I didnt like ships tbh
It seems to me that they are not going to reverse the proportions or if they do it will not be enough for them to at least not stand out at first glance.
A pity that this game of steps backwards with respect to previous deliveries, making the artillery also go alone like a car.
Anyway, I leave this game to those who can enjoy it. As far as I’m concerned, except for news about proportions fix, I do not pay attention to it again.
I pray to god they will release a ‘realistic’ enhanced graphics patch to make the graphics go from ‘cartooney mobile game’ to ‘realistic cool looking miniatures’. The main fun of AOE is playing with cool moving realistic medieval miniatures. Or maybe someone from the modding community will save the game with a realistic graphics pack mod. I guarantee the number of people who share my concerns are not small. I’m a die hard AOE fan and I didn’t even pre-order the game nor seriously investigate being a beta tester, that’s how serious this is. The reason I play AOE and not other RTSes is the time period and the looks of the units. This is really a big deal. I went so far as to create graphics mods for AOE2 to correct ‘ugly’ units in AOE2 like my war wagon to bolt elephant mod or my Chinese to Iga civ mod. But all units looking ugly is too much to fix.
Again, I think they could REALLY fix the appeal of this game by releasing an enhanced graphics pack which changes the units to not look cartoony. They seriously look like cheap mobile game units, if they added a graphics pack which changes the colors and textures and makes the units look realistic, or at least closer to the look and feel of the units in any of the other AOE games, the fans of AOE2 would not get as alienated. And people who like cartoony graphics could just not download the enhanced graphics pack.
They made little improvements, but I’m still not convinced by the graphics. Especially movements are still clunky. It’s a 4/10 imo.
I’m happy that they made the arrows look better but the animation and the graphics in general doesn’t scream new game in 2021 for me.
There is something about those that I don’t like but let’s hope that once we played that for some day it will not be noticeable.
The last Gameplay trailer shows some Little updates that are not enough. Yes, arrows are normal (finally) and some units look pretty good but there are some things that developers have to improve before the final release:
- Building sizes: the actual Building sizes are stupid. I don’t wanna hear the stupid reason “readability”. Give options to players, it’s not complicated After all. I would like to see the same Building sizes seen into the x019 trailer: they were perfect, Jesus.
Now they look horrible;
water Is Simply bad and very step away from what we seen in the beautiful AOE3 de. Developers have to improve them;
add people to siege weapons: i don’t wanna see the robot trebuchet. Look at the AOE3
try to add some more textures on units: make them more realistic.
If those updates need more time and developers can’t delay the launch, start to make a Graphic DLC: this Is the only suggest that i can give to developers.
Unfortunately, It seems developers didn’t see what people are Saying.
I’ll wait the beta for more Deep impressiona but for now this game doesn’t seem a 2021 game and the most of community on different sites, reddit, Steam and YouTube are saying the same thing.
Hope for the something change.
Completely agree with the guy above. TBH at this point I wouldn’t mind waiting one more year for release.
Where we starter and where we are
I didn’t see such a downgrade from the famous “Watch dogs” case.
This Is the only game which would needed of some Little improvements to be perfect and we’ll probably have a worst game at launch. LOL.
Well just compare ship combat from AoE4 to this 15 years older RTS,
look at the footage after 5 min.
-damaged ships are burning in fire and smoke
-the attack arrow animation of the “evil corsair ships”
-how they sink
it has so much gravitas and looks even so many years later so amazing.
Is it really not possible for AoE4 to reach at least that 15 year old quality?
I think we just have to accept the fact that the graphics ain’t going to change, as sad as that is I hope the game play is amazing to make up for that.
This was the original Building sizes. Now we have the city of midget. Lol
That outer box doesn’t denote the old building size. That box denotes the area that units can path through but that other buildings can’t be built within.
I’m impressed with new showcase.
I hope we can see longer gameplay because it will make people much more excited than watching cinematic camera movements which makes game looks like ugly but actual gameplay is pretty good looking.
I don’t know this guy but this video take a look to the all discussions have been made about graphic concerns
And i’m pretty agree with him.
I am still waiting for the 4K video of the latest news to appear on youtube. But as far as I could see , some improvements have been made , they still have to improve the animations and graphics a little bit.
But remember they are not showing footage from the present time. This videos are compiled and edited at least a few weeks before an event. Considering that development for the Release version goes as far as October. They have at least 3-4 months to improve things , and this is what they will do.
We need to provide feedback to them , structured and on point so that it is much more easy to read and compile in a set of useful data. And I do think they will improve on what we notice as a community.
Regarding the naval combat , i do believe it’s not as good as it could be , but it’s not awful either. Someone made a comparison to Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth II . Which is my favourite RTS game of all times , and indeed at some level a 15 years old game does better than AOE IV , like unit scaling , much more realistic shaders especially on armor and weapons , manned trebuchets etc… All we can hope is that they will actually address our concerns even if post release updates are required to make the game perfect .
PS : Yes , not having people manning the cannons and no people on the ships does look a little off to me. I would really much appreciate if at least they could at people at cannons and stuff . As I know that ships according to AOE have never had a crew
And also please just stop with unit readability , they have added a lot of complex mechanics and features in the game that if you are a new player you will need time to learn the game with or without readability. What we want is a little bit more realism , to actually feel like you are in the medieval times and not at Disney.
It’s time for another “deep video analysis impressions”. I took screesnhots from the 4k source by the Xbox Showcase extended on youtube.
My preliminar impressions:
- Models look quite good but they need some more textures. They seem already “realistic” but the colors don’t give this vision. My suggestion is to add some more textures on armour (in particular chainmail), weapons and Horses;
2)weapons sizes should be changed and the blades colour too… They look “plastic” but there’s a really good example that developers could be follow:
this is a perfect rapresentation of a weapon: excellent model and color. Developers should take this.
- siege weapons;
the models are very good in these images but they needed of some people to moving them and preparing to fire.
- Navy and water
Also here, models are good but water it’s Horrible. Developers have to change or improve it. It’s not good.
- Building Sizes:
Please, units can’t have the same building proportions: it’s unrealistic and stupid. I know that there are “readability and competitive reasons” for this but introduce some options to change the building sizes for everyone who wanna play with more realism. The same sizes we’ve seen on x019 would be perfect.
So, this trailer it’s better than the previous one but a some more improvements on unit textures, water, siege weapons and building sizes would make this game much better for the main player base, imho.
I think I’ve explained this elsewhere on the forums but it may have been overlooked. The only building scaling option that would work would be in the z-axis. If you change the dimensions of buildings or units in the x or y axes, the models become incommensurate with the hitboxes.
What this means is that if you reduce the model sizes, things will interact over large distances (i.e. no contact) and if you increase the model size, the models all clip into eachother.
Great post man , I agree with what you posted . Hopefully they can implement this changes , or at least some of them. I really want people manning the cannons and more shading and textures on the weapons and armor. I am glad they have fixed the arrow and weapons scaling issues. They could further improve the building sizes , like make them 10-20 % bigger.
Keep up the nice posts.
I agree with that.
This may complicate the display, but we still need to have the sieges working with people
