Game is a desaster, admit it please

We have lots of SC2 players and players from AoEO/AoM/AoE3 on that list. It’s like the Olympics. I love it.

Guys, I think most of SC2 playesr (including myself) who interested in AoE4 are just looking for changes. SC2 gameplay is very stressful(in a bad way), you can easily loose your whole army in 1 sec. On high level SC2 doesnt forgive even little mistakes. AoE4 is different in a good way and thats what I like about it. But I’ve only seen streams(from sc2 streamers, experimenting with AoE4), never played it myself. How do you think will there be more beta, or we have to wait until release to play?

Im not sure if there will be another beta. Maybe one last one to check general balance of the game.
But we are only 4 weeks away from launch.

That was exactly the reason why I stopped playing SC2, I felt like a knife fight when I was looking more for a boxing match (although I still think SC2 is a really awesome game). About the final question I don’t think we will have any more Beta, unfortunately. But it’s just a guess.

Man, I sure love it when some random guy asks me to admit that his opinion is objectively correct and that I should share it.
There’s no way I could form my own opinion, so it really comes in handy!

A different way to Development

.Company of Heroes 3 dev amps up how much the community's shaped the game | PC Gamer

I Hope to see something similar for the next (i Hope) Aoe.

Yes, that’s right, people from StarCraft 2 are so interested in AoE 4 because it’s hard for them to play the game that the developers abandoned, and the patches have to wait a whole year, and they are looking for another modern RTS that the developer will support, this is a potentially huge base players.

It will definitely be exciting to see who will come out on top in this RTS crossover. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I think it has more to do with the fact that sc2 is dead, rather than Aoe4 being a huge competitive hit.

Your counter arguments are a generic game with unremarkable reception and a game that hasn’t been released yet. Devs can tell everyone how the opinion of the community is of high value and then completely disregard it. And you won’t notice the difference because devs will tell ‘based on your feedback’ in the next blog post.
The problem isn’t necessarily that players are too dumb. The issue is that for every intelligent player that can provide useful feedback there are dozens of loud mentally impaired kids who vomit all over the forum with their worthless fantasies. Look at suggestions for aoe 2. Add a feature that doesn’t fit. Buff the civ I like. Make this one very specific useless thing more realistic. The time spent sorting this brain waste can be spent designing the game.
Of course, in some areas player feedback is productive indeed. Things like interface, performance, bugs, i.e. technicalities.

They wouldn’t pick up a 60$ game to replace their free game.
The difference here is also that they’ve tried it and LIKE it.
Otherwise they could have just gone on to play aoe 2 or something.

We don’t know for sure yet. As a former sc2 player myself, i don’t think aoe4 will fill in the gap.

I’ve played SC2 on and off since it came out in 2010 and until 2019. I started in Bronze, fell in love with the game (didn’t know better at the time), and ended in Diamond playing Terran. To be any higher than that you need to play often and keep your dexterity fresh, unless you play Protoss ofc (just kidding).

There are dozens of pros who do Bronze to Grandmasters series with ridiculous constraints, like never attacking, or only using a certain unit. In a game that rewards strategy that shouldn’t be possible. But Starcraft rewards dexterity and speed first and foremost, and only then everything else, if even.

Strategy is mostly knowing all the dangerous builds (and there are many) and timings, that are all extremely easy to pull off and hard to hold, so it’s much more an experience thing than a decision making thing. It’s more about improving your strategy between games, and in a reactionary manner. There is some decision making once you get decent at keeping up with the game, but the speed of gameplay is so high that these decisions are split second and quite shallow. It mostly comes down to “get more resources while killing more bases” in the end game, and delete as many workers from your opponent with the huge array of harassing units throughout the game. There are some timing attacks that are very strong, but not much room for creativity.

SC2’s strongest suit is its never-before-seen fluidness and responsiveness and amazingly detailed graphics in 2010. It’s always had huge balance issues at top level throught its history, with very long stretches of time where nothing was being addressed. It’s always been extremely punishing to play. And in my humble view, it’s gotten more and more micro focused with every new expansion.

Im a long time aoe2 player, the type that didn’t like aoe3. I played the stress test quite a bit and won every game including the ones where my teammates quit. Where this games fails has been repeated many times even in this thread, it legit looks like a game they could have easily achieved in 2011, if not better. Especially if Microsoft Games(all hail king of the kings) was still in the works, xbox game studios(all hail king of the losers) just ain’t cutting it… Ya’ll need to hear this xbox game slackin studios, you keep profiting off legendary creations of actual developers that cared about their work. I hated you when you messed up the balance with paid civs in aoe2 for your own profit and I still don’t like you so far for failing this game in 20 freaking 21. All this attantion isnt because you created something amazing, it is because Microsoft Games created something amazing in the 90s for you to take advantage of today.

AoE4 is shaping up to be a decent RTS, far from a disaster; however, I definitely think there’s a lack of polish that I would have expected to see from a genre defining series. I’m aware that the visuals have been talked about to death by this point (and talked to death about if they’re important or not), but I feel like there’s nothing awe inspiring about them. They are very middle of the road, and that’s where the disappointment stems for me.

I’m certain that all the artists at Relic wanted to make something stunning, but I’m guessing there were limitations set in place that prevented them from doing so, probably relating to optimization for lower end hardware. But why not add visual options for people who have PC’s capable of handling great quality models/textures/shadows/lighting? Why not have ragdoll physics for units? Why not have a day/night cycle that can be toggled off or on depending on the user’s preference? Why not have manned siege/artillery? Etc, etc. Perhaps this would have taken away too much focus from gameplay, but I think for a huge release (in my eyes) it would’ve been worth the extra production time to nail this down, and have the visuals be more than something to be thought of as “good enough,” or “passable.” I believe attention to small details matter even if they wouldn’t go fully appreciated. Perhaps, I just had sky-high expectations as AoE2 was the first PC game I ever played, and I wanted that same “wow factor” I got in 2000. I will say the job on the audio was great (maybe a little too chatter’y at the moment).

The game is fun, but I love RTS, so I was probably going to find it fun no matter what. I can’t help but feel disappointed thinking about what AoE4 could have been and what it could have meant for the RTS genre. I know that Microsoft and Relic are more than capable of making something incredible, but I believe rigid deadlines won out over making something that would stand the test of time.

Very good post. Totally agree with you. AOE4 Is not the next logical Evolution of this franchise but It could be a good Rts, imho.

Exactly, I remember that wow factor I got in 1999 when first playing AoE2, and then a few years later with AoM, and then a few years later with CoH1.
There is absolutely no wow factor for AoE4, I have to force myself to like it actually.

The game should be released by this year as a finished product (though when windows 10 was released it was never a finished product), they later provide patch updates for improvements laid down by the AoE community, as AoE like other possible rts games do have a update option in the game menu.

Agree, that’s the problem you don’t get the excitement over playing aoe 4. Maybe that’s because I’m not a kid anymore but still

Because you have grown up and games no longer impress you as they did in childhood.
I agree, this feeling haunts many people.
The “wow effect” in childhood depends on many factors, what was your mood at the time of acquaintance with the game, what was the situation around you, and so on, and you remember this warm ordinary feeling from your childhood, unfortunately I have to upset you, not a single one the game will not be able to repeat this feeling, because you are not specifically in that situation, at that age and in that position when you liked the old game a long time ago. Unfortunately, childhood cannot be returned by any means.
