[Merged] Will AoE: DE be available on Steam?

I don’t want to change from W7 to W10 for a game, not even for my favorite game in the world… Please, PLEASE, make it available on W7. If it’s on Steam, even better.

I believe that they will keep it on Windows 10 store for the first little while. But after a little bit and the rough edges are taken care of, they will probably add it to steam.

I play on playstation, xbox, steam and a few others…depends on the game and how bad I want it and where it is at. What bothers me (and I am just a lowly mod lol but a gamer first) is that a few of the loudest voices on here for steam…are from steam. Not cool guys…take your toys and go back home. I C U B)

Age of Empires is a PC game and the PC gaming community is very attached to modding, customization and sharing.

If the game is released on Steam, I hope that Steam Workshop will be integrated into the game, which would reinforce the community around the game by allowing people to create and share mods, texture packs, custom scenarios, custom gamemodes, etc…

It may not come at launch but I think it’s important to support that kind of thing.
This was done in a brilliant way for Age of Empires 2 HD, I hope it will be the same for Age of Empires: Definitive Edition.

100% agree. I feel like they are not going to budge on the steam issue, but maybe they could integrate some type of modding support to make it easier and more customizable to mod the game.

I guess the answer is pretty obvious but at the moment it’s not 100% sure because you need an Xbox live account to sign up for the beta.

But since AoE3, AoEIIHD and AoMEE are all on Steam I supposse this will be there too.

We’ve chosen to release “Age of Empires: Definitive Edition” exclusively in the Windows Store and we’re excited about what that entails, including tons of Xbox Live goodness (achievements, cloud saves, multiplayer on the fastest, more reliable gaming network and more).

I know this comes from Microsoft’s policy to make the Windows Store profitable but the issue is that the whole Age of Empires community is using Steam and won’t use the Windows Store.

Releasing the game only on the Windows Store would reduce the game sales and divide the community which is used to play on Steam and to use the features Steam offers (including Steam Workshop).

Don’t make the same mistake you made with AoE Online, the game was really good but GFWL just killed it.

You (the people who took the decision) want to make Age of Empires: Definitive Edition the best edition of the game ? Don’t release it only on Windows Store.
This game is dedicated to the fans, for the 20th anniversary of their favorite serie so please, don’t waste that game and please understand why we want it on Steam.

I wouldn’t care that the game is using Xbox Live services if it’s on Steam, but I won’t buy it on the Windows Store. I’ll wait until the game is released on Steam.

Not every gamer has Windows 10 or buys from the Windows Store.

If they want this game to be a success, support for Steam Store and Windows 7 is a must.

I hope for a situation where Windows 7 and Windows 10 as well as Steam and Windows store players can all play together

Same, age of empires is my favourite game in the world !!!

But I have Windows 7 and Steam… I don’t want to be punished for that. I want to play alongside Windows 10 and Windows store users

The superior game of Age of Empires will always outclass it’s younger brother.

I was raised on this game and for the ol’ slugger to get a remaster will put it above its less in depth brothers.

That’s just my hope though, I love both games but this one will always be on top.

AOE3 is far more in depth than AOE1. In fact, it was so complicated that the simple mind average AOE 1/2 players can’t adapt to.

If Age of Empires III was more in depth then one, then why is the game play so short? Short game play doesn’t make a game in depth. Sure it had a connected Story, but the story isn’t even historical or real.

It was for Age of Empires however, whenever starting or winning a battle you could read the historical outcome of it.
Age of Empires II had some exaggerated bits, but it was historical as well to a point.

Age of Empires III is the AoE version of Starcraft II, shallow gameplay and meant to be fast. That isn’t real time strategy, that is who can rush faster. Nothing tactical about it. I see many similarities in three.

Of course, you can take a slower approach in both games, but those generally don’t happen.

Age of Empires? Even if rushed early on, you can overcome that, you aren’t placed at an immediate disadvantage by that.

I can point out a number of other games that does that concept well. A number of those being the Command & Conquer title which is without a doubt the best RTS series around IMO. Age of Empires being the second, but I don’t see C&C getting revived any time soon with it still in EA’s hands.

Of course when it comes to pure entertainment, Age of Empires will always be the choice I will go to. Not AoE II, not AoE II, but the one that gave birth to them - Age of Empires itself.

BACK TO THE TOPIC THOUGH:

You can say what you want, but if they release on multiple locations, GOG, WINSTORE, and STEAM, and for hard copy, this game will come back to the forefront. If it does well, we could see a resurrection of other titles from other developers. As a gamer, I would love that.

However, seeing that we only know so far they are going with the window store, I can’t really see that I’ll shell the money out to buy it. I already have the disc version of the original. Why would I want to enable bad decision by microsoft?

I don’t even own an xbox, never have, never will because it is lackluster compared to the PC and Playstation.

If they are going to go a horrible route, then this game will end up like Command & Conquer, and that is really going to suck because Microsoft and EA don’t understand what it takes for gamers to want the game and to place it on a medium that will sell.

I can say the same for the Microsoft store, the loudest voices here telling how great it is and all the great features it has (same as steam features btw) are M$ employees.

Also I wonder who is paid by steam then? Its a pretty bold claim, unlike mine since this is an M$ paid forum with M$ employees that are marketing their M$ platform.

Not that I am advocating for steam per se, just against the windows store. Fool me once with GFWL, I won’t be fooled with the windows store.

What I read in favour is that it will be with live, it will make it an xbox experience. If i want that I get a console, I want the pc experience and the windows store is all about giving that xbox experience on pc, not a pc experience.
M$ ironically does not understand pc gaming. Microsoft games studios does not understand pc gaming.

I understand they’re trying to push the Xbox platform on PC, but not publishing this on Steam will be their loss. And it’s gonna happen nonetheless, sorry.

how can i donload the beta???

Not available yet. People will be invited privately.

No way this game will have anywhere near a healthy playerbase compared to AoE2. The sequel is generally considered far better, has built in mod support on Steam, and is still in the top 100 played daily (9400 peak today, in fact). In addition, the Windows Store does not work well (Gears 4 required several restarts to finish) and has had absolutely dismal player counts in other games (https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/windows-10-store-refunds-call-of-duty-player-because-nobodys-playing-it), forcing players to quit the game entirely.

No mods are supported on the W10 store - everything is encrypted. It should be noted that this game isn’t even on the Xbox; using this game on the W10 store is a poor excuse for a trojan horse.

This game will suffer immensely on the W10 store. Myself and many others would happily buy it on a functioning storefront that doesn’t aim to completely restrict the PC environment.

As much i love these people for bringing back aoe 1 , i think its a stab in back of the gamers for who supported the series on steam with their wallets allowing more expansions and games to released.
Remember MS once you take this path there can be only hate. I will list a few examples

  1. Remember how they brought back zoo tycoon only on x1 ? dont remember ? yeah thats what happens
  2. Rise of tomb raider -> no need to say more perfect example of what happens with ms exclusive
  3. AOEO -> i still think its one of the best online games but failed hard because it was xlive if they had only converted to steamworkds

We should vote with our wallets , no need to get angry, once they see losses , either the game will be left4dead or released on steam.

Pretty disappointed as someone who was requesting for this game for years before, its sad to see it meet such a sad end.

I hope this games failure to sell well is not blamed on zero empires its not their fault its becuase of xlive

If the game is published in steam, it would be great since most gamers prefer it. In my case i do not have any problem with the game using the Windows Store as long as it does not negatively interfere with the game.

Why do they prefer it?

Why do they prefer it?

Because like 80% or more of those who play PC games use steam?

Me, I use steam only for certain games. I have found some of my disk based games play better via steam.

However, STEAM is such a weak experience, I still prefer my disk based games. I was raised with discs, and most hard-core gamers, those who want FREEDOM from patches, but we live in a day & age that you need to release quickly, rather then release a complete game. -Sigh-

Dark Reign for example - Disk based. Not on Steam.
Red Alert for example - Disk based. Not on Steam.
Age of Empires (With Rise of Rome) - Disk based. Not on Steam.

I can name plenty of amazing games that SHOULD be on steam and just aren’t for a number of reasons.

Yet garbage games get released in a plethora and they just clog it up.

At Least with GOG, you can filter those out or get them for dirt cheap.

Dear M$ fanboys,

do you remember how they destroyed Ensemble Studios? By letting a pc developer deliver the so called great “x-box goodness” and closing down the studio afterwards. And now you want to bring this great x-box goodness back. You probably don’t learn from your errors M$. Back in the days you embraced modding and scenario design and even sponsored design contests for the Age of Empires series. And now I’m ashamed that i’ve taken part on those contest because you’ve become anti-PC and anti-modding M$. PC gamers don’t embrace x-box goodness. They hate it.

The game will be PC exclusive. Nobody wants it on xbox…
