Make centurions ride at the rear of mixed formations

Ave omnibus,

The Romans aren’t out yet, but the optimal way of playing them seems to be having a core of legionaries, buffed by nearby centurions. If you mainly rely on your infantry, you’ll still put a few centurions.

The problem is that centurions are cavalry, thus by default they ride ahead of infantry in mixed formations. Meaning they’ll likely be among the first to die in combat, losing the commanding aura on the legionaries.

So my idea is : having the unit ride at the back of the formation, like siege weapons. They’ll stay relatively safe behind a curtain of infantry. There is already an unit setting to make some heroes stay at the back, use it for centurions.

Since centurions have more HP I don’t think they will die first when legionaries are nearby and engage in the fight just nearby

Against a mass of halberdiers, it’s likely the centurion dies first. Especially if he acts like Leeroy Jenkins and charges at full speed, which also means every enemy ranged unit will target him as he’ll be the first in range.

If you are against archer, archer user are more likely to snip all centurions first since they buff the remaining legionaries. It is the battle of micro imho. For a mass of halberdiers yes you are right

Yes but I meant what troops would automatically do. Of course you’ll focus fire on the centurions if they are close enough and few enough.

Even then, it requires the opponent to pay attention. Rams are used to catch all the arrow fire for a reason.

With the centurion automatically at the rear of the formation, you can send the formation (a lot of legio and a few centurions) to attack and be reasonably sure the centurion will do his job instead of acting like some famous WOW player (alright guys let’s do it, TITUUUUUUUUUS PUUUUULLOOOOOO !!!)

Good players can easily micro their Centurions and Legionaries individually.
But for a more casual player it would be nice if the Centurions stay behind so they don’t die as quickly against an AI player.

Like auto scout. But then, trying to make centurions stay behind would be a good way to practice micro

Most casual players do not want to become good players.
They just casually want to play AoE forever. Don’t force people to practice skills in a game like this.

Sure, you separate the centurions and legionaries into two control groups or easier… you attack first with the legionnaires to defeat the pikemen and maa and then you come with the centurions for when the rival sends you archers, crossbowmen or siege units…

It looks like the centurion will be moved behind infantry next update. Perfect !

I love smart suggestions like this and devs agree

What does this phrase mean?

“(Elite) Centurion formation position moved behind infantry units instead of in front of them”

Oh! That’s a good change. I like it. More thematically appropriate too.
