How could AOE4 look like in Unreal Engine?

I asked Gemini to create a image of a potenti al AOE4 in Unreal Engine. The final result impressed me and It makes me think that Unreal could be a very good choice for the future of the serie.

now ask it how badly it’d run, also dare i say this would be straining your eyes to see units to be completely mild about it

also further warning on UE5, look how poor stormgate’s performance was in relation to how it looks, i don’t think i even want to know how poorly above example would run

to be clear, i have 0 doubt WE is working on a custom RTS backend within UE5 framework (the job listing for an engineer with UE5 and RTS experience says it all), but make no mistake, a game made with it will not look like this unless you abuse DLSS etc. to extreme, which in all honesty i refuse to do as it already caused irrepairable damage to the industry and the hardware market, and even if it looked exactly like that screenshot, it’d be impossible to tell what’s what, amplified further with all garbage upscaling and frame gen mass abuse, it’d be a blurry, smeary, noisy, horribly performing mess, needing a 5090 for sub 60 fps with upscaled 4K, not even true 4K

Yes, it reminds me a bit of Ancestors Legacy, which was made in Unreal 4…

Looks awesome. I’m loving the gore and blood too. Fitting for war. I hate how companies keep PG rating all the horror and war stuff with games and movies as if to let kids see them (looking at you Aliens vs Predator), or making the acting silly just because it is a video game. Not every game has to be a silly cartoon. Keep the mature stuff mature. While I’m ranting, I’ll go ahead and add my feedback for the new art style they opted for, I’m not a fan. I preferred the more historical approach the game use to have. I guess they changed it because some people complained. Well I’m complaining about the new cartoon approach. Maybe cater to who has the most hours in the game instead of some random voice on the internet. Keep in mind they may just leave their game running now to compensate for that to try to use the mimicry card.

Sure, but with the demands of graphics, we’ll see a ladder like this, but it doesn’t matter, the graphics look very nice, right?

The niche game that plays in high resolution, Total War, doesn’t manage resources or produce villagers!

stormgate doesn’t even look that great, but it sure runs like crap

Tempest rising looks incredible and runs perfectly. I don’t see the problem.

Stormgate Is looking bad: too much stylized and built to suppor 1vs1 matches. It would has been a failure since the beginning.

Dawn of War 4 looks stunning and every videos is showing Better performance and incredibile graphic.

We are on higher level of graphic complexity in comparison to AOE4: “sync-kill system”, 4k models, meches, great effects, physics and more

its rarely a problem with the idea, its always the execution that worries me, and execution with all UE5 titles not just RTS has been weak at best

Yes, I have faith in DoW 4 because it’s made by the Iron Harvest devs, and because it feels like DoW 1 with better graphics or a DoW 3 but well made and with more factions besides Space Marines and Orks… you have the Necrons and the Adeptus Mechanicus (I think the Eldars too, or they’ll come in future DLCs, I also hope to see Tyranids at least as an enemy faction in Space Marine and Mechanicus campaigns, having to play with few units at first in order to then build and defend a base to overwhelm them with all the firepower of Titans and Dreadnoughts)…

Well, there are already several comments saying that it looks a bit cartoonish or like a mobile game because of the animations.

I made an aoe4 landmark in UE5 some time ago. Mansa quarry and KT fortress, it’s possible but needs to be way more optimized for a game.

the trick to making smt somewhat optimized in unreal is to not trust epic’s advice on the subject and not leave the engine on default presets, as for gameplay, i want to see how anyone works around unreal’s inherent singlethreadedness which would otherwise cause cpu requirement to be completely stupid

I asked for an RTS game, not a real-life simulator…

I asked the moon spirits for an image of AoE IV in Unreal and it gave me a segmentation fault.

Seriously though, this is completely made-up. It isn’t real. It isn’t based on anything. It doesn’t say anything about how any Age game would look in any Unreal engine.

Beatiful creation. Would It possible to you create some AOE4 unita in Unreal Engine 5?

Tempest rising done It, so It could be possible.

Of course, for this reason i said in the title “how could It look like”.

Everything is possible, but game development is a complicated topic :joy: I don’t have time to do more of these, it takes quite a lot of time and effort
