well, this means the game will get less buys, and less people will play it, cause not every one likes windows 10.
No, because I already have Windows 10 and it’s a free upgrade from older versions of Windows. It is of course slightly disappointing as a more limited game means fewer players, but I understand Microsoft wanting to promote their platform.
As a programmer, i understand why Microsoft wants to keep AOE exclusively on Windows 10, and i think it’s fair for the company, besides the fact that it’s easier to build a good game (with great performance, without bugs) when you’re focusing at only one platform, and one operational system. But as a player, i know that any kind of exclusive game limits the multiplayer, because every fan of multiplayer mode wants to play games that have huge communities, and that is hardly the case of AOE DE if they only develop the game for Windows 10. Most of us are here for the nostalgia, we like old things, so it will upset us, or even demotiavte us, if we are forced into windows 10 just to play AOE… I’m trying to analyse it all, it’s just my opinion. In fact, I’m using Windows 10 right now, and i will be able to play the game as soon as it comes out anyway
A project like this comes with a few nasty challenges. First the graphical support for 4K and second the usage of the MS cloud in which they heavily invested the last decade. The last explains the extensive lifting they had to do on the networking part in the code. Actually AOE Online was the first cloud based Age Of Empires version. It failed because they pulled the plug on GFWL and also general maintenance en operational costs where high, so it was not profitable enough to sustain. Despite of being a bad AOE game, a lot of players ended up frustrated because they put money into the game and didn’t get back any credit or new services for their invested money. I guess and hope MS learned their lessons from the past and they will make sure this version becomes definitive indeed, not only high definition. For that you might need more different types of gameplay, which make this project even more difficult to start with. This will be a another fine test for their cloud platform for sure. You can only do it right one time, so I can understand they are doing this on their own preferred development platform first. There are a lot of pitfalls though.
Everyone I know runs Windows 10 for their games and multimedia, so no ?
Yes, this game is going to die quickly (like every other Winstore game if we dont get it on other platforms).
The WinStore + Win10 exclusivity combo feels like a death setence to our beloved game.
I mean I’m all for the CONVENIENCE of having everything on Steam.
I PREFER everything on Steam
But I’m also not going to be all “Well if it’s not on Steam I’m not going to buy it”. I like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The newer games are only on Origin. I’m not going to go "well I’m not going to buy those games because they’re not on Steam.
I like Diablo and Starcraft. Those are only on Battle.net. I’m not going to say “Well those games aren’t on Steam so I’m not goign to buy them.”
Ultimately I have a preference. That preference is Steam. But I’m not going to not buy a game just because its not on Steam.
I am happy either way.
Took the free upgrade to win 10 from 7 when it was out. And am really satisfied with it.
They might eventually make it available to other markets/pc.
No, as i can get it (have win10)
but if it were on steam it would be better

Single players focused games die eventually. This is not a single player focused game.

Exactly why it will die.
Halo Wars died very quickly, same for the Call of Duty titles (microsoft even had to do refunds, because nobody was playing on their platform).
Killer Instict also died out as a PC game, it is only playable because its cross-platform.
Literally every multiplayer has been a disaster in the WinStore enviroment. Same for the atrocious GFWL a few years ago.
You guys remember Age of Empires Online, right? We all know how that turned out.

Windows 10 Store Refunds ‘Call of Duty’ Player Because Nobody's Playing It

Those games are either bad or have alternatives, that’s why they are dead in Windows store. If you don’t have an alternative and if it’s a good game it’ll succeed. I think AOE has enough fanbase and I don’t think people care that much about the platform they are playing as long as it doesn’t cause any problems.
With some hardware recently becoming “unsupported” and more potentially coming, I think it’s short sighted to release it only to the windows store. If they made it available on steam and also as a downloadable game from the windows store then at least if you buy it but can’t afford a new computer, you may be able to still play it. Linux and Mac compatible versions would be great as well. The best way to sell a pc game is to make it as easy to buy as possible. I realise the game likely won’t run on older hardware, but I have a desktop that’s now not supported anymore, and it still runs new games at medium to high settings.
History is what pisses me off, wrong history happening again.
You Microsoft little greedy devies just want to create the “Games for Windows Live” all over again, but this time is even worse, my making this ‘exclusive for Windows 10’ nonsense added to the entire AoE franchise you are building the foundation to break any relationship with Steam or any other gaming platform, hoping to see all the AoE community under your greedy shadow, you know perfectly, that won’t happen, what Microsoft are doing is burying the franchise.
I purchased all the retail CD games, all the AoE Online content, the steam 3, 2HD, MEE and every single DLC just to support you and hoping for a new game someday, I’m sure you remember what you did with AoEO, It will happen again if you follow this path, just think for a moment, what do you think that will happen when Microsoft decides to shutdown the Windows 10 store to the Age IV Online?
Think about that, then make it 4 times worse, because all modern AoE games will be under that only platform, and devs won’t care about old Steam versions anymore, all dead.
As a fan who’s been playing since 4 (just smashing the keyboard on my father’s computer) when the first game were released, yes, I’m pissed of because I don’t expect this platform to be any good, I was a Windows Phone user, I was a Games for Windows Live user, I’ve seen what happens when Microsoft gives up on something, and I’m a proud Windows 10 user, but I’m no longer supporting you, not with this.
I’m not happy about purchasing any of your games until you decide to release the game on Steam, a widely used platform that any PC gamer uses nowadays.
Feeling: Complete sadness.
Guess what, DX12 is amazing; Win10 FTW; ♥ ∞
Yes. Because I wouldn’t be able to play it. Either upgrade and play it and lose hundreds of other games that don’t run on 10, or stay where I am and deal with not being able to play one game that’s just prettier than something I already have CD’s for. I really hope this isn’t the plan for AoE4 as well.
Based on this vote, I would strongly consider adding support for older operating systems.
I have windows 10, so its not that big of an issue.
Yes. Microsoft slapped PC players in the face once already. You remember G4WL and its sunset and all the problems we have and had?
So yes, I will be upset if AOE4 or the definitive editions of predecessor games only are going to be purchasable/playable via Microsoft’s own store.
My favourite is GOG, but I could live with Steam as well. If it will be released on Steam I’d buy it on sale, if it will be released on GOG most likely I’d purchase it fullprice. But definitely I will skip the game if it will be purchasable via MS store only. I don’t let me fool twice and I never forgot what Microsoft did to us PC players.

I agree with your comment so much. Nothing else to add to your words, except…
„Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.“
