Should more Western civs get the Ottoman treatment and get unique rosters?

All Euros used Arquebusiers extensively and in an ideal world they’d all get them as an early gunpowder light infantry, however this had been skipped over along with Chinese having as ‘their’ unit, which is fine (though I’m sure we could give it a more appropriate name and to be honest, unless a complete upgrade of Crossbowmen (as ‘archaic’ ranged light infantry), there’s no real role for them I guess.

I do get the need for a little more attention paid to the Portuguese though.

Im gonna actually because in that battle actually was supporting a Morrocan pretender to the throne, ally of Portugal, and was less actual crusader Larping than you think.

Gameplan is early mid game archaic civ.

And Portuguese knights were under kings orders and not private enterprises of conquest and plunder.

Yes, indeed. Like i said current portugal is not what Portugal was all about. Full rework is needed.

Ordenancas were not a unit, but a model of regional organization for the army recruitment.

I gave you a few names already:
Besteiros do Conto
Arquebusieiros do Conto
Knights of Christ
Nau
Guarda Real dos Alabardeiros
Acobertados (Heavy Cav in plate armour)

Its not obscure references, i can provide you links and suggestion for books that cover the Portuguese Empire from trade to warfare.

To start with Conquerors from Roger Crowley is a fantastic book for introduction of Portuguese history.
AR disney has 2 volumes that cover the Portuguese Empire.
And Saturnino Monteiro has like 5 volumes of Portuguese Sea battles, worth a read.
Gonçalo Feio has a PDF (free) about the Military Revolution and its effects in Portugal.

Funny to see some EUROPEAN (not intentionally emphasizing this. It’s a pure accident) unit ideas criticized as “bringing nothing new to gameplay” when 80% of the TWC/TAD units have been slightly tweaked versions of the same few units since 2007.

The AOE2 subforum is a better place for your disgust-every-European-civ-poster crusade. Sincere suggestion.

  • All AOE2 civs have only a smaller number of unique features so it’s not that the European civs are really underrepresented. While in AOE3 new civs are usually much richer, and their addition is based on regions, so most European civs are more poorly represented compared to the new non-European ones.
  • That game really has too many European civs to the degree that they already started adding small duchies overlapping with existing ones.
  • It is based on a period where Europeans were really not more important or advanced than anywhere else.
  • To make you even happier, there are really a lot of people there who believe medieval Europeans are more important than anywhere else.

It would be a waste of everyone’s time and mentality if you spend your talents on this small battleground where most people just post for fun.

Mate I don’t need your childish behaviour. If you want to have a serious talk, ill have it, if you want to behave like this, I’m not interested.

I’m sorry to tell you this, the sarcasm was warranted. He only pointed out that your suggestions were not going to be good for gameplay or meaningful. You turned it into a personal attack about history knowledge or whatever bs and not about how to justify age 3 pikes.

Nah its just childish. I corrected his lack of knowledge about a topic. I agreed that its just a rough suggestion, that to be fair would need a rework of the civ.

Him, and you by sympathy are unable to actually read what is being said and are behaving poorly and trying to justify it behind “reasons”

more personal attacks? wow you have a clear style

ports needs a rework, i have agreed with that sentiment for years, being an ### doesnt get you any points

Full unique architectures would be unrealistic, but I think some “major” buildings like TC and capitol should be given civ variants like the church, based on some well-known real buildings, instead of generic American colonial ones.

Cossacks has some really good designs:

Reminds me a bit of the naming convention used for Native Americans units in AMERICA. They weren’t any one people but an umbrella civ used for various plains peoples, so their units had generic names like Arrow Shooter and Rifle Shooter.

This is a game where the US trained Cowboys and Sheriffs as basic units, so it’s not exactly the pinnacle of historicity.

That happens with frightening frequency in video games tbh. Like Civilization IV had a civ which was literally just “Native Americans”.

… You can literally make this same argument for over a 1/4 of the roster in the game: Spanish Lancer, French Cuirassier, Ranger, Pavisier, Ruyter, Humbaraci, etc.
On the subject of Royal Guards, there are names that are equally as bad, if not worse, already in the game:
King’s Life Guard Hussar;
Czapka Uhlan (literally named after a cap);
Espadachin Rodelero (literally “Swordsman”);
Dalkarl Pikeman (an inhabitant from Dalarna based on a single rebellion);
Stadswacht Halberdier (literally “City Guard”);
Carabineer Ruyter.
So why are Ports always singled out in this discussion?

What makes Romanian nobility so particularly special that they require their own unit?

I even dropped a small text referencing “Aventureiros”.
Anyway its not a productive discussion as we could witness.

Trust me. If you wrote a post asking for a unique Romanian native unit before KotM, he’d be equally pissed.

So it’s not really double standard.

Fair enough. I’m a bit tired of this discussion anyway.
