I have never modded before, but I know a bit of programming and I love AOE2, and adding a few new resources would be a perfect motivation to get started
I tried searching the forum and google, and to my surprise I did not find any relevant results.

It was possible to add a 5th resource in og version of the game using exe editing but I doubt its doable in DE.even if it was possible the entire UI needs to be changed to show the new resource.
As a work around, you could use the ‘variables’ with triggers but, not directly no. (That I am aware of.)
It would be cool, but I’m unaware of anything being possible, because i’ve never heard of any mods before that actually do such things. But, of course, google doesn’t hold all the information.
Oh okay. Damn it Is modifying the UI a big thing? As mentioned I don’t have experience modding AOE2, but I would guess it would depend on how it was implemented.
Thank you for you response in any case!
Yes, I would love to implement iron ore and iron as resources. Such that you could mine iron ore, and would have to somehow process it to iron, and then change prices on units to iron. I would even like to have the villagers collect the iron ore from the mining camp to an iron forge and then possibly get them to bring the iron to the black smith. You could then garrison villagers in the blacksmith to get a modifier for army production or something. Generally I would just love to make a mod where there is a bit more sim city and focus on economy building. I think this could make for more meaningful choices in the early game.
Instead gold would be a valuable trading resource which can buy any other resource for an advantageous exchange rate.
If I could make this work the ideas could expanded for other resources as well. Maybe wood could be processed to lumber.
Manorlord Aoe!! I think you should do it. Sounds painful. I know a guy who added some kind of res to a scenario with triggers and then made a UI mod.
Maybe its not exaclty what you want but its a start!
