the popular request hasn’t been ignored. the mods and devs know you’re interested in it.
there is this thing called the Elephant Archer, it gives you the elephant representation your civ is supposed to have.

Battle Elephants for the Indians

We are only fans of the game, so it is not completely out of the question that the devs will give Indians a variation of battle elephant at some point. However, I agree with the general sentiment here that Age of Empires is about gameplay over historical accuracy more often than not and it is meant to interest the player in learning more about each historical civilization. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a game, after all, not a historical simulation.
