Another hot take: I donāt actually hate AoEIVās UI lol. Itās definitely a bit jarring but you can understand what Relic was attempting to do here whether or not you agree with the reasoning. I think it is more intuitive than AoE2s concerning tech upgrades. The unit icons themselves could have used more flavor I think. The bronze background with the gold unit highlight just seems a bit off to me.
Still, I much prefer the artwork displayed in the previous games. In short, the UI isnāt what turned me off the game.
I agree, and this isnāt related to you comparing the icons at all, it reaches back to something I was discussing earlier, about completeness, etc. More me just rambling now really
AoE II was a finished game. The DE is another edition on top on that. The original icon detail wouldnāt have come across as detailed; as sharp. But in the re-release, this polish was applied. And weāre comparing it to a game that has gotten a single release.
Itās actually a really fascinating deep dive into player psychology and iconography, but this prolly isnāt the thread for it haha. Iām not saying youāre wrong to use them either.
AoEO UI is the best. Here is the military tech tree for the Indians, which is a mix of some original techs and icons plus new ones our artists made recently. I think they ooze personality. Compare to AoE4.

Take look at all the popular games from mobile games like Candy Crash

They are not big because they would be complex and hard to play.

Oh OMG, you are picking Candy crashā¦ COD etc and saying they are hard to play xD
Ok, I think you are 3-5 years old kid at this moment.
COD is basically WASD and click mouse 1 and 2ā¦ Anyone can play itā¦
Candy crash is just about matching colours etcā¦
And you say they are hardā¦
They are one of the easiest game there ever!
And COD is not a small game!
90GB for MWII
Campaign 4+ hours content,
Spec ops, MP, Warzone etc lots of huge contentsā¦
Ahh, you dont have any experience in talking games at this stage and I lost my interest to youā¦
Yeah, discussing with kid that fails to use basic quotation is pointless. As well as any attempt with person that starts making attack against other person due to difference in opinion. But at least I tried to discuss it with you. You chose to show what you are.
unpopular opinion here, aoe3 og looks better than aoe3 DE, sorry but aoe3:DE textures in some cases look TOO clean and kinda cartoony too, i also preffer how the water looks in the OG version.
(aoe3 DE still has a superior landscape + nature, dont get me wrong but i think i preffer the OG one) , maybe its my nostalgia childhood, idk but i preffer the 2005 og AoE3.
also notice thereās rain thats just there for atmosphere of a map, smt aoe4 could use more of
to be fair, this is a very busy screenshot for just terrain, but point is, you can still borrow elements of whats present here and simply redo them with aoe4ās style in mind, itād look really good even in that style
IāM really sorry to say it like this:
Compared to aoe3, aoe4 is just a huge disappointment in any regard.
You canāt even compare them.
Aoe4 is alpha/beta, aoe3de is finished release.
My friend and me decided to leave aoe4, we are going back to aoe3de.
Itās just too painful, so many things are not thought through, graphics are 2/10 for 2021 game, tons of bugs, almost no communication about further development, boring boom meta, you canāt ungarrison units to the chosen direction and and andā¦
Thank you Relic!
Again, environment seems to have little to no effort in AoE4. Lots of reused assets like trees makes each biome feel the same, furthermore, biomes do not feel like the intended biomes. No using of colour temperature, no use of effects like sand storms or snow, rain, mist, no use of anythnig to give it a feel.
Really disappointed by it. I doubt it will ever change.
