Norman cavalry, unique unit for the Sicilians
Many civilizations included old one gain two unique units.
I suggest to replace the Knight line for the Sicilians by the Norman cavalry line (Norman knight and Norman cavalier).
For the model use the Robert Guiscard hero unit, so there is only one new skin to make. Norman knight use the Robert Guiscard skin and Norman cavalier use the same skin with a more armored horse.
My idea is based on the Norman cavalry of the Bayeux tapestry. Those riders wearing hauberk and use spear. They have a ranged melee attack like the steppe lancer. I decrease their attack by 1 to compensate and decrease their attack rate to the same rate as the steppe lancer.
Norman knight
Melee attack 9 (Knight 10)
Reload time 2 (Knight 1.8)
Range 1
Special : benefit from the team bonus who affect the knight line (Franks and Persians)
Other statistics same as the Knight
Norman cavalier
Melee attack 11 (Cavalier 12)
Reload time 2 (Cavalier 1.8)
Range 1
Special : benefit from the team bonus who affect the knight line (Franks and Persians)
Other statistics same as the Cavalier
I think this unique unit line can be useful in campaigns and scenarios already existing. Every time than Sicilians were used of course but also replacing the knight line in the Hastings (1066) scenario and the knight of the Stephen scenario who already use the Robert Guiscard skin.

A heavy lancer, the skin of Robert Guiscard is cool in visual.
But I don’t feel the need. Is the skin of European knight poorly accurate or something? Like, if people said introduce the mounted samurai and replace the knight with it for Japanese, I might not agree but I could understand.
As for the second UU for the Sicilians, personally I’m looking forward a replacement for the militia line since the serjeant completely take the role away, or a new UU at the castle once the serjeant itself directly replace the militia line.

You actually made me think about it as a way to bring back the 50% reduced bonus damage but honestly your idea is ridiculously overpowered.
These knights would be the best on melee and arguably best on range too

Not really, and probably no more so for Sicilians/Normans than anyone else. Robert Guiscard is a pretty accurate depiction of a Norman knight, but it’s fine for a hero graphic to be more culturally specific than a generic unit.
If the devs add any unique or regional knight replacement or new heavy cavalry units, I’d prefer them to prioritise non-European civs.

To me the generic knight seems to be based exactly on a 11th century Norman knight. The shape of the shield makes it particularly obvious.

More broadly a frankish knight of that era indeed : chainmail + kite shield.
As for using a lance by giving it +1 range the question would be why the regular knight line doesn’t use it, despite it being the primary weapon for knights while the sword was just a backup.

Knights with their kite shield already look very similar to the Norman cavalry you are proposing.
As others said, it is not required.

At first yes but you could split european styles in several styles, and even making coat of arms and shields change even if the equipment remains similar.
Don’t want the game to become non-friendly to scenario editor with specific coat of arms.
It would be subtle and still within the player colour, for example the teutonic paladin would have an eagle on his shield instead of fleurs de lys.
But just like you can pick another civ’s architectural style, picking another’s unit style could be done
Norman knight are light cavalery remplace Hussard
By the standard of the day they were heavy cav. A long hauberk was the best available for the rider and armouring horses wasn’t done in the West yet (it would mainly develop during the HYW against the threat of longbows)
Which is exactly how the knight is portrayed.
Yes over the next 5 centuries there would be an inflation in armour.
