We’ve received reports of translation issues across a number of languages in The Sultans Ascend expansion. The team is aware and looking into this further and intend to make corrections in the future.
If you’ve noticed a specific mistranslation please leave a comment here with a description of the mistranslated text and if possible a screenshot showing the text in question.
Is the Wynguard Ranger 's translation right? Official translation is “温嘉德游骑兵”, but “游骑兵” is sound like a cavalry, maybe is should be translated to “温嘉德长弓兵”(literally of “Wynguard longbowman”)
There are several critical issues. “日语” in Chinese refers to Japanese language, yet in the game it represents the civ. That’s a grave mistake which would only be made by machine translation. Meanwhile,
the entire description, including Byzantine or other new civs, seems rough and unpolished. We need professional, artificial localization to fix these problems.
And the ‘太阳神庙’, which in Chinese usually refers to famous buildings in the Inca. It is too strange to use it in the context of Chinese culture. Chinese people refer to buildings that worship the sun as the ‘日坛’.
The team responsible for AOE4 Chinese localization does not play this game at all, lacks the most basic historical knowledge, and more importantly, they hardly understand Chinese. Shouldn’t this kind of work at least be entrusted to real Chinese people?
Fire lance - Wikipedia “火枪” is the most proper translation for “fire lance”. However, “火枪” is also a generic name to guns, which will make people confused. So using “梨花枪” is better.
Devs should give localization team more information if those terms used in game have any historical reference.
The abilities in temple of the sun:Divine Haste can change into “As fast as the wind”(其疾如风).Divine Defense can change into “as quiet as the forest”(其徐如林).Divine Charge can change into “as daring as fire”(侵略如火).Divine Vitality can change into “immovable as the mountain”(不动如山).(by 《the art of war》)
Here is the original in《the art of war》by sunzi:Let your rapidity be that of the wind, your compactness that of the forest. In raiding and plundering be like fire, in immovability [in a position from which an enemy would dislodge you] like a mountain.
Believe me, it’s very important to fix those mistakes, some of them confuse Chinese players,
and some enrage Chinese players.
The game keeps updating for two years, but never focus on them.
1.【keep — 大型箭塔】→城堡/堡垒(大型箭塔 is anything but 城堡,they are different.)
2.【Monastery(Chinese) — 修道院】→寺庙(修道院 is Christian, 寺庙 is buddhism.)
3.【Battering Ram — 轻型冲车】→冲车/攻城锤(in AOE2,we can upgrade ram,so we can see 轻型冲车、中型冲车、重型冲车,but in AOE4, all we get is just ram,so 冲车 is correct, no 轻型冲车)
4.【Mangonel — 轻型投石车】 →投石车(the same reason with 轻型冲车)
5.【Sipahi — 突厥骑射】 →西帕希骑兵(It is very pity to see 突厥骑射 in AOE4 and AOE3, because they are totally different with 突厥骑射 in AOE2, 骑射 means Cavalry Archer in Chinese, but Sipahi in AOE4 and AOE3 do not get bow and arrow)
6.【Nest of Bees — 蜂巢炮】 →一窝蜂(I believe nest of bees comes from 一窝蜂 directly, and 一窝蜂 is well known in China. But when it translates back to Chinese, you get 蜂巢炮. Though this isn’t a big problem, but 一窝蜂 is the best.
7.【Monk(Chinese)—僧侣】→和尚(Chinese monk calls 和尚)
8.【Lancer(Chinese)—长矛骑兵】→关刀骑兵(the Chinese lancer’s weapon isn’t 长矛,they hold 关刀,so call them 长矛骑兵 is wierd.
As a Chinese speaker, I totally agree there are too many translation mistakes from AOE 2 to AOE 4. (They really need a Chinese-speaking translator in their group haha.) I would suggest that you had better post one point per thread, you put too many things here, too cluttered. Just let them separate, and make them clear.
