Microsoft, DLC for AoE1 please!

Question, is this called Age of Civilizations?

Almost all of the ones we selected were great civilizations or empires, beyond the name of the game. Israel was never an empire. But any new content will be nice.

Palmyra was a city state…

In my opinion, Palmyrians do not deserve to be there, I prefer Parthians.

Parthians are covered by persians I think both overlap too much.

The argument with the city is fuzzy, because in ancient times it was mostly only cities that exercised power. Carthage is such an example. It was also just a city.
At the time, I was also surprised that Palmyra was included, but after reading up a bit, I had to admit that I had underestimated it. Yes, it was ā€œonlyā€ a city of the province Syra. But incredibly powerful in its heyday.
For example, it single-handedly saved Rome from the Persians (Sassanids). And I chose the word ā€œsavedā€ on purpose, because Rome suffered fatal defeats against the Persians before. Previously, Palmyra had sought an alliance with the Persians against Rome, but the Persians rejected it. Who knows how it would have gone on with Rome in this constellation.
In addition, the city had its own senate and an independent tax system.
The city was a central trading hub in the trade with India. Palmyra was always able to profit from its connection to the Silk Road and thus attained considerable wealth.
As a result of the victory described above, Palmyra suddenly became an important power factor in the region and de facto independent. As a result, Palmyra conquered large parts of Mesopotamia from the Persians.

So, it was more powerful than believed.

After watching the movie The Old Guard, I’d much like to see the Scythians introduced in the game. According to what I’ve read, they were skilled with bow and arrow, and also, allegedly, the first (or one of the firsts) to use horses as a mean of transport.

I don’t know which historical period the picture is supposed to represent, though. Excuse my ignorance (I just started studying History).

Empire Earth proves you wrong.

A game where you can build civilizations is not a historically accurate one.

Yes they would make a great addition as an umbrella cavalry civilization.

That game has a civilization builder tool so you can make any civilization you like.

That a different game considers Israel a civilization does not mean that AOE does it as well. That does not justify anything.

Anyway, I don’t think they add them. If there is something new, I am sure they are not the best candidates. And I also don’t think they add anything new. :sob:

If civ design followed Aoe2’s method, I would agree that they don’t make sense and don’t add anything new but it isn’t hard to add civs to Aoe1 due to the lack thereof and no Unique units and unique techs required.

Currently when you add a civ they must have some bonuses 3-4 at least and preferably something that other civ don’t have. Then you must give them also military units which can’t be all same that some other civ has.

Lets say we add Celts and Germani as two new barbarian civ. I would make Celts more cavalry and priest (druids) civ and Germani more infantry civ. And I think Germani should have some infantry related bonuses maybe movement speed.

What about the Choson? Phoenicians? Minoans? The Indians, Celts, Scythians, Etruscans and Mitanni would be better fits.

you need to look at those from the architecture perspective.
The original game had 4 architecture sets.

  • Greek (Greek [main land], Minoan [islands], Phoenician [colonies] )
  • Egypt (Egyptian, Assyrian, Sumerian)
  • Mesopotamia (Hittite, Babylonian, Persian)
  • East Asia (Shang [China], Choson [Korea], Yamato [Japan] )

And this game covers Bronze Age also, so the civilizations were also created to cover Bronze Age.
That’s why there are civilizations such as Choson, Phoenician and Minoan.

This game had 5/12 Bronze Age only civilizations (Minoan, Sumerian, Hittite, Shang and Choson), and 2/12 Iron Age only civilizations (Persian, Yamato).

  • Celts, Indians and Scythians wouldn’t fit for any of the categories above which is why we don’t see them (they would need their own architecture).
  • Etruscans are covered by the Romans.
  • Mitanni would be similar to Hittite, so why include it?

If you could get one(1) new architecture set and 2-4 new civilizations to go with it what would you choose?

The ancient Chosons had a large empire (conquests under Wiman) that lasted over 1000 years and survived even the Romans.
So in my opinion, this civ is completely right.
