Poll: Are you in favor of auto queue villagers on PC? (Toggle - can turn on / off)

Please yes!!!

AoM Retold will have a modern version of it which can come into AoE4 too!

Not really sure if I’m in favour or not.
It does - in a relatively tiny way - take away one of the skills in the game. And I think there’s a danger that once you start cutting, you keep going until there’s nothing much left.
While I think people are kidding themselves that this isn’t an issue from Plat and up (I’m in Diamond and still regularly miss villagers, usually around the 15-20 minute mark if tunnel visioning on a hopefully game-deciding fight) cycling through your TC(s) every 15-30 seconds and making a villager or two isn’t that difficult.

Really its a buff for people who don’t use hot keys at all.

Seeing as all the skill required at the moment is just TC Hotkey and Q I don’t see an issue with adding autobuild.

Auto queue in quick games with the possibility of deactivating it, I think it is ideal

Absolutely yes, this and other simplifications can guarantee more focus on player interaction rather than ā€œplaying Sim Cityā€ alone. This is not only for casual players but also for high-ranking ones.

I am a low rank, but winning a game only because my opponent forgot to produce villagers is not fun, and losing a game because I forgot to produce villagers is not fun either.

I would like to see some changes of this type in the future, for a gameplay focused on player interaction rather than APM or a multi-singleplayer game.

I understand but these suggestions are only for quick games

I’m going to share my opinion.

I disagree for many reasons:

1 - It’s an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game, and automating processes takes away the focus from the quick decision-making that a player must have.

Not to mention that generating villagers automatically won’t help bring in new players since beginners will face others at the same level. I see this action more as a way for people who want an easier path to a high level rather than for those who are just starting.

2 - It will greatly increase the early aggression advantage, heavily penalizing players who are under pressure, whether they are trying to follow a more economic path or those civilizations with a weaker feudal age.

The player who is attacking early and disturbing the other player won’t even need to worry about their villagers since they generate automatically. This will make the game a snowball without any room for error.

If a player is focusing on attacking, they need to be good at keeping their base productive too. Otherwise, the advantage will always be with those who are pressuring rather than those who have to defend for any reason.

PS: I’m a player who likes to be aggressive, but aggression must have its penalties.

3 - I’m in favor of new mechanics, but not removal.

This would be a drastic change in gameplay that could bring dissatisfaction to many players. Adding new features is welcome, and many players will appreciate having something extra to follow or do. However, removing a mechanic will bring dissatisfaction to those who have already gotten used to it. In these cases, I believe it’s better to create a new game for those who want it rather than ruining what already exists for other players.

4 - Penalizing the few advantages of playing with a controller.

I understand having it on the console for those who play with a controller because it’s not as easy as playing with a keyboard and mouse, and it facilitates interaction between the two platforms. Adding it to the keyboard and mouse will widen the gap between the two platforms even more.

I’m not saying that those who play with a controller can’t be as good as those who play with a keyboard and mouse, but it is much harder to play with a controller compared to playing with a keyboard and mouse.

PS: What I think could be added is some type of official mod to create quick matches with such functionality, but never in normal or ranked games.

He’s not even paying attention to the thread, that mod already exists

secondly, before they even opposed producing 5 villagers with the shift!!

There were also opponents of weakening the tower rush, but in the end they did do it

The argument here is therefore . . . what? Should we remove all automation from the game?

I’ve seen critics accuse people of wanting everything in the game to be automated, which is similarly flawed.

The core fact is that automation exists in the game, and will continue to exist in the game. The discussion around this is ā€œhow muchā€, not ā€œautomating is badā€, because automation exists, and therefore cannot be bad (or at least, bad enough, because the game’s done fine with it so far).

I believe you can already attached a mouse and keyboard to your XBox controller, but as I go the other way (PC with mouse+kb, and an XBox controller I use for various games on the PC), I wouldn’t know 100%.

People in here writing entire manuscripts on why they think auto queuing villagers will lead to the downfall of civilization. Such a bizarre hill to die on but it is very indicative of this forum to be honest.

Is it? As I’ve stated many times before, when this came to AoM, it seriously hurt the game. In hindsight, I wish they never had added autoqueue as it effectively killed my will to play the game.

I do NOT want to see this happening to AoE4 as well.

If anything, Autoqueue is a hill people are willing to die on defending–because we have already seen its negative impact on RTS games. Yet, people are willing to entirely ignore perfect 1:1 examples because they think it’ll somehow be different in AoE4.

Yes, it is. You’re making this about subjectivity being objective, ā€˜I did not enjoy it and felt less like playing it; ergo we all did’. Then you’re creating conflict by flipping it back on other people by saying you aren’t attacking the idea, others are just defending it. Autoqueue is the basis for many rtses, they are doing fine.

Let the discussion stand on merit, we all have our own half baked ideas.

There is a distinct difference between discussion and bickering. This forum is mostly the latter in my experience. Right vs wrong is just silly.

First they should be framed in that it is being suggested to do it only in quick games and with the possibility of deactivating it, then you should be able to give a convincing argument that is not because of your old habits or preferences

Why should it matter how the player is playing the game? (it’s not breaking any rules)

Usually, controller players are getting stomped and use mouse & keyboard on Xbox/Microsoft.

I can understand that people who play AOM might not see it as a big deal, but AOM has other things to focus on, other than vill production. The thing is, macro is a big deal on AOE2. I may hate the system, but it’s what helps it maintain the title of ā€œone of the most difficult rts gamesā€.

A good idea of course.

It just can’t be added in ranked and would need options to enable and disable.

But the biggest problem, in my opinion, is that if it’s added to the game, a cheater might try to enable it even if it shouldn’t be possible, just like they disable the game’s fog of war, and this would be a huge problem.

If such a feature is decided to be implemented, it must be developed in the best possible way to prevent abuse and never in ranked matches or normal games (normal games are also for those who want to play as close to a regular match as possible but without committing to the ranking). It should only be for custom games.
