New Battle Royale game mode!

You are absolutely right, thanks to the tournaments and the visibility that the best players in the world have given the game, showing that it is more than just a simple rts when playing and doing extraordinary things in matchs is that AOE2 has become so famous and has become popular again today.

mods and campaigns have always been there, but the competitive community is the new thing that has sparked this new wave of popularity (not to mention the casters of the elite players)

in which case, what civilizations would you like to see?

North America and Central African representatives. Some more South American ones would be great. Just to list a few Kongolese, Zimbabweans, Swahili, Yoruba, Mapuche, Muisca, Pueblo, Haudenosaunee, Mississippians, Chimu,…

Even though it’s unlikely to happen, Tongans, Samoans and Tibetans would be great.

You could easily theme them into one expansion like the last DLCs.

I give you a point because you’re right, although I don’t know what to tell you, I don’t know if the developers have time to make more civilizations or have it as a goal, but yes, America has only 2 campaigns which is ridiculous, we don’t even have a Mayan campaign, Maybe you’re right, the ad is just a small glimpse so I hope they have an extra campaign saved or something like that for a single player

At the end of the day, I hope every part of the community is considered.

I should rather play AOE2 than talk about it I realize 111

What’s the story behind this? I am reading about this the first time…

Back in 2013, when it came to big names, I only saw TaToH playing AOF. The rest was playing AOC. It took quite some time until the rest of the experts switched, also considering that most tourneys were AOC tourneys back then. I might be wrong though, but that’s how I saw the situation back then.

Memb organized the first big expansion tournament. Not sure if it was KOTD or something else. In my opinion, we have to be really thankful for Memb, he’s aguasome how he would say.

Will we able to play this battle royale with a friend in a 2-player-team (similar to Fortnite and other BR)?

Can’t say I’m all that hyped about BR, but that’s because I’m all about ranked ladder 1v1s at this point. But I support the devs adding modes for people who have different interests. I’ll definitely play it on occasion. And ultimately if it helps bring more players into the community I support it fully!

I hope that’s allowed!

Yes, you’re right, I was excited for the moment but thinking coldly I hope they add more content for a player and not only focus on multiplayer for new players

will this mode have ladder/MMR?

Nope, it will be just unranked

If you make your own br lobby, you can hopefully do what you want with the mode and combo it with all the other lobby settings you want

I’m not a huge fan of Battle Royale games. (I don’t even play PUBG)

But I feel like since this is just a casual game mode. let players have fun with it.

New civs is not gonna happen simply because the devs intended this version to be the final version of AOE2. If in a far future AOE2 dies, DE is the last version.

We already got 8 free campaigns. Let’s just keep it cool

Scouting for camps is a coin flip.
Whoever finds camps first spams faster & takes massive lead. I was expecting something like:

:small_blue_diamond:4 Starting villagers (slightly higher hp, armor, regenerate hp) and a small army while resources generate slowly.
:small_blue_diamond:Random Loot Chests in the map granting resources, units or free upgrades.
:small_blue_diamond:Then you expand using the villagers (build tcs, structures) as the area shrinks.
:small_blue_diamond:Villagers don’t need to drop off resources; they can chop wood, collect gold, stone, food assisting resources income.
:small_blue_diamond:Town centers & all structures are built faster.
:small_blue_diamond:X9 tech mod to make the gameplay versatile.

Squeezed all this in 5 mins. But im sure some of you guys here have some great additions.

Mississippians:

Those are not ā€œTeepee civsā€

Pueblo:

Iroquois

Chimu:

We got Huns and Mongols and for some reason those don’t bother you while we have Cahokia which was larger than Medieval London.

The only troublesome thing is that it’s pretty hard to find fitting leaders, because with simple Internet research, you won’t come far, though considering that Microsoft went out their way to consult First People for AOE3, something similar for AOE2 would be imaginable.

In terms of long-term value, campaigns are clearly way inferior to new civs. Most of them, I didn’t even touch again in DE. Why play something I’ve already played through once? For the achievements? For the small tweaks which are basically not noticeable?

If the DE’s are just a ploy to get us to play AOE4, so far they failed me. There’s nothing convincing me to play AOE4 over AOE2. With fewer civs and a focus on the competitive part of the community like they shown multiple times with their mostly MP related updates (as the latest Battle Royale update), you’re not going to convince the SP community to play your games. I’d rather that they focus on supporting the DE’s with expansion packs.

To be honest, and I might be weird on this regard, I’d prefer if they’d keep updating regularly games with good expansion content than releasing every year a new version of basically the same thing just to have slightly better graphics like they do with FIFA.

Why should I play what just seems to be a very similar take on the AOE2 formula while I still have AOE2? I don’t want to wait again 3 expansion packs until I get a game featuring African, American, Asian and European civs, especially considering that we’ve got only 3 civs for the second biggest continent in the world so far. Not talking about the measly standard 3 American civs we got.

I might be overly negative but I see no point in purchasing AOE4 right now, not with the focus they have right now. It could even become the next Dawn of War 3 or Grey Goo if they betray too much of what makes AOE great and I’m definitely not talking about 5 minute rushes you see in way too many ā€œmodernā€, ā€œstreamlinedā€ RTS games.

RTS got basically attacked the last decades by two directions. On the one side, the MOBA stole the part of the community which was more interested in action and fast games while the city builder games stole the part of the community which was more interested in building pretty cities etc. If AOE4 can’t find the balance between the two, it’s doomed to fail.

I’m sorry for my rant, it’s just how I feel the situation is right now.

I think the biggest improvements for Battle Royale are a randomly placed circle of death, like in other Battle Royale type games. At least for maps with more even base distribution, like El Dorado. Also, sort-of like in other Battle Royale type games, dealing the finishing blow to an enemy opponent awards bonus resources. There’s a chance such a bonus could make current snowballs in progress even more unstoppable. But due to the luck based nature of Battle Royale games, I think such a snowball is likely to win even without the bonus. I’m thinking bonus resources would be more useful for players who are behind and are lucky enough to snipe an opponent’s last batch of units.

Loved the tournament, here are my few suggestions.

I think circle shouldn’t always come down to the center.

Sprinkle some relics around on the maps, which can be controlled. (sort of like camps without defenses)

Maybe on some camps you can convert the gaia units.

Variety in defenses - Fortified Towers, Kreposts and Fire Towers maybe.
