Incorrect Translations for Age of Empires IV the Sultans Ascend DLC

In the Byzantine civilisation, the heavy horseman called cataphract is translated as “Zırhlı Atlı” in the Turkish translation. Cataphract is a proper name and therefore cannot be translated as armoured horseman. Cataphract should be translated as ‘Katafrakt’. The same mistake was made in Age of Empires 2.

I fixed the Korean translation issues after the game’s release, as well as the localization that rapidly deteriorated after the release of the DLC, the most egregious of which was a badly scripted dialogue in the The Sultans Ascend DLC campaign. I’ve reported it several times, but it doesn’t seem to be getting through to the developers, and they don’t even seem to be aware of the issue, even though it’s been happening for a while. In frustration, I opened the LocaleKorean.sga file and did the localisation myself.

In my heart, I wanted to create and distribute it as a mod rather than making the developers tired, but since I couldn’t create a mod to modify the entire localisation text, I decided to deliver it to the developers with a desperate heart.

I hope you can just forward the attached file to the developer to check if it works and apply it.

Here’s a summary of the localization

  • Fixed subtitle errors in the The Sultans Ascend DLC campaign.
  • Fixed multiple translations of a single word.
  • Fixed mistranslated words and sentences. (Unit names, descriptions, challenges, etc.)
  • Fixed different translation styles in the same sentence into one.
  • Fixed incorrectly written commands (e.g. #ICON::menu_navigation::controller_menu_1## → ##ICON::menu_navigation::controller_menu_1##)

I couldn’t attach the file directly, so I’ve attached a link to the previous mistranslation check sheet. If you’re not comfortable with that, let me know your email address and I can forward it to you as an attachment.

There’s a download link at the bottom of the sheet.

It is unclear how many percent Defense gives Relic which is in the tower.

In Turkish version of game when we resume the game it should say “{Player} oyunu devam ettirdim.” instead of “{Player} oyunu özetledim.”

“Özetledim” means I summarized so doesn’t make sense.

There’s a space missing in the german translation for the Onna Bugeisha:

This is a really small issue but in the french masteries, when we are asked to win games with french civ, instead of french, it is written bizantine (masteries 3/11/15):

As the years go by, the game undergoes changes, and translation methods in games are now handled by more or less competent subcontractors at best, if not by Google translator or other translation tools.

Every translation error takes a considerable amount of time to be “properly” reported. Isn’t there a way of extracting/getting a complete table of translations in a given language, together with the original English version, so that motivated people can fix translations in a given language once and for all, without having to work on a case-by-case basis ?

Indeed, even if the original game at the time of its release, particularly the campaigns, are of good quality (in French for me), the DLCs and all the additions/modifications made since then seem to have been translated with less care. And I’m only talking about French, I realize that in other languages the problem is even greater.

Game Version : 12.2.33.27.0
OS / ESD : W11 / Steam

Description of the issue :

  • The description of the French mastery level 11 and 15 are totally wrong in the French version of the game. Indeed, it says win 5 times as the Byzantins instead of French at the level 11 (respectively 10 times for the level 15 of the mastery).

Reproduction steps :

  • Start the game with French selected in language settings.
  • Click on the mastery button on the main window and select the French Mastery (‘Maîtrise Française’).
  • Look at level 11 and 15 text description.

Solution :

  • Copy&Paste the French description from level 7, and just replace the number 2 by 5 at mastery level 11, respectively 10 at mastery level 15.

Actually even the level 7 description is wrong. Only the level 3 description is correct.

Wrong description level 7 (just need to replace “Byzantins” by “Français”, do the same fix for level 11 and 15) :

The new Knights of the Rose and the Cross DLC has several translation errors into Spanish (Spain). Below I write the errors I have found (but I’m sure there are some more).

  1. SOME TECHNOLOGY OR UPGRADE DESCRIPTIONS ARE INCOMPLETE. This affects, for example, Knights Templar commanderies.

  2. THE TERM “COMMENDARIE(S)” IS NOT APPROPRIATE IN SPANISH. The most logical translation is “Comandancia” or “Encomienda.”

  3. SOME UNITS HAVE DIFFERENT NAMES; that is, sometimes they have a specific name, and their upgrade has a different translation. Their translation is inconsistent.
On other occasions, the English “adjective + noun” order has been maintained, instead of the Spanish “noun + adjective” order.

  4. THE ABBREVIATION “CE” OR “EC” to indicate “After Christ” in dates is inappropriate in Spanish. Perhaps the expression “After the Common Era” has become popular in English (perhaps due to a rejection of Christian tradition? I’m not sure…), but in Spanish we still use the nomenclature a. C. (antes de Cristo) or d. C. (después de Cristo).

I believe that the byzantines still have these kind of errors in the spanish translation, I had to change to english to be able to actually read what the description say
