[poll] Cosmetic DLC

It will be hard to justify payed DLCs now that they are adding a lot of unique skins to all European civilisations in AoE3 for free.
All Royal Guard (stronger generic units) now get unique skins in the upcoming patch on top of some other units.
That would be equivalent of giving all units affected by unique technologies or civilisation bonuses a unique skin.

I would only pay for dlcs if they are expansions, the skins could be added for free within these expansionsā€¦

Yea me as well.

Canā€™t really justify paying for only skins.

I personally think it depends on how much they would add at once.
If they make unique regional unit skins for all regions (5-7 different regions) replacing all or almost all generic units in one DLC I think it would be fair to let people pay for that.
If itā€™s just one region itā€™s not really that much.

Iā€™d personally still buy it but Iā€™m very interested in having more accurate skins and 5$/ā‚¬ is not that much money for me. But I can see why many people donā€™t like that.

I mean years is a bit of an exaggeration and every developer donā€™t need to work on the engine related issues.

There is a reason why there are several different roles in programming: game programmers, technical artists, engine programmers, AI programmers etc etc.

Depending on the size of the teams and all that. With effective onboarding processes you can get settled in faster than one would expect. Speaking from experience.

It depends on what proficiency level you need your developers to have.
Someone who only worked on the engine for one year will be worse then someone who worked on it for 10 years.

Might be, but as said, not everyone would work directly on the engine either way, and newer devs might work on smaller pieces under supervision or guide from a more experienced developer.

Transfering knowledge and ideas, as well as writing code with a superior helping out. All of these help getting peeps up to speed. More experienced developers supervising less experienced.

The code should also be properly documented and readable for any new programmer coming in.

Also not all job postings will be junior level developers. Some devs might just need a month or two to get into everything.

But the problem is that there might not be a clear fix and sometimes fixes generate unwanted behaviours, that arent necessarily bugs. People dont realise that sometimes what a player think is a bug, is the programmer thinking that something should work in a specific way and the code is correctly written. The result is just not what the players and/or developers wanted.

But all of yours and my points depend on the organisational skills and mindsets behind the games.

I donā€™t understand people who donā€™t like the idea of ā€‹ā€‹a cosmetic DLC. After all, it may be that unique unit models would be visible only to the owner of such a DLC - or possibly to everyone (then there would be an option in the settings that enables or disables the cosmetic content from the DLC).

In addition, there is always some possibility of additional support for developers between the release of standard DLCs.

why does this sound like stockholm syndrome to me, ig not without a reason

Reviving this thread now because I think itā€™s relevant again.

The developers were saying that they want to try out new things this year and that it will be full of ā€œChristmas presentsā€.

I wouldnā€™t be surprised if that included a Cosmetic DLC or even free patch.

AoE 3 received a lot of cosmetic unique things new for old civs for free.

All Iā€™m asking for are regional unit models like Trade Cart (5-6 models per regions).

Iā€™m suddendly getting visions from the future:

They announce a cosmetic DLC, most people expect it to be regional or individual unit skins and new architecture sets. After all, thatā€™s what most of the community is asking for, right? Makes perfect sense.

Then we get the reveal: itā€™s not a historical skins DLC, but rather a joke skins one.

Even worseā€¦ Most of the skins theyā€™re selling are old assets from previous events. People complain, except on Reddit where the fanboys will purposefully misunderstand criticism towards the DLC and call you stupid if you donā€™t like it.

$13 price, 25% positive reviews on steam, devs remain completely silent.

Only one dev comes to clarify that the poster isnā€™t AI art and another dev clarifies that the event mod versions wouldnā€™t be taken down.

Not to carry water for the devsā€¦but thinking about it from their point of view, I can imagine theyā€™re waiting to see if the blowback eases up. To see if after all the ā€œbutt hurtā€ fans have got it out of their system if the ā€œregular fanā€ response is more positive.

With over twice as many reviews as TMR, and actually dipping slightly down to 30%, I donā€™t see V&V reviews making any substantial comeback. But the devs may be operating on hopium.

Only if the fans have enough copium.

Iā€™m not saying itā€™s for each individual Civ, but Iā€™d like to see different Unit Skins created for each architectural style group. If we could accomplish that, the level of design in the game would be much higher, at least on the outside.

The legionaire should have been like the Sergeant.

Visibility should focus on keeping similar colour patterns, while the overall shape of the unit and animations would do the rest. A pikeman carries a big pointy stick by definition, after all. So how much is armoured, how much is some cloth (player colour or another), the horse colour or how much armour it packsā€¦ should remain close between all civs.

Yes, I expect something like thatā€¦

I believe the quote actually goes something like this. Please note the highlighted sentence here:

"Weā€™ve got some big surprises still waiting for you along these lines and theyā€™ll take their own form as we continue to work on entertaining you in new ways, so to the extent that you enjoy and support *Victors and Vanquished*, we fully intend to keep Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition like a year-long Christmas tree with the presents piled high (without getting clothes from Grandma ā€“ cool toys only). Note: this doesnā€™t at all mean that the DLC you love is going away, but it definitely means weā€™re trying new things in an effort to make you even more happy."

Unless sales figures are good, then considering the widespread V&V backlash in the community, it seems there may be no year-long AoE2 Christmas treeā€¦ and nary a present to be found

Devs reply to bug or issue threads sometimes, so theyā€™re at not completely silent. But maybe regarding V&V, sure.

I mean, there arenā€™t a ton of things they could say that could change peoplesā€™ minds about V&V or make them feel better. And most anything they say would be met with even more/continued harsh criticism, unless they say, ā€œITā€™S FREE!! ENJOY!!ā€ or ā€œ85% OFF, ENJOY!!ā€ ā€“ which likely isnā€™t going to happen. (At least not until Steam Winter sale or something.) So I bet theyā€™re not exactly jumping for joy at the thought of saying something, and may just wait until the next DLC or content announcement, whenever or whatever year that comes now.

PS: Iā€™m pretty sure FloosWorld is a moderator(?), not a dev. His tagline says, Dev Agent NĀ°1 which I take to mean he is an agent for the devs (i.e., a moderator) ā€“ not an actual dev. I used to think he was a dev, but I realized he probably isnā€™t based on how they post, and I think devs get a different tagline.

FloosWorld pointing to a reddit post by the husband of the artist was great. And then the husband actually posting in the thread itself was cool, tooā€¦
