One of the current castles will be replaced

Hello,

As was anounced, 25 existing civs will get a new castle, and we expect 1 civ in each architecture group to retain the existing one while others sharing it will get a new design. But that only leaves 24 civs in that situation.

The 25th will then utterly replace an existing castle, whose model will be gone. Maybe still available as a new unique building in the scenario editor, as was the case for some old wonders.

Which one will it be ?

I think the old AOK castles are at risk. They are very blocky compared to newer ones (West Europe, Middle East and East Asia) thus one could have an overhaul despite looking iconic. The Central European one, despite looking more complex, also has the disadvantage of being actually english so it would be a strange choice to be retained by the Teutons - and Germany is exceptionally rich in castles so there is plenty of choice.

What do you think ?

Did we count correctly? I counted 35 civs on DE release with 10 architecture sets -

  1. W. Europe
  2. C. Europe
  3. E. Europe
  4. Mediterranean
  5. Middle East
  6. Africa
  7. America
  8. East Asia
  9. SEA
  10. C. Asia.

35-10 = 25. So we are getting 25 new castles.

Indians are now unique (11th style), don’t remember to which the old was given but the 3 others got a new unique design

W Europe - English
C Europe - All New (The old one is english)
E Europe - Slavs
Mediterranean - Italy
Middle East - Saracens or Berbers?
Africa - Berbers or Malians?
America - Mayans
East Asia - Japanese
SE Asia - Khmer
C Asia -Tatars
Indians - No new one needed

Edited. We still have 10 existing Castles. Let’s count who might get existing castles.

  1. Aztecs = America
  2. Britons = W. Europe
  3. Saracens = Middle East
  4. Japanese = East Asia
  5. Teutons = C. Europe
  6. Italians = Mediterranean
  7. Slavs = E. Europe
  8. Berbers = Africa
  9. Khmer = SEA
  10. Tatars = C. Asia.

That leaves us with

  1. Mayans
  2. Incas
  3. Celts
  4. Franks
  5. Turks
  6. Persians
  7. Chinese
  8. Koreans
  9. Mongols
  10. Vietnamese
  11. Huns
  12. Goths
  13. Vikings
  14. Portuguese
  15. Byzantines
  16. Spanish
  17. Magyars
  18. Bulgarians
  19. Lithuanians
  20. Ethiopians
  21. Malians
  22. Burmese
  23. Malay
  24. Cumans
  25. What did I forget?

Okay. So you’re right. My bet is on Saracens. That Castle is based on a Castle in Naples, Italy. Absolutely no connection with Middle East.

Maybe we forget the chronicles civs?
Both Greek civs have currently the same castle.

I sure hope so. But I wonder if they would have counted that.

That would be nice.

I really wish we could get all wonders and castles in the editor as unique buildings. It could technically be 1 buildings that can just switch between all the skins like houses having 3 different sprites.
This way we can combine different wonders and castles in one scenario while just using one civilisation.

Yes that one is definitely going on top of the chopping list.

It’s more likely that they replace the central european, because it is an ENGLISH Castle for the Germanic civs. The muslims occupied southern Italy for some time, so one of them could take it.

If the teutons don’t get Marienburg, the literal headquater of the Teutonic Order I will be disappointed.

We’ll reach 50 civs with that DLC. I don’t want to have to right click 49 times to get the one I want, and I don’t even mention the risk of overshooting.

Best separate them or put them in small groups.

I expect some castle from the HRE. The Teutonic Order is merely an offshoot of the ingame Teutons.

But it would be a great choice.

I don’t think it would be that annoying since you will likely not place many wonders in one scenario, right?
If you want to place down a lot of castles it would become more annoying.

If they would find a nice way to organise the unit/building lists that would be nice. Like not having to scroll past all the bridge pieces every time or all the “Elite” units.

AoMR allows to filter by civ but that wouldn’t be too helpful in AoE2 since most units and buildings are generic.

Some text searchbar would be the solution.

Something AoMR and AoE3DE also have.
Would certainly be very nice. Also for triggers when you want to find a unit/building.

But a set of filters would be nice anyway. Like turning on of Chronicles units since most of them aren’t that useful for a Medieval scenario.

Yeah some HRE castle will probably be it, I even have a few examples in mind,
Burg Hohenzollern is later in time but its the family ancestal seat of the Hohenzollern who claim the german thrown up to this point as they where kings of prussia.
Kaiserburg in Nürnberg is one of the only “Kaiserburgen” still standing, its associated with the Staufer Familie, Friedrich Barbarossa is from this lineage.
Burg Eltz is a really nice looking Castle.

But I’m sure devs have their own favorite German Castles in mind.

But still, having the teutonic knights train in a Marienburg Castle would just be perfect!

Would be great if we get RBW events castle for Teutons and Spanish.

According to the wiki Saracen is a mix of castles of Naples and Cairo, while the Central European is clearly English.

I’m really curious how they’ll design the Huns, Goths, Mayan and Cuman castle. Assuming they are not getting the generic ones.

Maybe the Huns get one that looks like a captured Roman castle.
The Huns and the Goths generally have the wrong architecture anyway.

Maybe we are lucky and they actually add the Nomadic Architecture set so we don’t get like 4 new East Asian Architecture civs.

Maybe The Huns and Goths should be moved into Mediterranean, so they look more roman/old and not so medieval. The Huns always Bothered me with that german medieval architecture.
