I really like this game and want to play it more, but I feel like even on easy the AI is way more aggressive in this installment than in 2 or 3 DE. Is there a way I can create a “noob” level AI that’ll act more like the easy AIs for 2 and 3?
The worst part about the AI isn’t the fact that it’s impossible to beat, it’s that it knows how to annoy you into quitting the game. It just sends units all over the map and attacks your base from all sides without giving a ■■■■ about anything.
Honestly, thats pretty much what I mean. Something I’ve noticed is that the Easiest AI in 2 rarely progresses past Castle age and the Easy AI in 3 rarely progresses past Commerce Age (age 2), yet the “Easy” AI in 1 often beats me to pretty much every age.
Also, 2’s Easiest AI hardly makes any military units at all, at most like a handful of spears just chilling in their base. 3’s AI will occasionally send handfuls of units to harrass a building or two but nothing like the actual armies 1’s Ai fields and just somehow endlessly pumps out.
I want a noob-friendly AI that maybe lags behind in ages or just doesn’t crank out dozens of dozens of units
This is because in AoE II on the easier levels with the time advance always waits for the player until he has completed it. Only from “medium” the AI begins to advance independently to the second. I don’t remember exactly, but I seem to recall that this was actually the case in AoE1. What I do remember, though, is that when I played the game not so long ago with a buddy who was playing it for the very first time, the enemies up to and including level “Medium” hardly attacked at all, if at all, and were really very slow. That’s why I’m a bit surprised by the problems other players are having there.
Many greetings.
I mean I’m also dookie at this game and have little idea what I’m doing which is why I’m having trouble. The AI is just so much more aggressive in this one than in 2 or 3. I just want to know how to edit the AI so it’s basically braindead lol
I don’t think it’s an issue with the AI, but some scenarios within the campaign only. Certain AIs are much more aggressive than others. Some are defensive, while others attack on sight, and some build armies while others just wait there untill you attack them.
If you’re having trouble with The Holy Man, that’s normal (the game has issues with this map regarding difficulty). If you somehow can’t defeat the Egyptian campaign, then maybe it’s just your lack of practice.
I think she means the normal random map in multiplayer.
She, and yeah. I’m talking about random matches, not campaigns.
Sorry, I’ve corrected it
An AI revision would be appreciated. I hope for an update so we can enjoy the game even more, so that depending on the difficulty we choose, AI behaves accordingly.
Cheers
Hopping in here like 5 months later just to say I did try editing the PER files but I don’t think it changed anything. It’s a real shame cause I love this era of history and would love to play this game more but as it stands I have basically no chance against on Easy.
The AI is easily worse than AoE2’s AI for sure on all levels. However, if there are folks who struggle with the easiest AI, then I 100% agree that there should be even easier options. In fact, I was personally surprised when the Easiest AI rushed me early feudal with a large military when I was testing a few things in the game (was testing sound levels and some build orders).
So yes, it seems like the easiest AI has not been developed properly, but I can tell you that the average ranked player will have no problems beating the Hardest AI. It seems like, across the board, they’ve missed the mark.
Yeah, I won’t say the AI’s good, just that it’s aggressive. I wish I had more time to develop my Eco and actually figure out my strategy and not spend the entire game defending against endless rushes.
Yeah you might be right on this one - worse overall, but more rush-y.
Looking at the PER files, “Passive” looks like what I’m looking for, but IDK how to force the AI to use it in a match.
ed: wrong thread. Sorry!
Update the 2nd: found a mod that does most of what I’m looking for. It’s the RM Brawl mod, and (intentionally or not) it makes the AI far less aggressive, often only attacking after it’s been attacked. They still tend to have a lot of units but at least they don’t perpetually send them after me.
There is already a pre-made stance for this called passive-aggressive and can be found via the editor.
