two words for it to make sense in French.
The name was good in the previous version!!!
The error is not present everywhere (for medium, heavy and champion version it’s correct)
Attaques de Hack → attaques tranchantes
Attaques de Pierce → attaques perçantes
NB: All the keyword Hack and Pierce in descriptions are not translated.
It seems to be a code problem. In the game’s string_table file, the keywords are translated correctly.
Arsenal → Armurerie
Arsenal des nains → Armurerie des nains
NB: Correct translation of “Armory”. And “Armurerie” was the correct name in the origial game. The name is correct in the historical description though.
Colline fortifiée → Fort de la colline
NB: The name in the original game was good. The subject is a Fort, not a Coliine (hill).
Found in the Hill fort description and the Asgardian Hill Fort power description.
Source curative → Source soignante
NB: The legacy name sound better (personal opinion)
drakkar → dreki
NB: In the Arctic Winds description. A good illustration of the confusion of Nordic ship names in French (see my second post in this thread). This upgrade concerns ‘dreki’ (plural drekar in English) and not drakkars (the name given to the Longboat in french) which is the plural of dreki…
deux → trois
NB: In the egyptian tutorial. The voice says “trois choses” (three things) and not “deux choses” (two things) in the first subtitle. It’s disturbing.
I know that the subtitles are generally different from the dubbing (you can see this throughout the campaign), but this one is quite disturbing.
Age of Mythology Retold version: v.100.17.31993.0 (490745R)
Âge de légende → Âge mythique
NB: This is the exact translation of Mythic age. Besides being the legacy name.
Âge de légende → Âge mythique
NB: In the Etri Dialog of the mission 4 of the The Golden Gift campaign. Eitri correctly says “Âge mythique” in his line of dialogue.
Les résultats des pistes → la précision
NB: This error is present in several technologies that improve accuracy (including ballistics). “Les résultats des pistes” doesn’t mean anything…
Bonus: In the Ballistic description, the term “murailles fortifiées” is still there and still means nothing. “Fortification” it’s the correct term.
Statue de Mélage → Statue de Mélagius.
NB: In the new atlantis campaign. The general is called “Mélagius” and not Mélage. The name is correct in the statue description.
+1 to most of these. Missing translation for major gods was fixed recently, although Ra does not list his new berry bonus (Oranos lists that Hero Oracles can also build Sky Passages, but I don’t remember seeing that option in-game?)
Spear of Panic was fixed, but Ptah’s Electron Bullets is not currently localized.
To add on the thread: there is a strange translation with the Titanomachy tech, “des armes supplémentaires” should be “des bras supplémentaires”.
Can we not simply use towers / forts instead of ranged fortifications?
I’ve updated the document. There are quite a few untranslated messages that are now translated. But there are virtually no other corrections (grammar, logic and word meanings).
The Arctic Winds description is for me the most serious because it indicates that it improves the wrong unit.
Even if the rest is still not great… The translation correction process is pretty bad and, from what I’ve read, it’s even worse in other languages.
I do wish localization had more attention put into it too, it’s unfortunate.
The Peltast entry still mentions toxotes instead of taxiarques, same issue with the campaign achievement requiring you to train 10 additional hoplites and toxotes in the Omens mission.
The following myth units are lacking a period after “Unité mythique” and before the next sentence: Cyclops, Wadjet, Anubite, Frost Giant, Kraken, and Minions from the Mummy.
The Greek scout compendium entry claims you can train more if you need, which is false. The original game did not have that issue.
(Vous pouvez en former davantage si nécessaire → Vous ne pouvez pas en former davantage)
Olympian Weapons uses the translated/alternate name to refer to Poseidon’s cavalry, instead of the Greek name (second red highlight), which can be confusing.
For a while I was puzzled by Dwarven Breastplace, and now I see why: it mentions a wrong unit (and wrong translation?) entirely.
Here’s the issue with Titanomachy I previously mentioned. (armes → bras)
I don’t know about other languages, but I’m fairly certain that the use of missiles to talk about projectiles in french is incorrect, as I can only think of the explosives modern ones! (missiles → projectiles)
Merci, j’ai ajouté tous ces retours dans le document Google Sheet du post principal.
Après la dernière mise à jour, ces erreurs sont toujours là.
Par contre, la traduction manquante des Balles d’Électrum a été corrigée.
It’s been some updates since then which had “Localization updates” listed in changes, but still most of these have yet to be fixed. Manticore, Lion and Valkyrie statue, as well as the damage type in tooltips have been fixed, but the rest was not.
I also noticed the order of entries in the compendium only seems to follow the alphabetical order on English: with other langages (or at least French), it does not adapt. For example: Arctic wolf (Loup arctique), Avenger (Vengeur) and Axe thrower (Fantassin à hache) are still listed in A, when they should be elsewhere.

Yes, I updated my document
“Partie Sauvegardée” has become “Sauvegarder une partie”. It’s almost right, but the correct term is “Sauvegarder la partie”.
