New Info About the Obsidian Mirror DLC (April 21st)

From across the ocean comes a glorious new world pantheon.

Obsidian Mirror introduces the Aztecs to Age of Mythology: Retold in a bold, long-requested expansion that reshapes how gods, mortals, and mythic power collide. Built for players eager to expand their experience and explore a mythology rarely seen in RTS games, this expansion delivers new gods, mechanics, monsters, and an epic campaign driven by divine rivalry. Aztec mythology introduces themes explored at mythic scale in the RTS, with an emphasis on sacrifice, illusion, and the flow of life and power.

Take command under three new Major Gods, each offering a distinct playstyle. Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, rules as a wise priest-king, accelerating his people with the power of wind while strengthening culture and learning. Tezcatlipoca, the Smoking Mirror, embraces night, chaos, and sorcery, summoning underworld minions and bending reality through illusion. Huitzilopochtli, the god of sun and war, demands sacrifice and devotion, granting devastating power to those willing to give everything in his name.

Expand your divine influence with nine new Minor Gods, each bringing unique god powers, myth units, and strategic depth inspired by Aztec legend. Command deities such as Itzpapalotl, the obsidian butterfly of death and magic. Call upon Tlaloc, master of rain and destruction. Unleash Xolotl, whose corrupt influence twists enemies into monstrous forms.

Obsidian Mirror introduces Fear and Illusion gameplay, offering new ways to dominate the battlefield. Lay traps, manipulate enemy behavior, harvest life force, and construct towers from fallen foes. At the heart of Aztec power lies Tonalli, the essence of life released in battle. Every fallen warrior will fuel divine Favor and empower your gods and driving your civilization forward. Even your villagers can offer their life force when greater power is needed.

The all-new 12-mission campaign tells an epic story of divine conflict and survival. When the eternal rivalry between Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca destroys the utopian city of Aztlan, Huitzilopochtli seizes the moment to lead his people south in search of a new empire. Meanwhile, Tezcatlipoca escapes through his Obsidian Mirror, crossing continents to recruit legendary allies and reclaim his dominance. Gods will clash, alliances will fracture, and the fate of the Aztec people will be decided by blood, belief, and power.

Obsidian Mirror is a dramatic evolution of Age of Mythology: Retold. For fans who have waited years to see the Aztecs rise, and for strategy players drawn to bold mythic themes and inventive mechanics, this expansion delivers a fierce new vision of divine warfare.

DAMN you are quick!

someone posted this:

and i think he/she is right with the prediction!
i like the designs personally! and from what i see i also like the roster of male and female gods and major gods and their design (Tezcatlipoca as a humanoid jaguar is REALLY cool. i like the Quetzalcoatl monster design even i think a humanoid alternative like Tsukuyomi had at release would fit well but if not i wouldn’t mind at all)
i really likethe female god designs especially. and it seems there will be two heros this time? i like the female design here aswell very much with the jaguar - awesome!

about the myth units: a gigantic armadillo is a hilarious but also really interesting and cool idea. also a giant owl-like monster which can sit on ground like Roc is cool. the giant seesm to have a flesh and a stone version.
and
omg
JAGUAR RIDERS! i am so happy right now! (i assume it will be a valkyrie like myth unit - but whatever it will be i hope it won’t be just campaign included that would be a bummer. i’d like to train a valkyrie-jaguar army!

i assume the buildings shown are from classical age.

it seems many will be happy that its basically confirmed that the caravan unit will be humans carrying stuff.

i still need to get it together especially regarding the jaguar riders (which were a big wish from me) and the gigantic armadillo (construct?).

Nice! thank you

This has obviously been done way better than the Blood and Bones Gore DLC., which is a shame considering the features of the Aztec Pantheon

Quetzalcoatl - Wise priest-king, accelerating his people with the power of wind while strengthening culture and learning

So maybe he buffs priest-units, let researches be quicker and maybe cost less or bring bonuses? for me it sounds a bit like a mix between… Thoth, Ptah, Nephthys?

Tezcatlipoca - The Smoking Mirror, embraces night, chaos, and sorcery, summoning underworld minions and bending reality through illusion

So maybe he buffs something like warlock/shaman or ā€œfanaticā€ unit? sounds a bit like a mix between hades, hekate?

Huitzilopochtli - The god of sun and war, demands sacrifice and devotion, granting devastating power to those willing to give everything in his name

So maybe a buff to hero-units, infantry and godpowers? so maybe a mix between vidar, ares and susanoo?

When the eternal rivalry between Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca destroys the utopian city of Aztlan,

now i have an image in my head where Tezcatlipoca will send some giant monster (the titan unit?) and fights Quetzalcoatl in its monsterous form as a titan. now that would be epic. Huitzilopochtli will be - i think - the Zeus of the greeks or the Shennong of the chinese etc. the ā€œbaseā€ god of the campaign. but just my assumptions.

Reading the article on Fandom Wiki I have found this

It will be included in the Expansion Pass for the game, which will be available for a one-time purchase. It can also be purchased individually if not opting for the Expansion Pass. This expansion is not included in the Premium Edition of Age of Mythology: Retold.

Imagine if you have to buy Expansion Pass only for the Aztec Pantheon, pretty bad huh?

Don’t forget we have now a release date: april 21th

(as shown in the steam page)

This looks amazing. The jaguar riders are really cool looking and a great way to have a calvary unit. All the gods/goddesses look really cool too. The buildings and myth units are top tier as well. I’m super exited to play it next month. It’s coming out sooner than I expected too.

I’ve been waiting for this Pantheon for several years, and I really wanted the Aztecs. However, I was disappointed by what the developers showed me. It feels like I don’t even want to continue playing this game anymore. The most disappointing part is the selection of mythical creatures for the Aztecs: rabbits, armadillo, a worm-like snake, scorpions and the jaguars riders, which are complete nonsense. It’s very sad. I was hoping that there would be a giant bat (tzinacantli) that could have an interesting vampirism mechanic… There were options for other mythical creatures, but they chose the worst ones. A woman on a jaguar, which isn’t even in mythology, but it’s just a developer’s imagination. I’m very disappointed with the Aztec Pantheon.

It might be worth getting a refund.

hey. i think some of the units you pointed out like the rabbits (moonrabbits or Centzon Tōtōchtin) and and the snake ( Maquizcoatl) are either godpowers or campaign exclusive.
there are also unlike you are criticising some big/well known ones like the Tzitzimitl, the Ahuizotl and the Quinametzin. Also since you are refering a giant bat: there is the Chalchiuhtecolotl the giant owl which is pretty cool too. armadillos seem to be very connected to aztec culture too aswell as Axolotl. these are already 6 very good options.
the jaguar riders are maybe more ā€œpop cutlureā€ like every civ has some of these units but I LOOOOOVE them. really hoped for such a unit and that they are female warrior units makes it even more unique in my opiion.
but when i first saw the rabbit and scorpian i was a bit confused and concerned too but i think those are really godpowers (or campaign specific). so i wouldn’t worry in that regard too much.

so there are - at least after my calculations - about 4 myth units left. maybe at least two of them are to your satisfaction. i would wait a bit more its still several weeks left and they will drop more news these next weeks.

my calculation*: - just an idea!
Classical Age: Ahuizotl , Jaguar-Valkyrie, Tzitzimitl

Heroic Age: Quinametzin, Armadillo, (x land - possibly Amoxoaque?), (x water - possibly Axolotl?)

Mythic Age: Chalchiuhtecolotl , (x land - possibly Xiuhcōātl?), (x land - possibly Atotolin?), (x water - possibly Xochitonal?)

*just speculation tho

I’m criticizing what I’ve written. I don’t really like Tzitzimitl, the Ahuizotl, and the Quinametzin, but I don’t have any complaints about them. Scorpions play a minimal role in Mesoamerican mythology, and they’re rarely mentioned, and the owl isn’t very popular, so I don’t see anything good about them. There’s no information about armadillos, and it’s more of a myth. The women riding jaguars are nonsense. The Aztecs didn’t have female warriors. You’ve already got Amazons, so why drag this stupid theme into the new pantheon just because you want to?) It’s silly. As a result, the pantheon is just as empty and tasteless as the Japanese pantheon. It seems that this addition was made quickly and without much effort.

I wouldn’t give up hope just yet. At most I can only see 9 potential myth units (educated guess). I doubt the scorpion is one, and I feel the owl might be a god power. So there is still another 2-3 myth units we haven’t seen yet :pink_heart:

I feel like the trailer will show more units and god powers, especially mythic age ones like Volcano.

That was nothing new, we knew about that from the beginning. Only the Blood and Bones is suppose to be exclusive to the Pass, but you can’t buy Demeter of the Fan Pack thingy individually yet.

Basically the expansion pass is worth it if you want Demeter and the Aztecs, the 2 small DLC are just additions on top.

You’re upset becasue your fever dream didn’t come true

completely agree with your comment. The scorpions, the armadillo, and the jaguar riders seem utterly ridiculous to me, especially since they play very minimal or nonexistent roles in the mythology. At least they didn’t include the Amoxoaquea, who are also an invention.

As for the rest of the selection, I don’t like Maquizcoatl, but it’s acceptable. Camazotz (or Tzinaca) and Xiuhcoatl are missing. I feel that the Aztec pantheon hasn’t received the same level of attention as the Japanese and Chinese pantheons, whose selection of deities and mythical units seems much better curated.

Similarly, the selection of gods feels quite random. Huehuecoyotl and Itzpapalotl are far from being the most representative deities of Aztec mythology. The latter, perhaps, would work better as a unit rather than a minor goddess. However, Tezcatlipoca’s appearance looks quite cartoonish, though that ultimately comes down to personal taste. I’ve rarely been this disappointed with an Age of Empires DLC, but considering what happened with Demeter, I suppose it was to be expected that the same would happen with the Aztec pantheon, really really disapointing. I understand these are first impressions, but after what happened, I don’t even feel like playing

ok whatever you think, i tried.

about the armadillo i wonder why its so gigantic (looks bigger than behemoth for me which would be really odd.(cause behemoth you know)
still love the jaguar valkyries very much
the scorpians are surely a godpower or campain thing. don’t put too much thought into - yet at least.
