I was wonder if this game would remain a permanent Windows Store Exclusive, or if we would eventually see it come to Steam
Personally I donât mind where I can buy it. There are already a lot of different platforms like Uplay, Origin, Blizzard, ⊠I think the platform doesnât matter, only the game. However I hope the multiplayer capabilities will be at least similar in ease of use and availability
You would not say that if you have experienced GFWL ;p
The platform does matter, if its bad like the platforms made by M$ have been for pc then it does not help the game, if it prevents you from starting the game or crashes the game because the platform is unstable that is bad.
Good point smitske!
I think it would be great if they would sell it on steam, but at the same time i agree that this could be pulling people to use the WPS more⊠i dont have anything against WPS⊠its just that i do have all other AOE games on steam currently and it would be nice to have this one there as well.
On the other hand⊠if you just have shortcuts of your most played games⊠who cares which store it boots up.
The reason of not being able to use the same community that is currently at steam is also kind of invalid, as everyone that wants to play AOE DE needs to move to WPS then.

This is a big misstep. AOEO failed mostly because of its association with GFW instead of being a bad game
Not 100% true. AOEO was also available on Steam for free. The micro transactions trend killed AOEO. MS tried to save it in the end but it was too late. Same thing happened with Neosaurs.
I upped your question, hopefully weâll get an answer soon.
It would be really great to see AoE DE on Steam because it would expand the community by a huge number of new players, which would make Multiplayer even more active.
Same as many others, I would really consider buying the game on Windows Store, but some extra distribution platform would be nice.
Hopefully multiplayer will work cross-platform then
An exit of the game on steam?
I would also like to know, as I would wait for the Steam release.
This game really is all about nostalgia, so i really think it doesnt matter where itâs sold people will buy it anyway. But yes i get your point.
The official announcement is that is going to be Windows store exclusively. ButâŠ

I guess the answer is pretty obvious but at the moment itâs not 100% sure because you need an Xbox live account to sign up for the beta. But since AoE3, AoEIIHD and AoMEE are all on Steam I supposse this will be there too.
Weâve chosen to release âAge of Empires: Definitive Editionâ exclusively in the Windows Store and weâre excited about what that entails, including tons of Xbox Live goodness (achievements, cloud saves, multiplayer on the fastest, more reliable gaming network and more).
Iâm aware of the fact that youâre paid to be excited and are not responsible for this decision, but I have to agree with the vast majority of people in all the forums Iâve checked so far: This is a terrible decision, and obviously has nothing to do with features, since Steam provides a platform for those as well.
In fact, I would even happily accept a lack of cloud saves and achievements for the trade-off of being able to play on the fastest, more reliable PC gaming network: Steam!
Nobody in my circle of (happily AoE II HD playing) friends is currently planning to buy this game, for the simple reason that we donât enjoy being pushed into an inferior platform (at least that was the case when we last tried it out).
Maybe if you had given us a choice and provided some incentives, we might have reconsidered the Windows Store, but like this, it will take a minor miracle to get us to buy the game at all. Such a shame. We were really excited after the announcementâŠ
Edit:
One factor I totally overlooked was pointed out here (by the way, the thread seems pretty indicative of public opinion of Windows Store exclusivity) :
The biggest AoE community today by FAR is Asia, and a lot of the people there have no way of upgrading to Windows 10, even if they wanted to. That doesnât mean that they wouldnât buy a non-full-prize game, though.
Im glad to change my OS to windows 10 , but I think Steam must be the option , but I hope AOE DE will be in Steam
First i was happy to see, that there will be a new AOE⊠but when it will be not available on steam, i am not sure if i will buy it.
There is a chance it will be on Steam.
In late 2012, Age of Empires Online was released as a âWindows Liveâ Title. It was also available on Steam.
I played it a little for the game itself, but I mostly logged in to chat with my Xbox Live friends.
After launching on Steam, you would log in with your LIVE account (same as Xbox Live) and then have access to Xbox Live Achievements and friends. It even used your Xbox Live avatar.
The bad news: Windows LIVE and the Windows Store have been completely overhauled since then.
But hereâs hoping that history will repeat
Honestly I wouldnât mind and would even prefer a Steam release by default but there is one very strong reason behind why I support the game being - and staying - a WIndows Store-exlusive title: Xbox Live. XBL is so much better than Steam at providing a smooth multiplayer experience that Iâm glad they are ditching Steam, especially seeing that a lot of people still have problems with AoE 2 HD online. Sure, I know that this is not the main reason why the game will use XBL but itâs still a huge benefit for gamers and if MS doesnât mess this up AoE DE will be a dream to play online.
I just hope that the AoE community will see why this is a good thing in due time because great online service is nothing without people to play with. Please, guys, just hold the horses and donât boycott this game, itâs going to be worth the hassle.
I am really sad that Age of Empires: Definitive Edition and Ori and the Will of the Wisps will be stuck as Windows 10 Exclusives with absolutely no logic reasons. Especially that AoE DE will be a PC-exclusive.
But unfortunately knowing how badly Microsoft wants all people to switch to Windows 10 (âbecause itâs the best systemâ, yuck), this is probably already decidedâŠ
But I still wonât loose hope.
