Definitely the Canaan religion of Ugarit. Very fascinating stories that modern religions and cultures took inspiration from. The old testament copied many things from there such as Leviathan and the evil eye.
For now i hope they just stick to the 5 civis present in the game already, improving and balancing them.
But in Future expansions i see no reason why they would not to.
But i must be sincere, from all the civis in the list i think the most exotic and in contrast with the game would be the hindu. It fits perfectly in the game. Major Gods: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the mantainer, and Shiva the Destroyer.
If i would pick one, i would either pick the Hindu or the Sumerians.
As for inca and mayans. Canât see How they would fit in the game, because This is aom not aoe 2. In aoe2 you would have Knights and armies using plate armor and chain mail, but we know mayans and aztecs didnât use them. So what would be their units? Their armor improvements, etcâŠ
Take a look at the Return of the Gods mod. It features the Aztec civ and they perfectly fit in the game. The team also plans to add the Mayan and Incan civs.
If you think they are too anachronistic, donât forget the Norse already are a medieval civ, yet everyone likes them.
Wow they really put work on It, It looks great⊠Although itâs Just me or they felt a bit too complex?
They look better than the chinese though
.
As for the Norse, never thought about tem this way.
I donât think I follow your logic?
Like yeah this isnât Age of Empires 2. You donât have to worry about sharing the same military roster than every other civ in the game. No knights and armies using plate armor and chain mail. Each civ just has a completely different unit roster and particularly myth units. You can even give them myth units that compensate for the lack of cavalry if it comes down to it.
This is an extreme non-issue. They just get their own, locally themed armor improvements and whatnot.
Yes, i got It now.
I just thought they hadnât much to explore in question of armor and weapons improvement.
Of course, itâs only a matter of time⊠they will launch Retold and from there they will begin to balance it and introduce new mythologiesâŠ
Maybe they are like their AoE 3 counterparts but with mythological units tooâŠ

- At least one native american (Aztecs are cool but maybe way too late for the gameâs time period, so I think Mayans are better)
- Persians
- Japanese/Yamatai
- Huns/turks ########## (I know next to nothing about it, but it would be fun if possible)
The length of time here is indifferentâŠthis is about mythology from any eraâŠyou have the Greeks and Egyptians from ancient times and the Norse from the Viking era, then the Chinese are from the Ming eraâŠ(the Atlanteans are a mix between the Romans and the Mesocivs)âŠ
I did make the Lakota for the Divine Edition mod, so theyâve got a basis to work with if they want to.
Personally, I think the gameplay we made for the Lakota over in that mod is a completely new and unexplored style that would suit Retold very well.
why was the name of their religion censored
I must admit I donât know much about the in-game Chinese either, but is there a source on them being from the Ming era? The wiki says theyâre pre-Song (which I think itâs about right as the end of the gameâs time frame, even if the characters are centuries apart).
Most probably a few of the letters in this word would form a censored word on their own.
Yes, I just looked and it is not one thing or the otherâŠthe Chinese of AoM go from the Shang Dynasty (like AoE 1) to the Han dynastyâŠthe Sitting Tiger unit (traction trebuchet) is from the end of the Song dynasty and Beijing, one of the AIs is from the beginning of the Ming dynasty (1403) made capital in 1420, but it had already existed since 1045 BCâŠ
- The Chinese in Age of Mythology are based on periods and dynasties in Chinese history, rather than mythical pre-history:
- The Halberdier and War Chariot reminisce of the late Shang, Zhou, Qin and early Han armies;
- Chu Ko Nu shooters were deployed since the Warring States period, though very limited, until Republican era.
- The Sitting Tiger represents traction trebuchets, used by Chinese armies since at least Warring States up to late Song period; named after the Song-period traction trebuchet Crouching Tiger Trebuchet (èèčČç Č hĂș dĆ«n pĂ o).
- The Mounted Archer, represented the adoption of lightly armored cavalry archers from Xiongnu and Hu people (èĄæéšć° hĂșfĂșqĂshĂš âHu clothings; mounted shootingâ), first by Zhao state.
- One may presume Scout Cavalry were the Mounted Archersâ logical melee counterparts.
- Cataphracts represented the adoption of the use of heavily-armored cavalry from Xianbei peoples.
Looks like itâs mostly Classical/Early Medieval era with a bit of late medieval thrown in, which sounds about right.
Sure, originally in the TotD alpha, the Chinese were the ones from AoE 3 (Ming-Qinq), but it didnât look good, so they were more influenced by the Chinese from AoE 1 and AoE 2âŠ
Sad to see Slavic mythology so low on the list, it was the first one I voted on in the poll lol. Thereâs a lot to work with there and iâd love to see it in the game!
Aztecs are fine because the Norse are already in the game. The Norse are ârelatively newâ compared to the Greeks and the Egyptians.
Plus, the Aztecs Empire was comprised of Tenochtitlan, Tetzcoco, and Tlacopan. You can even trace these three alliances further back to the Olmecs, Toltecs, etc⊠days.
The Aztecs need to be in the game. It is by FAR the most popular choice among the AoM fans.
And yes to Persian and Japanese!
ExactlyâŠremember that here the historical periods do not matter too muchâŠyou can put any mythology between 3000 BC and 1500 ADâŠ(because after 1500 Christianity spread throughout the world and the other religions remained a little in the background)âŠobviously the game can only have polytheistic religions and mythologies (because you need many minor gods with which to advance in age)âŠ
I would go as far as 1600AD because Iâm pretty sure if we ever get the Japanese, the civ will be based on the Sengoku period. That being said, civs arenât even fully representative of a specific period of time. The Greeks have units from the Classical and Hellenistic periods, for instance.
