Is nobody else concerned about the population limit?

Well, we could have these types of massive battles but they refused to increase the population limit so…

In Starcraft all resources deplete, in AOE4 and aoe2, gold and stone (and technically wood) are limited although you have infinite food in farms and gold if you can protect trade. I’ve only ever seen wood run out in extended island matches though. Usually gold doesn’t completely run out, but one player controls the gold in the center of the map so the other player eventually runs out if they can’t reclaim map control (although relics and sacred sites do offer smaller amounts of infinite gold if you capture them.

Sorry bro but 200 cap is enough. Having more than that is going to be too confusing and make the ceiling for noob players too high.

With editor you will be able to make maps with thousands of units.

Unless you play on a huge map like me  … or often in AoE2, it seems like there are a lot of stone and gold deposits which take a while to get through, so I feel it definitely takes a lot of time to crank through them all.

It is nice to have limited resources on occasion… maybe gold running out or whatever… or have some maps that allow easier dominance of the resources by one player – as it does force you to strategize differently… but I just hope it’s not an overly frequent/common of occurrence in AoE4

Gold really only runs out in post imp games, feels pretty similar to timing in aoe2, also this game added neutral trade for infinite gold if you can protect it.

My friends and I love Jumping AOE DE and battling with HUGE pop caps. This was taken out of AOE 4 for some reason. This absolutely needs to be brought back from the dead!

Eh age 3 also had neutral trade routes for gold generation.

But in age 4, any civ can theoretically have infinite food/gold and trade for wood etc, all you need are farms and relics.

I don’t believe anyone implied to make the standard games more than 200 pop, but we do need an option to increase population, I feel that is pretty standard and for more sandbox/custom experience, not everything has to be an esport, people do still play video games to have fun.

I just keep finding myself deeply disappointed between fielding a small, barely mixed-unit mess, when I could have entire cohorts. I could have cavalry to flank, artillery divisions for fire support, infantry of all types to maneuver and counter, but 9 times out of 10 I make a few maa, spam mangonels and cannons, and the game is over. It’s just not fun.

If this game gets the support it deserves there is gonna be a mod tool at some point and making of custom maps and custom lobbies. There there would be all kinds of crazy things that the community can make and no doubt pop cap different maps will be made.
Other than that the devs really have the game in a pretty bad state and are silent… i don’t think it would be wise to spent their time working on extra fan modes at the moment that could break alot of things anyway.

My point is it should’ve been something included from launch, along with a hundred other qol things and maybe functioning online lobbies too

And this is why I asked for my pre-order refund and am so happy with that decision, I took a break from the forums for 3 months and its even more of a circus than when the game launched. The toxicity here is incredible. I feel bad for the Relic engineers, people incorrectly blame them for all the issues of the game when its World’s Edge (Microsoft) who owns this IP, not Sega.

kind of proves that the game wouldn’t crash with high population limits…

My very uneducated and ignorant hypothesis that I’ve been unable so far to disprove is that those who make decisions underestimated the difficulty of chiseling relic’s engine to fit the normal, expected parameters of age of empires. Facing an insurmountable list of details that cut against the AoE grain, they chose to stake out a position that these changes are intentional and good for the series rather than what they really are — too time consuming to be deigned worthy of shaking into position. Thus we have poor zoom, bad hotkeys, unresponsive units, converted units dying, tanklike ancient siege units, no map editor, etc. One thousand papercuts. But they promise to keep hammering until the game is perfect. I respect them and appreciate them and will be patiently waiting for when the game is ready.

It would break late balance even more. But I agree 200 is a low number, considering siege take 3. 10 bombards/mangonels, and you already -20 pop. Although in army size it is almost similar to aoe2 (because in ao4 you have less vils).

But dreams are useless, because current Zoom wont show even 200 army at one screen.

No. If I’d want to play a Total War I would pick one. Learn the difference.

If for you increasing pop cap from 200 to <500 is all the difference between an AoE and a Total War game, maybe it’s you who should learn a bit about strategy games, to be honest.

It’s so cheap and absurd saying such a thing. Increasing pop cap would not change the gameplay a little bit, and standard (competitive and so) would still be 200. Here people is just asking for the possibility to set a pop cap, no one is going to take the already existing one away from the rest. It can’t be that difficult to understand.

Literally,

All we are asking for is an OPTION

as someone vaguely familiar with coding, do you know just how easy it’d be to add a slider or drop menu to match lobbies to just simply allow us to set population options.

It’s so frustratingly easy I almost want to do it for them and send it to relics ceo via email or something.

Edit:

I am aware of someone already making an injector using cheat engine simply to increase zoom, another incredibly easy thing that could be done in a split second.

the current pop limit is crap. 200 is too low. should be at least 400.
