Crash to Desktop - Few minutes into every game

Hey all, I’d really like to play this game but I’m having issues with crash to desktop that occurs a few minutes into every game (single player or multiplayer). The game will hang for just a second, occasionally with a second of stuttering audio, and then crash to desktop. No error messages. The OS doesn’t crash, just the game.

i7-9700k @ 3.6GHz
32GB RAM
EVGA NVIDIA 1080Ti
850w EVGA PSU
Internet 1Gbps (clocked at 700mbps through SpeedTest)
Windows 10 Pro
Purchased and launched through Steam

If I use a GFX card benchmark to stress test the card (e.g. FurMark) there is no instability. GPU temp at about 60C during gameplay. CPU temp about the same. CPU and GFX card are water cooled and there’s excellent airflow across the radiators.

I’ve tried the following fixes (unsuccessfully):

  • Complete uninstall of graphic drivers (with DDU) and re-install to latest version.
  • Reset graphic card settings to manufacturer default.
  • Windows up to date.
  • Verified integrity of game files through Steam (and have also done a complete uninstall / reinstall).
  • Latest version of C++ redistributables.
  • Turned off Steam and Nvidia in-game overlays.
  • Added to Whitelist for antivirus (Kaspersky)
  • Checked for missing .dll file in system32 (not missing)
  • System restarts
  • Unable to locate the .exe file to try to launch independent of Steam. There doesn’t seem to be one for AoE IV?
  • Reduced graphic settings in-game.
  • Tried windowed mode.

It’s a very stable PC and should be able to run everything without an issue. If you can suggest a fix, I’d be very interested. There doesn’t seem to be an error code or anything that I’m getting, so I don’t even know how to report my issue to Microsoft for them to fix in future patches.

Thanks for considering.

Same happening here…
I made the same configurations, and the game keeps crashing after some minutes. And this is not happening exclusively to me, some of my friends are facing the same issues as well. Frustrating, we just got the game only for multiplayer and this is exactly what we are unable to do.

Looks like Devs are already aware of the problem and looking for a solution…

Yeah same thing happened here. i hope they find the solution, for the mean time i’ll stop playing this game

I have the same issue. No fixes here on the forum or on the internet.

At some random point just both of my screens are going to blackscreen, then the image comes back and age closes without any error report.

Edit: I didn’t had any problems in the beta. I bought it at microsoft store and use xbox app to start.

Well, I was finally able to play a full game! I hesitate to say that it’s “fixed” until I try a few more games, but the issue looks like it may have had to do with audio and HDMI. My computer’s audio output is through a typical aux jack and I have DisplayPort cables to my monitors for the video output.

When I opened my audio devices in Windows, I saw that there were audio outputs for HDMI so I just disabled them, leaving only the bare minimum number of audio devices necessary.

Bizarrely, that’s the only thing I’ve changed and it hasn’t crashed yet. Possible that some of us are having issues related to sound / sound drivers and not the graphics card (although the two are strangely connected because of HDMI).

Never mind. Crashed again.

Well, it’s not so often, but once in a while the game will just shut off, no warnings just straight to desktop. It can happen within 2 minutes of a game or 30 minutes. However, it seems like it’s prone to crashing consecutively for a 2-4 games, and not crash for 10+ games. This is extremely irritating and I hope there will be a solution before ladder comes out, because then it will be downright unpleasant. The game has no reconnect feature so you just straight up take a loss. Has happened a maybe a dozen times out of over a 100 games, and sometimes annoyingly when I’m about to close a victory and the game just exits. There was one day where the game literally crashed as OP, like 4 games in a row, 2 min in and crash.

Today I had 2, one a few hours ago and one before I posted this. Former crashed 20’ish minutes in and the latter about 10.

Like OP I’m running a very well cooled PC, albeit RTX3090 and R5600x, all stock and nothing OC. Generally my GPU is hitting 65-70C, I’m fine with that temp since the fans are very silent and that temp is well below the mark for throttling or heat shutoff…

My friend has the same problem, windows event viewer shows an error in a file. He can’t play a single game until the end.
Did the devs noticed that? do we know an estimate for a fix? that’s really annoying, we have basically the same pc configuration and mine does not crash.

Same problem here.

I’m trying to play with my two kids. we all crash at different times. we have no problems playing other more demanding games like Gears of war 5.

EDIT: solved
You cannot family share xbox gamepass games on PC.

If you check “C:\Users\<user>\OneDrive\Documents\My Games\Age of Empires IV\warnings.txt” you can get more information.

Here’s what shows up for mine:

I updated all my drivers, and uninstalled and reinstalled the game, and it seems to be working now.

Did you guys turn on v-sync

For those who say you can’t family-share Game Pass on PC: you should make separate MS accounts and Gamertags for each of your family members. Sign them into Windows using their own MS account, then sign them into the Xbox app with the same account. Now, sign into the MS Store as the Game Pass holder, signing them out of the Store first, if needed. As far as I know, the only game where this explicitly doesn’t work is Minecraft Dungeons.

Hey all! If you’re experiencing this, please contact support here with a summation of your issue as well as your DxDiag and any Crash Logs. It’ll help the team greatly!

Thanks!

Same issues reported here–weirdly it seems to be happening with more frequency than it used to (even before the patch this week). Still getting the same issue after the patch, few minutes into a game and it crashes. For a while there it only happened once in about every 4 or 5 games, now it is constant every few minutes into a game. I’m on Steam.

@SavageEmpire566, I reported mine to the support site and the issues was forwarded to the Devs, my support tech said. I hope more folks experiencing the issue report it :-).

@BlackEagle3114, for my case I’ve tried with vsync both turned on and off, and lowered the settings as well a few times, still happening. For a second I thought it was caused by my machine overheating, due to the nature of how it crashed (sounds still playing, black screen). But the temp in my box is well under 70F according to an external temp gage, and it happens even a few seconds into the game, with the metal on my box still being cool.

I am going to give what OrphanZombie908 suggested and try and reinstall. Will report back. [EDIT: Uninstalled/Re-Installed, still the same issue and crash]

Cheers

same with me

Game crashes randomly to desktop. Sometimes after a few minutes, in other cases after 30 minutes in multiplayer game. So far it did not yet occur in Singleplayer, only in Multiplayer games.

I already uninstalled and reinstalled the game and updated all drivers (graphiccard, chipset, etc.). Temperature also looks good (CPU 70 Celsius with Ryzen 5800x)

Application crashed.

I’m having the exact same issue.
I was playing the game for a few weeks with no crashes at all.
after a windows update the game started crashing after a couple of minutes of gameplay, multi or single.
this has made the game unplayable.

In my case, the crashes were due to my pagefile being too small on a fairly optimized and stable 16 GB RAM PC. The tutorial crashed after a pair of minutes of gameplay. The event viewer showed page file related entries in the system event log occurring at the same time of the crash.

I checked the advanced system settings (performance section) , and I only had a fixed size pagefile of 800MB. I changed that to a system managed pagefile, and the crashes went away. This game eats a lot of RAM.

The game was crashing for me every few minutes with the same log, containing:

Failed to Present. HRESULT = 0x887a0005 - The GPU device instance has been suspended. Use GetDeviceRemovedReason to determine the appropriate action.
Device removed reason = 0x887a0006 - The GPU will not respond to more commands, most likely because of an invalid command passed by the calling application.

While the error code (0x887a0006) is very generic and can mean anything I tried solution that worked for people in other games - I changed TDRDelay value in Windows registry to 10 seconds. This value defines the timeout for GPU tasks after which TDR mechanism ( Timeout detection and recovery) kills the process.

I’ve been playing the game for a week without a crash now, the only thing I’ve noticed is that the game can freeze for few seconds which I haven’t experienced before, but that is 100 times less annoying than crashes and also might be a proof that the fix is actually working (my assumption is that those freezes would’ve been crashes before).

Please keep in mind that this is just a workaround and do this on your own risk! Also if you’re getting other log message like out of memory or anything else, then this fix shouldn’t work.

I am having the same, after few minutes the game crashes instantly, no report , anything.

I am playing with Xbox Game Pass. Everything updated. I also reinstalled the Graphics Driver and game.

My PC specs: GTX1070 Graphics Card with Intel i7 6700K processor(no overclocking, temperatures are normal) and 16GB RAM.

I found these failures in the warning.txt document.

I hope devs can find some solutions about the problem.
