- Sicilians- Heavy cavalry (Norman Knights)
- Moors- good archers and Camel Gunners!
- Chichimec/Tarascans- light infantry/skirmishers
Arenāt Sicilians are under Italians, and arenāt Moors the Berbers?
The Sicilians are distinct enough from the more Lombard-style of current Italians with their Muslim and Norman influence. They were their own separate kingdom until the mid nineteenth century after all, with a fierce rivalry with the Barbary states in Libya and Tunis and close ties to Aragon at times.
The Moors were less nomadic then Berbers, being the combination of Muslim and Spanish. Far less Camel oriented, with a specific focus on heavier cavalry and infantry than most other Muslim powers. christian mercenaries were very frequently used by the Moors as elite bodyguards and shock troops. Also one of the only powers to use camel gunners, which would be awesome to see.
Great to hear that its kind of possible and that people actually think its a cool idea
Yes! I like all those civ suggestions.
Well I disagree, I mean you donāt have to feel like you have to play the new civs. You can just ignore them. Having them there just makes the game feel complete and also means those who want to play the new civs will have that option. This game is timeless, and it definitely has room to grow even more. It can become the definitive Medieval RTS game of all time with ALL the major empires from every continent. It also just feels slightly odd and tokenistic that for example Africa and South America have only a couple of civs but Europe has so many. I think they have definitely gone a long way to broaden the scope of the Asian civilisations with the addition of the new definitive edition civs and the south east Asian ones and India and I feel they should do the rest of the world justice as well. I donāt think that every single civilisation in the world should exist for the sake of diversity or whatever I just think the ones that were militarily on par at least and were in their own right an āempireā of some sort should be added in. For example I know a lot of people have over the years demanded a Polynesian empire but I donāt think this would fit AOE2, the other civs people have suggested here though I feel should fit.
I like the addition of Moors, but I feel Sicily wasnāt really powerful enough to be considered an āempireā. I think only those powers that were truly an āempireā should be in age of empires because it is after all a game about empires. Otherwise we would have include every single city state in the world in the Medieval period.
As powerful as the Portuguese before the 1500s. Otherwise, Normans itself would be good seeing as they were a very influential group that took over both Sicily and England, distinguishing themselves as a power separate from France, certainly more fitting than Burgundy.
I just want proper Norman Knights.
I think Normans would actually make more sense and would be a good addition.
The ātermā Moors was a Medieval name for the Berbers of Maghreb that later expanded to include all Muslims in the North of Africa and the Middle East.
thatās a good point actually. Its like the term āSaracensā, its a bit too generic to actually mean anything.
Itās like the Slavs. Itās an umbrella civilization.
Yea umbrella civs just arent interesting. Saracens in the Middle Ages was basically just Crusader slang for Muslims. It would be the same as taking the Franks, Spanish, Portuguese and Italians and just lumping them all into one civ and calling them āThe Catholicsā. Itās a bit lazy and I think just a reflection of the times the game was made in.
Thatās why we got Berbers which were sorely needed.
I wouldnāt mind though to see the Moors as specific European Arab amalgam in Spain.
By the way, Moorish architecture looks really great:
They could introduce a Norman knight lancer heavy cavalry which allies of Italians could recruit as mercenaries like the Kipchaks/Genitours.
re: Bohemians
Those monks make OG Cuman Steppe Lancers look like an extremely reasonable and well-balanced unit. Theyād be unbeatable in Arena. Theyād beā¦ unbeatable everywhere. They probably could win on Islands with a single dock.
Their wagon fortā¦looks complicated.
Yea I didnāt give too much thought to the balancing just more about the thematic concepts. I guess someone who is better at game design than me can work out the details.
Once DE supports allowing mods to add new civs (confirmed its in the pipeline), Iāll be moving my mod https://sites.google.com/view/aoe2-civ-concepts-llc/ over to DE which has some overlap with many of the ideas in this thread.
Looks interesting, do you think this can be combined with unique architecture and skins for every civ?
Iāll definitely be aiming to have appropriate regional architecture for each civ (unlike the HD version of the LLC mod). Unique graphics for the various unique units is also a possibility, although I am no good with making graphics so would need to borrow from elsewhere. Having a unique skin for every civ for every unit is something I am not interested in doing.
