Future of AOE

Imagine a villager picking berries near an interstellar base.

Initially Aoe was supposed to be some futurestic world rts game. the photon man unit in both aoe and aoe2 are a remainder of that initial idea.

Of course not. 20 characters

On ‘Age of Kings’ engine they’ve achieved 4-dimensional warfare- air/space- ground - sea - underwater.

I can imagine futuristic mods for AoE III in an alternative universe where that game got robust mod tools and an improved map editor. People’ve been doing that with RTS games in all time periods- from Total War games to Men of War.
AoE II and III got some sweet mods full of new content, but this series was more about custom scenarios and RM scripts than actual, proper, big modding- just like a vast majority of other RTS classics.

The image from AoE1 to AoE5 of Ensemble? I saw that one, but I think it was just a banner at their office, no?

It was a picture from an art book. From collector’s edition of AoE III.
I have mine but deep inside the storage with game boxes, here’s a pic from reddit:
AoE III artbook teaser

It was more a fun little thing, an artistic vision of what MIGHT become of the series, than any real announcement.

While futuristic AoE would be cool… we had a lot of those. And AoEs are known for being grounded and based in history. It’s like Civilizaiton competitors that are based in fictional world- they are good, but there’s something missing.
I’d rather have new CnC with mechs and robots than Age of Empires. Unless they hire great historians and artists and craft history of potential Earth empires from the future.

Ah, I guess I even got that wrong too… 11 But yeah, I never took that image seriously when I saw it many years ago…

Aoe 3 did go out of the historical ways with its original scenario.

No it did not. It was always a history based game.

Finding the fountain of youth is historical?

Small detail. As I said, franchise is history based.

The official scenario is a small detail? ok then.

For the base game, of course, the rest of the game is ok. And campaigns got better with expansions, still they were a letdown when it comes to their number and length.
I guess crafting these maps, voice acting, working 3d vs 2d took a toll and they were not able to produce as much as they were able in AoE2. It’s unfortunate for sure.

I also feel aoe3 would have been a better platform for a space or future based game rather than the aoe2 isometric view.its kinda odd when most of the units are archers.

Oh, I’m separating AoE from AoM, since I totally think we are already getting something AoM-related next year for its 20th anniversary (at least an announcement). A Definitive Edition with some extra pantheon/culture, most probably, but who knows.

Once, together with @GusTank04, I wrote a topic about a potential new AoE sub-brand - Age of Wars (AoW). The link is given below:

Give me any of that and I bet it would be the biggest highlight of 2022! maybe as big as AOE II DE!

AoM is a good single player game but was never even close to the level of aoe2 or 3.

If they ever do a AoE5 next then I hope it will be ancient timeline. I would love to play as the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans etc. So much rich history to tell and I think AOE1 deserves a new title with this timeline.
