Destructability of Walls and Ships

Why only the walls and of generic ships in the game don’t have destruction graphics? They instantly switch to rubbles instantly.

I could swear ships have destruction animations?

Not for galley, war galley, galleon, fire galley, fire ship, fast fire ship, demo raft, demo ship, heavy demo, cannon galleon, trade cog, and transport ship.

Yea I pointed this out when DE first came out. Also ships don’t even have animations (like oars etc…). In AOE1DE the ships looked better and had animations, can’t remember if they had sinking animations as well but they definitely had movement animations. Its kinda lame and I think its just corner cutting. Its just jarring when on the same screen you can see water units with destruction animation next to ones with no destruction animations. I never understood why AOE2 was always so inconsistant with everything. Like they bring in cool conepts but never bother implementing it completely. Also if you go back and compare, AOE1DE looks so much better than AOE2DE in so many ways. It pains me that the QOL improvements that were introduced in ROR didn’t just get applied straight into AOE1DE.

I assume gameplay reasons.
It was to be instantly visible when a wall or ship dies to be able to do the right micro management decisions.

Then why do UUs have a destruction animation ?

It’s an oversight, like oars from RoR and Chronicles : the devs put more animations on newer models and forgot to add them back to old ones. And while we’re talking about ships, there also is the issue of sails (that should inflate with wind when the ship is moving)

I don’t need to elaborate on my position, I often say I’m greedy when it comes to fancy skins.

Also houses don’t have snow sprites iirc

What? This is quite sad, I used to admire that detail, snow on roofs. :expressionless_face:

An Editor-only wall, the Aqueduct, has destruction animations for every direction.
In pre-DE versions, before the introduction of unique destruction animations, there was a dust cloud when buildings were destroyed, but the buildable walls in DE instantly turn into rubble without a visual effect (funnily, this also applies to walls in vanilla AoE1).

The animated sails are something that should really be re-introduced.

The Catapult Ship (BfG) has both animated oars and catapult, the Lou Chuan only the animated catapult, the Dromon has neither. Hopefully, there will be consistency one day.

Non-unique sinking animations of different sizes, like most generic ships in AoE2DE.

I think normal houses never had snow on the roofs to begin with, but I’m not sure tbh.

Is that the HD or the CD version ?

Battle for Greece ships have animated oars so why not AOE2DE? LAZY.

Don’t know but definitely not DE which is what I own
Maybe someone with an older version can check if snow on regular houses was ever a thing ?

Looking back at CD Conquerors, there was no snow on houses

Nor in the HD version

(I know Huns do not have houses but the Franks in this mission do have houses)

yes and I also know why
In-game the sprites are rotated randomly for each house
1 house = 3 different graphics
Can’t place snow properly ontop if the roof angles change randomly ^^

For it to become an issue preventing to load the right snow sprite for the right house model, I smell spaghetti code.

I just went back to AOE1DE to see if I remembered some details correctly and it amazes me just how much better that game looks! The units have more angles of movement so when they turn its a lot smoother. Everything is way more crisp and looks HD. ROR in AOE2DE looks blurry! Also the ships even had cool burning animations when they took damage with flames. AOE2DE ships don’t have that. Some of the ships definitely have animated oars but not all of them. No animated sails either from what I can see. But also the water itself looks soooo good. And teh destruction animation of the ships while not a proper sinking animation has more frames so at least it looks a bit smoother. And in any case is more consistant at least because all the ships are the same whereas in AOE2DE some ships get sinking animations while others dont.

Shortcuts and sloppiness. Even eye candy items in ROR were rendered blurry even in UHD. Still not fixed.

Oh man and I just saw the flames the fireships spew in AOE1DE. It looks SOOOO COOL! Ah how I wish we could get that game back but with all the QOL improvements of AOE2.

Look how crisp and clear the units and terrain looks.
