Truth be told, this doesn’t upset me in the slightest. Not because I like the exclusivity, but because I remember what happened to Halo 2. I don’t know why Microsoft has forgotten… but Halo 2 was supposedly a vista exclusive, and Microsoft insisted it would not work on XP. It had been out for less than a day before someone patched it to work with previous versions of Windows. Without breaking any laws. This is often sited as the reason Halo is no longer released on PC. I doubt Age of Empires Definitive Edition will be out for very long before someone releases a patch unlocking the game for previous versions of Windows. Microsoft will undoubtedly be upset, but whether or not they have a right to be upset, that will most certainly not stop people from doing it.It’s kind of a bad business decision really. If you make it too hard for people to purchase it and get it running for an older OS… they’ll probably end up pirating it. I will never approve of piracy, but realistically, this is the sort of thing that will encourage it.
Dude, few companies are interested in older OS.

Irrelevant. Making it work for older OS’s would be pathetically simple. Simply remove the one or two lines of code that exist only to make it incompatible with older OS’s. Because that is what Microsoft has to do in order to make it incompatible with older OS’s. They have to actively sabotage backwards compatibility, because a PC is near infinitely forwards compatible, the only true break being something like the move from 32 bit OS’s to 64 bit.
This is exactly what happened with halo 2. Microsoft wrote in no more than three lines of code to actively prevent it from running on anything older than Vista. A fanpatch was released on day one, allowing the game to be run flawlessly on XP, windows 2000, 98, 95, the only limitation being hardware. And this was completely legal, Microsoft couldn’t do dip to stop people from doing it.
It doesn’t matter that few companies are interested in older OS’s, because there exists fans who are. And the way a PC works, the fans can easily release their own patches/mods that make it work on older OS’s no matter how hard the companies work to prevent that. If you release a game designed to function on a Windows OS, any OS, it is impossible to prevent people from releasing mods, patches, and straight up hacks to get it working on all other Windows OS’s, and to get it working flawlessly. It has happened before, and I guarantee you someone will release a fan compatibility patch on release day. If people can break Spore’s DMCA protection before it’s released, AoE doesn’t stand a chance. The only thing remaining is whether Microsoft will wisen up and drop the Window’s 10 only plan. I hope they will. It would be embarrassing if they made the same mistake twice.

Yes make win95 compatible with Total war series.
This ok for Linux, the companies are interested in charity.
What will next complain? Why aren’t free?
If they made the mistake , the world will be same.
My point is why you expected from them?
Is like Mac Donald, is like Coca Cola , is like Disney…
Are business. If you real want real games support indies or Linux or this kind companies.
Or simple Creative Commons media and open source.
Windows 95 is compatible with the Total War series. If someone were willing to take windows 95 and install it on a computer with the right specs, nothing will stop it from running. It will run. Obviously, windows 95 is ancient and no sane person would spend the money to do it. But you seem to have a horrifically poor understanding of how a PC works.
PCs are not consoles. Games do not have to be specifically coded to work on outdated PCs. Games do not have to be specifically coded to work on newer PCs. There are only two ways to completely prevent a game from running on an outdated OS. First, if the game only works on 64 bit systems, then they won’t work on 32 bit systems. 64 bit exclusive games are currently the exception, not the rule, but 32 bit systems will eventually lose all support. Your example, the Total War games, are made to work both on 64 bit and 32 bit systems. Which means they can and will work on windows 95, provided some madman installs it on a computer with good enough hardware.
The second method is what Microsoft did. They are going out of their way to actively sabotage compatibility. They are putting in extra effort specifically to ensure it cannot work on older OS’s. It would be less work on their part to make it work on older OS’s. This is the only possible reason they can claim with any certainty that it will not work on an older OS, because if they did not intentionally sabotage backwards compatibility, there would be exactly zero problems.
I’m on Windows 10 and it’s really not as bad as people make it out to be. 90% of the haters have never used it and only read about it. -.-
Not bothered, sucks for you all. lol

I think that it would be better to release on steam. There is a established community already that would improve the experience of the players.
Please no more forcing every game onto Steam, Steam is already too much of a monopoly.
here is one of the reply I put on thread “Will it ever be one Steam?”
User replied: “Put all DE games on steam. No one will use Windows store!”
My reply: “I will use MS store. I don’t know why people are so obsessed with Steam? It’s not like they are bathed in milk, and are just perfect. Did you see how many years it took just to get humans to answer your support ticket, refund, two factor security (whereas everyone uses google authenticator, they put their own app, so you wont complain on that??), to fix sale event pricing, greenlight, community market scam, trade scam, game key scam? I can go on and on. When they first came, they were just as bad as MS store or any other digital store. ■■■■ they are still broke and have server shutdowns and data breaches. If you buy game to showcase or just to show how big is your gaming library is, then you are wrong. Buy a game that is fun to play. AOEDE uses an Xbox live feature for multiplayer, which is more stable, therefore MS store. If they come in steam and use the Xbox login, you all will complain again. You guys will complain no matter because you guys are thoroughly brainwashed with GabeN tonic. Shame.”
If you want to read great discussion from both sides of people (which I shouldn’t say but the some people have formed a clan) go here: https://forums.ageofempires.com/discussion/47/will-it-be-available-on-steam#latest
Steam… where is Half life 3? We at last have AoE4. Lol.
Don’t trust at full in any company. Mostly turn evil, even steam.
Only on windows 10 means friends are not able to play with me.
Steam/GOG are great places to have it i know alot of other people who would love to play this but dont have win10. Plus i think your alienating half your interested player base by having it be on win10 store exclusively.

¿And exactly why? I’ve been playing Age of Empires since 1997, have all of them (collector editions included), and don’t think so. A true AoE fan will have any SO which supports all currently-existing Age of Empires. Imposing an OS in order to play a legendary remastered game like this one is a terrible idea.
I have both Windows 10 and Windows 7, so it’s not a problem for me, but that W10 requirement is only in order to push people to buy their newest OS. And I really think people justifying that unfair movement are only who already have Windows 10 and don’t care about other people, or people that only wants to flatter those Microsoft dudes, waiting for some kind of reward for it… and I don’t think flattering W10 requirement will mean a reward.
Lol, thats nonsense. Its disrespectful to say we are trying to flatter Microsoft.
Samsung and all other Phone companies dont even want to update your phone to the latest OS if it was released more than a year ago and it takes them 6 months to release it. Microsoft (just like Apple) is trying their best to satisfy their customers and they are supporting Personal Computers (PC’s) bought more than a year ago) even tho an average PC costs less than an Android Flagship.
If you think sticking to older Operating Systems is cool, then you might as well stick to Windows 95 or Windows XP.
The world is evolving. You will either evolve as well and stay on track with others or you will be left behind.
If a company is doing something good, its normal to expect from me that i am gonna praise them for it.

Except that they were giving the OS away. For free. For over a year. Anyone who isn’t on Windows 10 did so out of stubbornness, because Microsoft gave them every opportunity to get upgraded easily.
Yes

Man, ¿what are you talking about? I don’t like old OS because yes. I like Windows 7 because is still the best one in performance and compatibility with old programs and games, and it’s not only me: there are a lot of people with W7 because they like it more than W10 (and you can search for it: most people still use W7 today, even when upgrading to W10 was free for a while).
Btw, I’m not saying that everyone who is right with W10 requirement is flattering Microsoft, I say it only about people that says absurd things like ‘‘a true Age of Empires Fan will have Windows 10 Installed’’.

Most people still use W7 today. I’m not talking only about purchasing W10, it’s because most people prefer W7. And after over a year of free upgrade to W10 still most people is on W7, I think it’s a great proof of it. ¿Why can’t Microsoft let that people stay on their favorite OS? Yes, it can turn obsolete after a couple of years, but there is exactly where Microsoft can work on a ‘‘re-Windows 7’’ instead of making new OS with worse reception (and it’s a fact).

Would I have liked AoEDE to be available on every possible platform? Yes. Just for the good of the game.Am I ‘upset’ (or, disappointed) it is a Win10 exclusive? No. Why not?
First of all, no one is saying “I want to play on win8”. There seems to be a LOT of win7 users who have this elitist attitude about win7 just because 8 turned your PC into a giant iPhone, but fear not! Win10 is a very good OS.
Now, specifically to the win7 people:
So what should you win7 users do in this case? I think you need to set down your butter churns, lace up your boots and bonnets, jump in the family horse buggy and head on down to your local apothecary to fill your country doctor’s prescription for win10.Seriously guys, the new millenium is not as scary as it sounds.
It isn’t about elitist attitude about WIN 7, it is about MONEY because some of us don’t have enough gold mines to upgrade our OS. I have my own computer running WIN 7 but my brother got a new one (yeah, my parents bought it) with WIN 10 installed, so I am gonna use it to play the game.
Meanwhile I will just save my university earnings (if I had some) to get into the new OS.
Windows 10 was a free upgrade for 1 year.
If it would actually work. On both my PC’s it would download, then crash, then prevent the previous version of windows from updating.
Also going to say not upset but disappointed. Most of my friends are on steam and +90% of my game library is also managed in steam because it is great at what it does. Xbox Live, meh. However, I will still purchase the game and enjoy it because I am a hardcore fan and have been playing since the first installment was released. Some of my best memories are from AoE late night LAN’s competing vs other great players!
