Any chance of a new RUS civilization being added to the game? The RUS had many groups fight along side them to fend off the Golden Horde. Perhaps you could use one of them as a secondary RUS civ. I would love to see where else the RUS could go in this game. Despite their rough edges, the RUS are a very important civilization in history. They helped shape the world, and stopped growing evils at great personal cost.
The other possible variant with the Rus, in my opinion, could be the ***Cossacks¨¨. The other option, a version of the Tsardom of Russia, although they would also have unique Cossack units. Better be the Cossacks.
Cossacks
In Age of Empires 3, they just created a Cossack Revolution for the new DLC, 100% focused on Cossacks. I took some screenshots before the beta ended:
If they already have the models, they could very well consider a future civilization with them.
That’s also a very interesting prospect. Although, most games aren’t played on water maps. Would they perform well on land maps in comparison to the RUS? The main mechanic I would like to have changed for the new RUS civ is how they accumulate gold. The Hunting bonus they get for hunted meat is great, but having to set up 15-20 cabins around trees for maximum gold profits is excessive and tedious. That method of gold accumulation makes the RUS a bad choice for water maps, and maps with limited trees. The problem with them being water based is that it would segregate them to water maps just as the RUS are segregated to land maps with a bunch of trees. That would definitely balance the two civs though, and the RUS already have a unique fleet of naval ships so it might be neat doubling down on that for the new RUS civilization. If they could make that work and it still be a fun civ to play on land as well, then that would also be a great new RUS civ variant. Thanks for the reply.
I don’t think so. The idea is that since the Rus are good on land, Novgorod should be good on water (that way you have more variety)…
In the video game Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms (in its Teutonic campaign), the Novgorod faction stands out for its focus on ranged cavalry and mounted combat. Its special or distinctive units are:
Boyar Sons: Elite cavalry with javelins who can fight very versatilely both at range and in melee.
Cossack Cavalry: Fast horsemen armed with bows, ideal for harassing and breaking the morale of enemy heavy infantry.
Novgorod Horse Archers/Urban Infantry: Support troops that complement their northern regional army.
I think an RUS Variant would be better, then a complete new Civ. Novgorod would be the best choice. Although I would have liked to see Cossacks in the game as well.
Yes, the thing is, the Cossack Hetmanate is too late for AoE 4, but at least what I tried in AoE 3 isn’t a bad revolution, and in fact, it’s very good…
Technically, the Rus civilization is already Kievan Rus’ because of the Golden Gate of Kyiv… but generally, based on the flag and other landmarks, it’s Moscow/Muscovy…
“Kievan Rus’” is a scientific construct that is used for the convenience of historians to avoid confusion. In authentic sources from that period, the state was called either “Russian land” or “Rus’.”
Nah, it’s too late…it has to be variants from the 15th century and earlier…Novgorod, Smolensk, Chernihiv, even if you go further west, Poland, Lithuania and Teutonic Order/Livonia (basically the ones we have in AoE 2 and 3 but in AoE 4)…
The Grand Duchy of Lithuania as an alternative to to the Grand Duchy of Moscow. — a good idea. The Gediminids also considered themselves the gatherers of Russian lands.
