If I am not mistaken, Relic is the only old RTS developer alive and blizzard every other RTS studio is gone, Microsoft did well chosing relic as I don’t see any other studio cable of doing age IV the problem is that Microsoft or relic themselves didn’t want to take any risk and they went the safe route.
please more humility, that the game outnumbers age 3, so if coh2 is short age 3 what is it?
Agreed, I think that is where the main problem is. They were trying to play it so safe that they made the game a little boring
Microsoft and Relic took plenty of risk by going with their own vision for Age of Empires and not listening well enough to the fans.
Both @AgeOfAwesomenes and @anon63664082 have a point.
In overall gameplay (somewhat similar to AoE2), civ design and civ choice (see my Time Analysis topic), MS / Relic played super safe. You could have radically novel, fresh, unique Inca, Mali or Ottoman Empire civs, but instead we get exact AoE2-copycat English and French…
But in the graphics and artistic style, in imposing firebrand militant feminism to medieval Mongols (even the Khan), in removing all aggression feel and blood, they took a massive risk in subverting the franchise tradition.
Yes and no. Listening to fans can be a blessing or a curse.
Microsoft did precisely that (risking making their own vision of an AoE title) with Age of Mythology. If they had listened to fans that would have never been done. On paper it sounds like a terrible idea, straying away from historic realism, going 3D, total asymmetry, god powers, etc.
So, such risk can work but if done right. There needs to be full commitment and also plenty of resources. If you water down your vision, if you doubt your choices, if you try to please virtually everyone, you’ll end up with a forgettable game.
After they had already made Age of Empires II.
This is an excuse. Start with the classic Age of Empires gameplay and build from there.
The thing that is unfortunate for me personally about AoEIV is the fact the shortcomings reside in the bones of the game itself which means they cannot easily be rectified by patches and DLC, especially in this case with the updates aren’t nearly as compelling as they need to be to give the playerbase confidence that some of these issues will be eventually fixed. It took this long just to add a color picker? really. Well, there goes any hope of adding more flora and fauna to the maps. No Man’s Sky is an anomaly. I feel mightily indifferent towards AoEIV and in some cases that is worse than outright disgust. The entirety of the game’s potential has tied itself to esports.
The design of the game itself is off the mark for me and I don’t see any way it can change that. Many of us are critical of the direction and design of the game because we hope there are people listening and taking notes.
I’m glad people are enjoying the game while others care enough about the franchise to want something better. We can all point fingers at who is at fault but the fact is we don’t know, and quite frankly it’s too late at this point. The only thing that matters now is they don’t repeat the same mistakes and actually listen to the fanbase. Relic isn’t your friend nor is Microsoft. My fear is because the game did sell well whoever is in charge doesn’t see the need to change things and all our concerns are ignored.
This was actually Ensemble Studios before Microsoft took over the IPs. I still have my AOM Collectors Edition set although I have since then lost my Minotaur in one of my home moves
. But yeah this is not surprising since MS World’s Edge knew from the start of the initial feedback from beta players that it wasn’t going to do so well. Now you see on the other hand Relic’s feedback from the pre-alpha test which I gave high marks for such a complete game (yes on a pre-alpha…) you can see the stark difference in confidence.
I’m not too sure unless we had verifiable numbers I’m beginning to suspect the Gamepass player base is a myth. Just look how many youtube and twitch channels are producing AOE IV content? Its almost on par with AOE III ![]()
