If you are willing to disable it on this point, then I encourage you to do this, regardless of what you find. If your concern is about playing on uneven ground, then this matchup should not be one you want anyway. If you make this concession (playing ranked vs controller players as a KB/Mouse user), you know you’re at an advantage and it doesn’t change how you personally have to play the game. And wanting even grounds to battle on is a perfectly honorable position to take, tbh, just make sure that logic cuts both ways, when it affects either yourself or your opponent.
That’s not a very nice thing to say. I hope you realize they have the same toggle and they don’t have a lot of people to play with if we disable cross-play.
It’s not a very nice thing to do either, yet you’re willing to do it if you determine that this is an established way to auto-queue TC with KB/Mouse, despite the fact that it is likely <1% of Xbox players that will even take advantage of this.
I’m referencing this point here. In the end, you said that your true reason is that you “don’t want the game to change”, so I know this quote is not fully in context. But, on the assumption that you care to have even footing during a ranked match, and that you’re willing to disable cross-play if they can KB/Mouse with auto-queue, then it shouldn’t matter if they play ranked cross-play for auto-queueing KB/Mouse or just because they’re a controller player desperate to get matched up. It’s uneven footing either way, so accepting it when you are advantaged but not when you are disadvantaged doesn’t hold to the spirit of “I want even footing”.
Jesus… So what are you accusing me of? First of all they have AQ and auto-vill distribution to compensate for using a controller. Second of all, they’re matching against PC players by their own choice. If anything I am doing them a favor by not disabling cross-play, even though I don’t enjoy playing against them, because the few games where I do are weird. It’s like playing against someone who’s playing a different game.
This seems like a petty argument for no reason at all, other than trying to put me in a bad light because I disagree with you. Yes, I would disable cross-play if I’m playing against someone who has a clear advantage over me. Call me a hypocrite if that makes you feel better, even though I explained myself twice.
Good luck and sorry I’m not supporting changing a genre that many people love for a beginner that wants to be competitive in a week.
You’re not supporting changing a game that many people love. Age of Mythology is also RTS and decided this mechanic was okay.
I’ve not once played a ranked solo match. Trying to be competitive is not my goal. My goal is to enjoy the game I paid for, which I do, but see this mechanic as a QoL improvement.
Here’s the thing: I’m not trying to be antagonistic or accuse you of being a hypocrite. Because I don’t think you are. Truthfully. At the same time, I understand how it can come across that way, because it’s hard to read the tone of a post on the internet or know how a random person you’ve never met thinks. Also, I can admit at times my phrasing of things can be better or more complete so that it doesn’t come off as a direct attack or accusation.
If anything, my accusation is that you are not being honest in our discussion of this topic when you say things like “it will be uneven ground” as a reason you don’t want it, because I don’t think that it is (you can’t be a hypocrite if this is something you don’t really believe in). Rather than just sticking with your true reasoning, you are trying to objectively defend a subjective opinion. This is not a slight on you, it’s a pattern I see time and time again in discussions on a variety of topics, and I’m just not a fan of the idea that we have to make broad claims like they are objective truths to veil over our subjective opinion on a topic.
This is your most honest representation, and it’s a good one. Because our feelings matter without being wrapped around a layer of logic or with a majority opinion backing you up. Stick with this one. You don’t have to get defensive and make exaggerated claims that it will ruin a whole genre at the competitive level, or speak on behalf of “better players” and how they will experience the game. It will ruin your experience playing the game, and that’s enough. You and I are both entitled to our opinion and we have our reasons, subjective as they may be. I’m making my case and hoping my minority opinion can one day be majority accepted to improve my experience of an already fun game. No more, no less.
There was another forum member calling my points “fears” just like you’ve tried to make it about “honor”. Let’s not make this about me. Every person in this world is by definition an irrational being with a layer of logic on top. It will cause uneven grounds, objectively, and regardless of whether I’d allow it when it advantages me. I don’t think I’m a hypocrite btw, and I explained why, but even if I am one it doesn’t change the fact compensation is never going to be perfect, and adding a toggle like they have for Xbox would fragment the player base, because at least half of it doesn’t want automation. There have been polls on this forum, but this forum is not a representation of the whole player base, and if you don’t believe me just go on another platform like Reddit and make a post about automation and see how you suggestion is met.
Additionally, before they even consider introducing an option like this, they need to be sure they’re able to attract more players than they are pushing away, so I don’t think it’s going to happen any time soon, because companies, especially big ones, are usually risk-adverse.
If that’s the case, then you should be fine if they added this as an option to Customs only. This would not affect the experience for anyone else, and I’m sure no one would complain.
I dislike the idea or the expectation of changing a game because someone can’t handle it, regardless of the reason. People who for objective reasons can’t do certain activities should embrace the fact and choose activities they can handle. People with ADHD shouldn’t expect to do activities that are in direct contradiction with their condition. In this case, there is a plethora of games that are similar enough, and don’t involve changing the experience for everyone who’s bought the game expecting a traditional RTS, and got what they paid for.
I guess my only counter to this point is that it is already uneven grounds, but it’s fine. I’ve dragged this discussion on long enough, agree to disagree.
Are you referring to a toggle where you can choose whether your match supports using TC AQ? Like turning Dominion on or off as a win condition? That I’d be in full support of.
I didn’t even remember it was a thread I made xD.
If there’s no more to say in a few hours, I’ll close this thread.
I was referring to having a toggle similar to the one we have for crossplay with Xbox for people who don’t want to face different input methods. But adding that for AQ would fragment the already existing player base.
I don’t think a match-based allowance for the mechanic will fragment the player base the way you think it will. For one, the player base will fragment no matter what you do, with people dodging when they don’t get what they want. Second, it’s already a massive player base for people like you who are the adamant RTS purists. It’s not a net negative to get other people in and playing the way they want to play it. The tournament structures can still say “no TC Auto-queue allowed”, you can turn off allowing Mouse-based TC AQ in the matches you and the majority play (which solves your issue with keeping cross-play MP alive), and you bring people like us who are okay with the mechanic (or at least okay with playing with people using the mechanic) into the player base that otherwise wouldn’t be. fragmented on this one issue, sure, but it’s still a larger base and nobody is unhappy with their matchups. It’s hard to see the downside.
I dislike this kind of name calling. If I went to the Counter-Strike forums and asked for aim-assist because I have a condition, I don’t think people opposing me would qualify as “purists”. They just like the game the way it is.
Fair enough if you don’t think it will fragment the player base. I personally think it’s very likely that it will. We don’t know how many people would adopt it, and if it turns out to be close to half, that will definitely fragment the player base and affect matchmaking.
Same for me. I agree to agree to disagree. xD
It’s not name calling, not meant to be derogatory at all, and I apologize if I made it sound that way or if its been framed that way in the past to you. It’s not good or bad, it’s just a statement of fact. It’s what a purist is - you have a clear line of what makes an RTS and you want to play just that type. That’s how you perceive and enjoy the game, your preference and you have a lot of people who follow that same mentality.
Do other FPS games have aim-assist? I thought that was essentially aimbotting, forgive my ignorance on this topic I just don’t play FPS games lol
Won’t know if we don’t try, agreed. But, the way I see it:
Your matchups: people with preference of “no auto-queue” or “I don’t care”
My matchups: people with preference of “Auto-queue allowed” or “I don’t care”
My prediction is there would be quite an overlap in that Venn diagram for the “I don’t care” portion. Player base would be free to choose and your matchups would be the way you want them regardless of your preference.
As I see it, this is probably the best solution that’s been brought forth as it pertains to the subject of TC auto-queue. Will it ever be implemented? Very doubtful, AoE isn’t like Rocket League where they’ll focus on custom match features that’ll never make it to ranked matchups. But, at least it’s food for thought.
They do for people using controllers vs people using K&M, which funnily enough makes this a pretty accurate analogy.
I’m not so sure people would be indifferent to their opponent having auto-queue.
Neither am I fully certain, but given my experience with online matchups the better players would turn this on as a flex lol. “I let you auto-queue and I still rekt you. Git gud.” and all that
We could argue until the cows come home I say just add it to custom, skirmish and campaign and see how people feel about it in those modes and go from there.
