Experimental test solution for people who crash on launch, please read carefully

Disclaimer:
This is an experiment to see whether there is a correlation for the following issue. Read this carefully and answer then follow the steps. This is not a tutorial or confirmed solution. I am collecting data to help the developers with useful feedback and data.

Follow these steps

  1. First, boot AoE:DE. It should crash after the logo.

  2. Open Event Viewer from start menu. (You can find this typing Event and should show the program).

  3. Open it up and go to Windows Logs -> System

  4. Do the following to filter for errors and critical

  5. Now look at the errors. It should say something like (actual path like installation folder might vary, but it should be a DCOM error:

STOP! If you don’t have the above error then stop reading. This experiment will not help you. If you do see the same log then read on.

As an experiment. We’re going to try the “download a free game and then cancel it” trick which was in one of the threads.

  1. Reboot your computer
  2. Open Microsoft Store
  3. Download any free game. When download starts, wait 5-10 seconds and then pause + cancel it.
  4. Boot AoE:DE

Done? Now answer me simply if this worked Yes or No.

If OP’s solution works, disregard this. Another way to fix this crash-on-startup is to download any app on the microsoft store, pause it at any point, and then attempt to start AoE: DE again. This has worked for me every time.

When my game cannot start as if the log @Helepolis shown, I just download some free items (no matter you already owned or not) on Microsoft Store, wait for its download progress start, then pause and cancel. Open the game, hearing the main theme of the game!

Checked and i had the same error.
Did every step and AOE:DE now works. (the game i downloaded was “slot of Vegas - Real Vegas Casino Slot Machine”)

I had this problem yesterday and i fixed it by launching Minecraft for the first time. Relaunching Minecraft
today didn’t work.

Mine was working fine since I bought the game, played for a while, all good. Yesterday the crash on launch started. Fixed it by uninstalling and downloading all over again. Weird but, hey at least it works now. Hope it helps others!

I had the same problem as Nymph137. I downloaded the game on 20th, played a few hours, even on the latest build 5101. It stopped working and started crashing to the desktop immediately yesterday on 22nd. I just did the test you proposed and indeed in the event logger there was the DCOM-error that you mentioned in your description. With aborting a download from any game in the Microsoft store, Age of Empires Definitive Edition now launched again flawlessly.
If the dev’s need any more help from me, I am happy to assist with Dxdiag logs or stuff.

Good luck everyone, see you on the battlefield! Wololo

For anyone still having issues launching or crashing after following the steps on the support page ( https://www.ageofempires.com/support ), we want to hear from you! Please report your issue using the steps found at: https://www.ageofempires.com/support#report

We are working hard to diagnose the underlying issues. Thank you to everyone who has posted additional information and/or workarounds in the meantime!

Thanks for the replies so far. I am really hoping for more data so please if you have the DCOM error, follow the steps and post your result.

I followed your DCOM error process and found that I am getting DCOM errors during the game install but rather Application errors during the game launch and subsequent crash.

I have not seen this issue posted anywhere. Anyone have any ideas?
I get this dialogue box when I try and start the game:
“We know you really want to get started, but you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Check the store for the launch date.”
Its 2/24/18…
I have tried everything on the official support post the Dev’s setup.

Did you happen to pre-order the title when the previous launch date was 12/31/18?

@CheeseOnToast
My Microsoft Account tracks my purchases as follows:

11/12/2017
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition - Closed Beta
Completed
$0.00

15/11/2017
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition
Completed
$0.00

I don’t recall when the launch date changed. I received the preorder code in November because I was lucky enough to win wololo Wednesday.

Note sure If I replied correctly, see my response above.

Agreed that the workaround works for people experiencing the crash at the splash screen with DCOM 317 error in their system event log. Additionally I can confirm that if you add your MS account as separate user on your computer and sign in using that account and verify it, then download the game through MS store, the problem doesn’t happen at all. So this issue is probably affecting local and domain user accounts only. If I want to play I just have to switch to my MS account. Not ideal though.

Hello!

The game crashes after intro movie, i can see the menu, music starts then stops after half a second, the game crashes to desktop without error message

My error log in event viewer states twinapi.appcore.dll as the faulty module.

Tried suggested fixes, nothing worked so far.

It seems to be people are not reading the opening post carefully. This thread focuses on one specific crash scenario.

So I’ll repeat it again here: This thread is about the crash upon launch with the DCOM event log. Any other crashes or moments of crashing or event logs other than the DCOM, should not be posted or discussed here. There are other threads for them.

Hello friend, thank you very much for your advice if it served me…

i found the DCOM issue, but event ID is 10010, i also downloaded one new free game call: Candy Crush Soda Saga, you know what? This game crash also…same situation of AoE:DE.

The opening post does say “STOP! If you don’t have the above error then stop reading.” Since you don’t have the exact error, what did you expect?

downloading something from the store triggers your account to on status and allows me to get into the game, no reboot, no redownloading of the whole game
