Devs want to know what we'd love. Just look at the forum topic stats

New surprise DLC on 25th anniversary? and New DLC Inbound!

These two topics primarily discussed a hypothetical, and then the teased, Sino adjacent DLC.

Individually they are 2nd and 10th highest replied topics in the history of the forum, and together they’d nearly tie the 1st place topic.

Individually the are the 15th and 16th most viewed topics, and together they’d be the 4th most viewed topic.

The interest in a medieval…-> MEDIEVAL ← Chinese related DLC, sustained discussion over 8 months that resulted in, had it not been split into two topics, the 4th most viewed topic and just barely missing out on the most replied topic.

There was and is so much interest that it’s a top 5 topic in the history of the forums, and easily the most popular topic since the DoI related Any hints for “Porto” AOE2 DLC? from 2022, over two years prior to when the first topic started.

I do not believe that devs have no idea what we want. They obviously know it and definitely should know it. That is why they release Asian ‘civs’ instead of European civs. But it turns out that …

I don’t disagree, but these are the hardest numbers I can find to quantify that support.

It’s almost like, after multiple Euro-centric DLCs, people really really want to see other parts of the world’s Middle Ages history fleshed out or something.

Asia is THE big one. The sheer volume of land mass, variety of cultures, history and militaries makes it a feast for the senses. And yet…this gestures at 3K.

I would consider that insulting

AOE games especially after DE had been seeking better and more authentic proper representations of the new civs and campaigns . They did research and the work to ensure their quality. This is evident by the fact that the most of the whataboutism the shills use is mostly before the conquerors (25 years ago fyi) or FE (originally a mod)

And yet when it comes to China, they picked the easiest, the no-brainer, the most pop culture-exploited one, the first name on the list, even if it did not fit the game, when you have a LOT of good choices out there

It’s like saying “we think you have the money and lack the standard for quality. Just come and consooom”

It’s like a WW2 game that got increasingly accurate weapons and units, then suddenly released a Japanese DLC with ninja and One Piece.

Especially when you also consider that of all the civs that still don’t have campaigns, we have three AoK/AoC civs that still don’t have campaigns right next to each other. And there’s and easy five china adjacent civs to add.

Soooooooo much potential squandered

Understatement of the century :moai:
At the bare minimum, we could have gotten a Three Kingdoms DLC based on the real history of the time period (I wouldn’t like that anyway). Instead they based everything off the dramatized, ficticious version of events lmao.

We have 47 real civilizations, and 3 “forces” from a book.

Might as well add gravity, the strong nuclear force, and electromagnetism as civs. those are forces from a book, and a non-fiction book at that.

I’ll also add, to the “we need to grow the game”. A DLC set in China would have also done it. Name it something that would grab headlines in China, done.

There are a lot of negative reviews, in Chinese, asking why Wu, Shu & Wei are in when they are just the Han Chinese (like we already have in the game). Some even calling it offensive. With plenty of comments asking where the Tanguts or Bai are.

Isaac Newton campaign when? His gravity empire was very advanced for its time.

I don’t see what’s wrong with Three Kingdoms, it’s a totally underepresented setting in this media, no other videogame depicted it, ever!!!

OMG there was an article the aoe fb page shared that tried to argue that. to paraphrase “3k is underrepresented in RTS in recent history”.

FWIW, if you ask Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Isaac Newton was probably the smartest scientist in history evidenced by just how far ahead of the curve he was compared to his contemporaries, and the only other scientist that comes close is Einstein, but I digress.

I’ve read it and it’s so terrible. The best part is this one:

“Age of Empire’s biggest strength has long been its historical focus, and that’s still true here.”

Yeah… I don’t think the devs particularly care about history anymore, if they share this article as if it was an amazing analysis.

Yeah any of those industry articles are worthless, and it’s not just gaming.

Agree… My thoughts around this also gave me the impression that the Wu, Shu, and Wei, are not Chinese (in a truly pure-like way), due to the fact that the Chinese are a playable Civ.

Exactly the complaints I have read.
