Preview: Age of Kings Datamod (WIP)

As AoE 2 turns 25 this year, I wanted to make something to celebrate it. Hence I’m presenting the Age of Kings Datamod!

The mod aims to emulate the game as it was prior to The Conquerors. This means:

  • Only the 13 original civs are playable
  • Unique Technologies are removed
  • Unit/Tech costs, train times and values are adjusted (this means Bombard Towers will do melee damage!)
  • Town Centers only cost wood and Teutons will get their infamous Death Stars
  • Hand Cannoner, Bombard Cannon and Cannon Galleon require an additional technology after Chemistry has been researched
  • The tech tree wording is adjusted to fit with AoK

Are the bonuses localized to other languages?

It’s currently English only.

What would you need for it to be localized in other languages? I have an old AoK copy so I could give you the Spanish strings if you want

Also, what about the campaigns? Oh, oh! Do Byzantines get their OG Middle East build set or the new Mediterranean set? I hope it’s the latter

Byzantines have middle eastern architecture again. We haven’t made many string changes and most of them are changed numbers. It is very easy to make a custom localisation in DE, I can show you how to do it. The amount of string changes are quite few so I imagine you could use the existing localisation with only minor changes.

I know how to do a custom localization in DE.

If I have the original 1.0a AoK files, there shouldn’t be any changes, right? That’s the version you are working with? Or 1.0?

Edit: just PM me the lines to translate. I suppose it’s just the civ bonuses.

I strongly suspect it won’t work to just plug the AoK file into DE but we can try it for fun ^^

You can send me the AoK string file and I’ll try and see if it works

Yes the only thing we’ve edited in strings is civilisation bonuses more or less, I can DM you
