Thank you so much for your help, but I’m new to this mod and I don’t really know how to get it to work. Can you explain in more detail? I copied and pasted the folder named 238185_Mandate of Heaven and the files inside it into the local folder in the age of empires2de folder on my computer, but nothing happens in the game. When I run a custom game with mandate of heaven in the game settings, an error message appears and the game does not start.
In your list of mods, you should have Mandate of Heaven, with a cog icon, and Mandate of Heaven UI, with a tickbox:
To use the civs in a skirmish, select Mandate of Heaven from the Data Mod menu:
You should then be able to select Mandate of Heaven civs in the civ selection menu.
Nice idea, maybe something like a cross between Mongolia and Arena?
Yes, I’ve gotten that far. However, when I try to run the game, I get an error message and the game goes back to the main menu. I don’t know how to say it in English, but in Korean it says “데이터 세트에 예상치 못한 갯수의 문명이 포함되어 있습니다.이 오류를 해결하려면 정확히 일치하는 문명을 포함하는 civilation.jason파일을 추가하도록 데이터 모드를 업데이트 하십시오” i think it means “The dataset contains an unexpected number of civilizations. To resolve this error, update the data mode to add a civilisation.jason file containing the exact matching civilizations.” Thank you so much for your help. I’m so grateful to have so many kind friends here.
Hmm, I have a similar problem actually – when I run a game with the data mod selected I get an error message (it just says "error: problem loading data mod).
Didn’t look at all the suggestions but has anyone suggested a heavy cavalry equivalent of a Teutonic Knight? Or a heavy heavy cavalry archer?
We have already unique units with those traits
Boyar
Elephant Archer
I would like to see heavy elephant archers.
Not a unique unit idea. Perhaps just a civilization bonus.
That would be the elite version of the unit.
The Boyar isn’t slow enough and needs higher attack. The Elephant Archer doesn’t have high pierce or melee armor though.
That’s literally 2 of the UUs.
Iron Pagoda is extremely strong and expensive. And the Ordu is basically the love-child of the Heavy Cavalry Archer and a Paladin.
Also a small update. With BfG out, a lot more scenario items have become available that are really useful for things like encampments or nomads, so should be a lot more cute little details littered around now. In fact the 6th Tibetan level is near completion, and I even did a bit of the first Khitan one while I was waiting for BfG to release.
This also has meant an update to the 6th Taizong level. So spoilers ahead…

The Greco-Bactrian ruins have now been switched from the Mediterranean architecture set to the Hellenic one. And now instead of training Heavy Swordsman periodically, they train Elite Hoplites and Greek Noble Cavalry.
Could you please tell me how to fix “error: problem loading data mod”, are you working on this issue? I would appreciate it if you could answer.
War Wagon kinda fits like heavy version of cav archer. Granted Im not sure how to feel about cav archers with enough melee armor to solo a huskarl
That’s not an issue on our end, that is an issue with either your copy of AOEII or an existing mod conflict.
“Failed to load data mod” usually means that you don’t have a compatible version installed. The most recently uploaded version a couple of days ago is compatible with Chronicles.
Small update:
- Tibetan Blacksmith bonus is now that they have free cavalry armor upgrades.
- Tibetan campaign is now nearly finished. It just needs intro and outro slides. All the level mechanics are working, and bugs are being fixed.
- Fixed a bug with the third Chinese level where it was breaking every time.
- The Khitan campaign has been started, currently working on level 2. The Khitan campaign (following Abaoji, founder of the Liao Dynasty) will be 6 levels long, with a lot of callbacks to some classic levels.
Also an important update. We have changed the mods you need to subscribe to. This is because some internal files were causing the game to crash. Here are the links:
And as a little extra fun thing, a shot of a Tibetan army featuring their unique unit in it.
Some more images from the campaigns. This time with a bit more action going on, and a look at one of the new unique units.
In both of these we have the Khitans in-action. Firstly fighting a Cuman opponent outside an oasis city, and then Chinese in an icy encampment.
Around the edges of both battles you can see the Khitan unique unit, the Ordu, firing in to support the rest of the Khitan army.
The Ordu is a cavalry archer unit with high HP, armour and is a bit slower than most other cavalry units. It also does bonus damage to cavalry as well.
Another army profile, this time the Tibetans.
Here you can see the heavily-armoured units of the Tibetans fighting the Chinese in a pass, and the Koreans in a small village.
Of course, the Tibetan unique unit is present as well. The heavy-cavalry model with the red tassel on their lance is the Golden Arrow, named for the marking on their chest. The Golden Arrow is an anti-infantry and anti-horde specialist. Its lance punches through multiple models, while dealing bonus damage against infantry.
This makes them very good against pretty much anything in two legs. Although they are not so good when fighting against other cavalry or cavalry archers.
In the images you can also see units that the Tibetans bonuses push them towards. Their archer-line and cavalry archers have bonus armour. A Castle-Age unique tech that encourages the building of multiple monasteries makes it easy to splash monks into this army of tough troops. And their Steppe Lancers benefit from the cree cavalry armour upgrades.
