I am sorry but this game sucks... I am returning to aoe2

Yes, indeed this game is terrible. Released years later with great graphics and voice acting, AOE4 is unfortunately a disappointment. When you look at it today, even the streams of the world’s best players are watched by only 300–400 people. Not only that, even high-prize tournaments fail to get more than 500 viewers. What makes a game a game is not its graphics, but its gameplay. Playing this game has become almost impossible due to certain issues, such as the unique traits possessed by only a few civilizations, the unevenly distributed military unit variety, civilizations that can build keeps as early as the 2nd Age (not just in 2, but in every age), the ability to produce Men-at-Arms in the very first and second ages while being able to counter the military combinations of all other civilizations, and the untouchable horse archers of the Mongols. This is a game of guys who pull off a Man-at-Arms rush in the 1st Age, or show up at your base in the 7–8 minute mark before you’ve even managed to gather 10 military units, drop the White Tower right next to your Town Center, and spam rams—or people who pick Romans and try a Burgrave rush.

It’s not just casual players anymore; this disgrace has reached the pro level. Even in tournaments right in front of viewers, we see players acting like children by going to their opponent’s base, building a few walls, supporting them with a tower, and leaving the opponent helpless.

The reason AOE2 is so beloved is that in the 2nd Age, all civilizations have the same type of units, they can’t throw up ridiculous keeps right in the 2nd minute, and fairness is at a very acceptable level. Say what you will… there is no such thing as professionalism in a game where you can reach the Conqueror rank by doing a Burgrave rush. If the player executing this follows all the steps correctly, it is a completely unpreventable tactic.

The developers of this game care so much about realism. Every civilization’s language changes and modernizes as they age up, etc., etc. Since you cared about realism so much, why do you deprive almost all civilizations of the “sword”—a weapon they’ve had since the Iron Age—as if they never invented it? Please don’t lecture me with tactics like “just go fast castle and spam crossbows.” Excuse me, but the value you get from a swordsman is 10 times higher than the value you get from a crossbowman. You need almost a minimum of 5 crossbowmen to kill a single swordsman, not to mention the world of APM and kiting required on top of that. If you can produce units 400% faster from a ridiculous landmark like the Burgrave Palace, then this game loses its meaning. And don’t come at me with things like having to chase down Mongol horse archers that move faster than (correct me if I’m wrong) all other cavalry units in the game.

Lancaster—yes, their units are supposedly weak, but in the current meta, there is not a single civilization that can handle a 2-TC Lancaster. You are forced to watch the opponent comfortably hang out in your base with a combination of a Lancaster castle + White Tower between 2 TCs. This is unfair.

If you like playing Delhi, you also have to wait 5 days for an upgrade. Meanwhile, look at Tughlaq, where upgrades happen instantly for a fee. In short, Microsoft should immediately fire whoever brought the ability to build keeps and their derivatives in the 2nd Age to this game. They did such a terrible job that shortly after the game was released, the entire player base went back to AOE2.

I am not a professional. I can say that I’ve climbed up to Diamond I. I never resorted to such cheese tactics to reach these ranks. But I am tired of going fast castle or getting holed up in my base all day against people who use these tactics. Honestly, I’m sure the player count will drop significantly soon. I protest the ability to dominate the game by giving Christian civilizations extreme advantages. Giving all civilizations that once ruled the world equal units up to the 3rd Age would have made this game much more playable.

Many players have quit this game simply because of the absurd cavalry of the Franks. Unnecessary. Unstoppable? It can be stopped. But it is absurd for a guy with an IQ of 35 to start with an advantage against someone playing their heart out. If there is a civilization that forces you to produce a specific unit, your opponent is in control. The Guild Hall landmark, for instance. Waiting 5 minutes and pocketing 1k food all at once is genuinely bizarre. While these can somehow be overcome, as long as there are civilizations in this game that can’t produce Men-at-Arms and build keeps in the 2nd and 3rd Ages, the player count will continue to shrink. Considering the wood and stone I need to gather for a 2nd TC, and the villagers required to harvest those resources, having a civilization that can build a TC as a landmark is also a turn-off. Fairness is very important. No one will tolerate certain civilizations being favored this much. Shame on you if you made people wait years for this just to play a new game like this.

I’m sure many players have complained about these issues and abandoned this game. Excuse me, but if you can reach Conq 3 with cheese tactics learned from a few YouTube videos, there is no point in being here. It’s nothing more than a waste of money. There is nothing to recommend about it.

As for those who say, “These tactics have solutions”—just because a solution exists doesn’t mean it can always be pulled off. I guarantee that in any match between two players of equal Elo, these can easily be executed. These absurdities have now moved out of casual matches and into high-prize tournaments. I am finally quitting this game, which gets worse with every new civilization added. Hello again, AOE2.

Mongols used to be able to build their own Town Center right next to the opponent’s and basically suffocate them from the very beginning. Thankfully, that was eventually fixed. Other than that, I think you’re absolutely right about most of what you said.

Honestly, I find it hard to believe that a team that supposedly cares about historical accuracy would introduce something like the Order of the Dragon as a variant. Especially when there are still countless bugs, balance issues, and other things that actually need attention.

But hey, priorities, I guess.

Instead, the developers decided that the Ottoman Sipahi was apparently causing some serious balance issues, so they increased its production time from 30 seconds to 31 seconds.

I’m really curious what kind of revolutionary balance improvement that extra 1 second achieved. Did it finally save the game? Did the meta collapse? Did thousands of players suddenly discover a new counter?

We may never know.

Jokes aside, it’s honestly pretty funny watching the devs spend their time fixing things like this when there are much bigger problems in the game that have been waiting for attention for ages. :joy:

Easy fix prevent you from building to close to first town center. We have always had that in age 3 to prevent outpost rushes or the like. It would make sense for aoe 4 as well if that is your biggest complaint.

AoE2 will always be there to comfort us all

I’m hoping Microsoft does what they did with Diablo, where they announced Diablo 5 is coming in 2029, and just move on from AoE4 and go to AoE5

I don’t think they are leaving D4 in the dust, I bet they continue developing it for a while, but it’s nice D5 is something that Diablo players can look forward to on the horizon as using a different approach than they did with D4. With an AoE5, one would hope a different approach taken than with AoE4

hahaha totally agree bro… they do small changes in order to trick players about that they “balanced” the game… maybe they should reduce production speed of burgrave landmarks production speed from %400 to %399… I realy wonder what made them stop on %400… who proposed it to be %400 why not %500 for example

my fav civ is golden horde and I usually wait like 2 weeks to age up castle…

Homogenisation of design is something you can prefer, or not. But that doesn’t make your appraisal of it objective.

Best of luck!

Yeah, exactly… it’s not that hard…

Yeah, I don’t really expect AoE 5 until sometime after 2030… though they could easily announce it in 2027 with a planned 2031 release (set in the Ancient, Colonial, or Modern era—who knows?)…:man_shrugging:

Yes, Age of Empires II is far more fun than Age of Empires IV. In Age of Empires II, you can have all sorts of incredibly powerful tactics and a really great gameplay experience.

But in Age of Empires IV, you’ll find the game very easily makes you furious, irritable, and bored. And crucially, it doesn’t even give you a good experience.

I only recently realized this.

In Age of Empires II, no matter which civilization you use, you can build a beautiful base, with the goal of keeping your villagers very safe. In Age of Empires IV, all of that is gone. Age of Empires IV is like Red Alert 3, but without Red Alert 3’s sci-fi powerful units and unit abilities. Players feel like they’re using very low-level and stupid units to do mutual sneak attacks, just like in Red Alert 3.

He is right specially Tughlaq is untouchable and man at arms have no counter at early ages i said this when the game released also top on that civs like french has tremandous advantage against slow civs with their early knights.

He is right about burgrave too if it was a normal civ it can be bearable but HRE gather rate is too much from the begining they gather like beyond imperial level tech they age up so quick. This problem can be overcomed if the devs listened me and added a anti heavy inf unit OR giving man at arms or a version of man at arms to every civ.

Also he didnt write but china and zhu xi economy are broken too.Reason for that is devs gave them 2 landmarks and to build those landmarks fast they need a strong eco.

And no you dont have tactics, you have tactic just one thing you can do because game forces you to do.I write those things from the start these needs to be fixed.

Also i agree why doesnt every civ has a swordman from the begining?

Very nice post.By the way everything he writes can be countered but problem is you have only one option and you have no where to go.

Let’s be honest, AoE2 is still widely played because of nostalgia and because some players struggle to adapt to new things.

I’ve played every game in the franchise, and each one has its own advantages, disadvantages, and unique features.

In AoE3, many AoE2 players complained about the Home City feature because they had to build their own decks and didn’t know how to do it. Because of that, the game was often dismissed as trash.

The same story goes for AoE4, which follows the model of a more modern RTS: new units from earlier ages, different strategies, different ways to win, and so on. That was the whole point. Did you want a clone of AoE2?

If your preferred type of game is base building with mostly the same units but different costs and stats all the way until the Imperial Age, with unique units mainly appearing there, then AoE2 should probably remain your main game.

I’d bet that most AoE2 devs would prefer to move on to other Age titles so they could work with more modern tools rather than staying on a 2D game like AoE2, but because it has the largest player base and whales constantly demanding new content, they’re forced to keep it active.

exactly as you mentioned. better graphics of aoe2 and same game mechanics would sky rocket this game. one does not simply give men at arms to certain civs and not to others. if you want to be honest, be honest on this topic. we just want fairness. there is no point of playing civs such as golden horde in high elo because of long aging up time which is killing the civ. because even though you try, there is no “fast castle” strategy with golden horde while your oppenet ages up with 15 villager. be honest on these cases.

The company seems to be trying to cater to whichever country has the largest player base. Take Zhu Xi, for example. It has an absolutely ridiculous number of advantages, and there’s practically no civilization that can stand against it. Yet they haven’t even bothered to release a minor balance patch to address it for almost five months.

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to give the Chinese civilizations cannons in the Feudal Age next.

 I wouldn’t surprise either

Interested to see similar discussion posts about returning to AoE IV when future titles release.

Same mechanics as AoE2 would kill this game… because we already have AoE2.

I’d suggest the thread creator avoid using titles like that (like “going back to X game”) and change the Title of the thread, because it might look like a call for a boycott, whereas the actual point of the thread is to criticize Burgrave.

Is a suggeestion. I mention this because the last time I saw a thread with a name like in the Steam discussions (i go back to AoE3), it got deleted.

No, in High Elo AoE2, is a competence of who make the worst and most ruinous Ghetto of Mad Max, using houses or other buildings as barricades.

Thats because the 2D physics of the game: Taking advantage of an exploit where buildings lack walkable edges or streets, and—due to certain university technologies—are constructed far more rapidly than they are destroyed.

There are even mods that make the game look “uglier” (Small Trees, Neutral Terrain Mod, Signals Mod) to give you an advantage by exploiting the game’s 2D limitations.

That said, you can find nice eye candy in custom campaigns and scenarios, but in competitive play, not.

Do I need to point out that, a few years ago, the AoE2 Men-at-Arms line was easily taken out by Archers because it lacked significant ranged armor?

Before the Definitive Edition (DE), 99% of pro matches followed the same pattern:

  • Mass Archers (30-40) in feudal (II), and the winner was whoever built the first Mangonel and had the better micro to dodge incoming shots. No unique units, no more strategias, only Archer Rush. Very boring when you see the same game 30 times every tournament.

It was only recently—a few years back—that changes were introduced to the AoE2 Men-at-Arms to make them resistant to Archers and actually viable; ironically, this made them resemble the AoE4 version.

And don’t even get me started on the AoE2 Scout; it used to be useless, but now it fills the same role as the AoE4 Horseman by acting as an Archer counter.

In fact, many current AoE2 mechanics are copied from AoE4. Why? Because, let’s face it: AoE4’s mechanics offer better competitive balance than the original AoE2 ones.

About Men-at-arm feudal to all civs idea

I feel like it would upset the balance between Horsemen, Archers, and Spearmen. What could be done instead is to ensure every civ has a countermeasure to deal with early Men-at-Arms.

In 1vs1 The Golden Horde has his struggles, but in team games (3vs3, 4vs4), they are quite useful and versatile. If you let them boom, their economy becomes unstoppable, and the Kipchak horse archer combo is pretty OP.

Of course, AoE2 has its top-tier civs too, while others are at rock bottom (F-Tier).

Oh, Is impossible to win in 1vs1 with Britons in AoE2, so i gonna back to AoE4, jejjeje

People are hyped about the new DLC, and since there’s no recent news on it (presumably because World’s Edge is busy promoting the other two franchise titles coming out sooner), well, we have to talk about something else.

Previously, everyone knew that Sengoku Daimyo was extremely strong and that a nerf was definitely coming. Because of that, everyone was playing Sengoku. And just as we expected, it received a massive nerf.

Now we are in exactly the same situation with Zhu Xi. Everyone knows that a nerf is coming, and that’s why everyone is busy playing Zhu Xi. It’s obvious that the game is currently in an unfair state, so why is no one saying anything about it? Why are we expected to play in such an unfair environment for months?

Do you have any thoughts on this?

You literally agree man at arms upset the balance but sugesting it shouldn be available to all civs.I think you shouldnt make comments on this topic.By the way aoe 2 man at arms isnt resistant to archers that degree.

The op is right from burgrave man at arms to the french knights. To the english castle landmark or lancester age 1 castle landmark to your face. These things give so much advantage to those civs yes they can be defeated but you need to be better than your opponent.

Well about Sengoku, was my main in last seasons and i like the civ a Lot for it’s mechanics. But yeah, they super-nerfed them, so now it’s unnusable in 1vs1.

About ZhuXi, Being honest, since it’s release, they we’re a Pay-to-Win Civ:

  • Early Men-at-arm (ii), Zhugenu unlocked without dinasty.
  • Dynasty units with unique technologies AND sinergy with Landmarcks bonuses (Sun Temple, 10000 bolts, Ming Attacks bonus)
  • Fast Castle thanks to building bonus + Tang Dynasty bonuses.
  • Originally it’s 2 feudal landmarcks we’re ultra OP. They we’re nerfed and now reworked.

Most of the Pro considered ZhuXi S Tier civ.

The problem and the reason this civ Is hard to balance Is that Is one of the 4 first variants. Those which share 90% of the tech tree and 100% unique units AND unique techo… So, every Nerf to ZhuXi Is a China Nerf.

I Will say More but latter, nos I’m busy.
